MongoDB write concern specifies how many replica-set members must acknowledge a write, and whether those acknowledgments must follow journal persistence. w:1 asks only for the primary’s acknowledgment; w:"majority" waits for MongoDB’s calculated voting-member threshold. A stronger acknowledgment requirement can reduce the chance of rollback after ordinary primary failover, but no write concern setting is a blanket guarantee against every failure or configuration change.

What write concern guarantees—and what it does not

Write concern controls the acknowledgment threshold for a write. The w option sets the required member count or majority; j can require journal persistence on the members counted toward that threshold; and wtimeout limits how long MongoDB waits for the requested acknowledgment level. See MongoDB’s Write Concern manual.

These settings answer different questions: did the primary acknowledge the write, did enough members acknowledge it, and was it written to their journals? They do not promise that every acknowledged write survives every possible event. In particular, journal persistence on the primary alone does not prevent a replica-set rollback.

How the common w values differ

Setting What MongoDB waits for Key trade-off
w:0 No write acknowledgment is requested. The application cannot establish that the write met a replication or durability threshold. Some socket or network errors can still surface.
w:1 The primary acknowledges the write (or the standalone server, outside a replica set). It can return sooner, but if the primary fails before replication, the write may be rolled back.
Numeric w:n above 1 The primary and enough data-bearing members to reach the requested count. It specifies a count and can include non-voting data-bearing members; a member count is not the same as majority.
w:"majority" MongoDB’s calculated majority threshold for data-bearing voting members, subject to topology rules. It is generally the stronger choice for protection against ordinary primary failover, but can wait longer or fail to reach acknowledgment when required members are unavailable.

MongoDB summarizes the failover trade-off this way: “The more members that acknowledge a write, the less likely the written data could roll back if the primary fails.” That is a qualitative statement in the MongoDB Database Manual, not a quantified probability.

When to use j:true

j:true asks MongoDB to wait until the members counted for the chosen w level have written the operation to their on-disk journals. It strengthens persistence on those members, but does not replace a replication threshold: w:1, j:true still asks only the primary to acknowledge, so a later failover can still expose the write to rollback.

For majority writes, journal behavior depends on writeConcernMajorityJournalDefault. MongoDB’s v8.3 self-managed replica-set configuration reference documents a default of true: with that setting, a majority write without an explicit j waits for a majority of voting members to write to their journals. The same configuration reference warns that all voting members must use journaling when the setting is true; deployments with an in-memory voting member require it to be false. Verify the setting and storage configuration for the server version and deployment in use: Self-Managed Replica Set Configuration.

What happens when wtimeout expires

wtimeout is a limit in milliseconds on waiting to reach the requested w acknowledgment level after the primary-side operation succeeds. If the limit expires, MongoDB returns a write concern error because enough members did not acknowledge in time. The primary-side modification is not undone: replication may complete later, or the write may ultimately be rolled back depending on what happens to the replica set.

  • A write concern error is not proof that the write did not happen.
  • For w of 1 or less, wtimeout does not apply.
  • A timeout of zero is equivalent to not specifying a timeout.
  • Because the outcome can be ambiguous to the caller, retries should be designed around the application’s write semantics; use idempotent operations where appropriate.

These timeout rules are described in the Write Concern manual. Applications should distinguish an operation error from a write concern error rather than treating both as confirmation that no change occurred.

Why majority acknowledgment depends on topology

MongoDB calculates the write-concern majority using the smaller of the majority of voting members (including arbiters) and the number of data-bearing voting members. As a result, an arbiter can affect the voting majority without storing data, while availability of data-bearing voters still matters to completing a majority write. Check the live replica set’s writeMajorityCount in rs.status() rather than assuming that a simple count of all members tells you whether a write can be acknowledged. See MongoDB’s default read and write concern documentation.

Do not assume that the implicit default is always w:"majority". MongoDB documents it as the default in most deployments, with an arbiter-related exception: when there is at least one arbiter and the number of non-arbiter members is not greater than the majority of voting nodes, the implicit default is w:1. The actual replica-set configuration matters.

Version 8.0 changed when majority writes become visible on secondaries

Starting in MongoDB 8.0, a majority write can be acknowledged after a majority of data-bearing members durably write its oplog entry; those members apply the change asynchronously. In earlier releases, members applied the write before acknowledgment. Therefore, immediately after a majority acknowledgment on 8.0 or later, a read routed to a secondary may not yet see the change on that secondary. MongoDB describes this version distinction in its Write Concern documentation.

Write concern alone does not define read-your-writes behavior. Majority read concern returns data acknowledged by a majority, and MongoDB requires both majority read concern and majority write concern in a causally consistent session for causal consistency. See Read Concern “majority”. Choose read concern, session behavior, and read routing to match the visibility your application needs.

Choosing a setting for an application

  • Use w:1 when primary acknowledgment is sufficient and the application accepts the additional rollback exposure before replication.
  • Consider w:"majority" when reducing rollback risk across ordinary primary failover is more important than minimizing acknowledgment latency; validate the deployment’s majority and journaling configuration.
  • Use numeric w:n when a specific number of data-bearing acknowledgments is the requirement, and account for which members can count toward it.
  • Add j:true when the required members must have journaled the operation; do not use it as a substitute for choosing an adequate w.
  • Set wtimeout to bound waiting, not to decide whether a timed-out write succeeded. Handle write concern errors as potentially ambiguous outcomes.

MongoDB also provides setDefaultRWConcern to configure cluster defaults; inspect the effective defaults instead of inferring them from a generic rule. The command is documented at setDefaultRWConcern. For timing, defaults, and topology behavior, consult documentation matching the deployed MongoDB server version.
