You can make polished YouTube videos and mobile live streams with a phone: choose the right orientation, use soft light, get the microphone close to the speaker, and test the setup before publishing or going live. For a live stream, check YouTube eligibility first—mobile streaming has additional requirements—and rehearse with an unlisted stream.

Plan the video around where people will watch it

Choose framing before you record. For conventional high-definition footage, YouTube’s mobile-video guidance recommends holding the phone horizontally for a 16:9 image. Portrait framing can suit vertical live viewing: YouTube says vertical live streams may appear in its mobile vertical live feed. Neither format is right for every video, so decide based on the intended viewing context and keep the subject within the frame.

Choice Best fit Trade-off
Landscape, 16:9 Conventional wide video and high-definition mobile footage Less suited to a vertical mobile feed.
Portrait, 9:16 Vertical live viewing on mobile Not the standard wide-video composition; frame the subject accordingly.

If you plan a live stream in both horizontal and vertical formats through Live Control Room, YouTube says the vertical version is a center crop by default. Keep important faces, text, and action near the center so they are less likely to be cut off.

Set up the phone camera before recording

  • Use the rear camera when practical; YouTube recommends it for better resolution.
  • Silence notifications so calls and alerts do not interrupt a take. Turn on Do Not Disturb before recording or streaming.
  • If your camera app offers manual controls, set and lock focus and exposure. This can prevent the image from shifting brightness or focus during a shot.
  • Keep the lens clean and the phone steady. For a stationary solo recording, a tripod can be a convenience, not a YouTube requirement.

Improve lighting with what you have

Soft, even light usually gives a phone camera more usable detail than harsh, uneven light. Indoors, try placing the subject near a window. Outdoors, move into shade when direct sun creates hard shadows. A white card or simple reflector can bounce light back onto a shadowed side of the face. Start with these adjustments before buying lighting gear.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Make speech clear and easy to hear

  • Move the speaker closer to the phone’s built-in microphone, and do not cover the mic with a hand or case.
  • Choose a quieter location and avoid handling or moving the phone while speaking.
  • In a loud environment, consider an external microphone, after confirming it is compatible with your phone and connector.
  • In a room with strong echoes, soft furnishings can reduce reflections and make speech sound less harsh.

For live streams, test sound as well as picture. A sharp image cannot compensate for speech that viewers cannot understand.

Record and upload a video from your phone

  1. Choose the format: decide whether you need landscape 16:9 or portrait/square framing before recording.
  2. Prepare the shot: use the rear camera if suitable, silence notifications, and lock focus and exposure when those controls are available.
  3. Set the light and sound: use a window or shade, keep the speaker close to an unobstructed microphone, and reduce background noise.
  4. Record and review: check that the subject remains in frame and that speech is intelligible before making more takes.
  5. Upload: on Android, YouTube’s app upload flow can record a new video or select an existing file. YouTube says a square or vertical video of three minutes or less may be uploaded as a Short; confirm the current app behavior when publishing.

Go live from a phone: eligibility and preparation

Mobile live streaming has account and device conditions beyond simply opening the YouTube app. YouTube Help, accessed in 2026, lists at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, live streaming enabled, no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and a supported device for mobile live streaming. YouTube’s general live-stream guidance sets the minimum age at 16. First-time mobile live activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the day of an event. Check your account’s current eligibility in YouTube Help before scheduling a stream.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
  1. Check access early: confirm the channel is verified, meets the mobile subscriber requirement, has live streaming enabled, and has no recent live-stream restriction.
  2. Charge and prepare: charge the phone, enable Do Not Disturb, and consider an external battery pack for a longer session. YouTube’s mobile live tips estimate about 1% battery use per minute of streaming; this is only an approximate tip, not a device-specific guarantee.
  3. Choose orientation and lock it: decide between portrait and landscape before starting, then lock rotation to prevent an accidental change.
  4. Test the connection: check that the internet connection is stable in the place where you will stream.
  5. Choose a camera: the front camera lets you see chat; YouTube describes the rear camera as better for visuals. If you use the rear camera, a second device can display chat.
  6. Rehearse privately: run an unlisted live stream and check both audio and video. YouTube specifically recommends an unlisted test to verify how the stream will look and sound.

Choose the practical setup for your situation

Decision Start with When to change it
Camera Rear camera for visuals Use the front camera if seeing chat or framing yourself matters more; use a second device to monitor chat with the rear camera.
Light Window light, outdoor shade, or a white card Add a reflector if you need more control over bounced light.
Audio Built-in mic, close to the speaker and unobstructed Consider an external mic in a loud setting; check phone and connector compatibility.
Chat monitoring The streaming phone Use a second device when the phone’s rear camera is in use.
