Neither mouse and keyboard nor controller is best for every FPS player. A mouse gives you a broad physical aiming surface and direct control that can suit precise, fast target acquisition. A controller offers analog movement and camera control, and may be more comfortable for couch play. The right choice depends on the game’s input and matchmaking rules, your comfort, and which device you know well.

How mouse and controller aiming differ

Mouse and keyboard: direct aim and broad movement

A mouse lets you move your aim across a physical surface rather than steering it with a thumbstick. That range of motion can make precise adjustments and quick reactions feel more direct. A usable desk or other stable surface is part of the trade-off, and the keyboard’s movement inputs are generally binary rather than graded.

Controller: analog movement and camera control

Controller sticks provide graded movement: you can vary how far or quickly you move by changing stick input. They also let you control the camera continuously with a thumb. A controller can be a more comfortable or convenient fit for playing from a couch, but stick aiming has a shorter physical range than moving a mouse across a surface.

These are different control schemes, not a guarantee that one device will make every player more accurate. Game-specific aim assistance can also change how aiming feels.

What the evidence says—and what it cannot settle

A 2008 target-acquisition study by Kelsi M. Lenz, Alex Chaparro, and Barbara S. Chaparro compared a mouse, PlayStation 2 controller, and joystick in Star Wars Battlefront II. In its first study, overall performance did not differ significantly by device, although participants took fewer shots with a joystick in the sniper-rifle condition. In a second task, involving participants expert with their device and joystick users who had been trained, there was no significant difference in time to kill; mouse users did take significantly fewer shots than joystick or controller users. The results describe particular tasks and participants in one older game, not a universal ranking for current FPS games. Read the study.

A 2011 study by K. Gerling, M. Klauser, and J. Niesenhaus involved 45 participants playing PC and PlayStation 3 versions of Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Players who switched to an unfamiliar platform reported more usability problems and felt more challenged than players using their comfort platform, while their overall experience was equally positive. This supports taking familiarity seriously; it does not show that either device is inherently easier for everyone. Read the study summary.

Why the game’s rules and aim assistance matter

Support for mouse and keyboard, controller matchmaking, and platform restrictions vary by game. Aim assistance is also game-specific: it is a balancing feature in some contexts, not proof that controllers have an advantage across all shooters.

For example, Blizzard’s Overwatch 2 developers describe console aim assist as a way to help bridge the precision difference between mouse and controller. That is Blizzard’s explanation of its own game, not an independent measurement or a rule for other FPS titles. Read Blizzard’s statement.

Choose based on your game, comfort, and experience

  • Consider mouse and keyboard if direct mouse movement feels natural to you, you want a broad aiming surface, and your setup has a suitable place to play.
  • Consider a controller if analog movement, continuous stick camera control, portability, or couch comfort matters more to you.
  • Give familiarity weight. If you already play confidently on one device, switching may initially bring usability friction rather than an automatic improvement.
  • Check the specific game. Confirm its current input support, matchmaking behavior, and platform rules; don’t assume every FPS handles mixed inputs the same way.

A practical way to compare them

  1. Start with your main FPS. Check that game’s current supported inputs and any relevant matchmaking or input restrictions.
  2. Try both devices if the game supports them. Use the same game and similar settings so you are comparing the input method rather than different conditions.
  3. Notice what matters in play. Pay attention to whether you can aim comfortably, make the movement you intend, and play without strain or awkward setup.
  4. Choose the device you can use consistently. A device change alone does not guarantee better performance; comfort and experience are part of the result.

Intel’s comparison also frames the choice around game genre and personal preference, rather than declaring one input universally better. Read Intel’s overview.
