There is no single pixel size for a mobile screenshot. Choose dimensions according to the destination: an iPhone or iPad App Store listing, a Google Play listing, or an image captured from an app on a particular device. Store requirements are not a chart of phones’ native screen resolutions.
First decide what kind of screenshot you need
“Mobile screenshot” can mean three different things, and their dimensions are not interchangeable:
- Store-listing artwork: an image uploaded to App Store Connect or Google Play. Follow that store’s asset rules for the target device class and orientation.
- An in-app or device capture: an image produced by a device, emulator, browser, or capture tool. Its pixel dimensions depend on the target and capture method, not on store-listing rules.
- Promotional artwork derived from a screenshot: a designed image that may include framing or text. It still needs to meet the relevant store’s format and content rules if submitted as a listing asset.
For store assets, identify the platform and supported device class first, then select portrait or landscape. For an in-app capture, record the device, operating-system or browser context, viewport, and capture method alongside the resulting dimensions.
Apple App Store screenshot sizes
Apple specifies accepted dimensions by device/display class rather than prescribing one universal iPhone or iPad size. Its current table includes these examples:

These are examples, not a complete device list. A diagonal measurement alone does not establish which file size Apple expects: consult the full Apple screenshot specification table and match your supported device grouping. The landscape dimensions reverse the portrait width and height.
How many images and which formats?
Apple allows one to 10 screenshots in JPEG, JPG, or PNG formats. The exact dimensions depend on the device class; use the official specification table before export or submission because requirements can change.
When Apple can scale screenshots
If the app’s interface is the same across device sizes and localizations, Apple says developers can provide only the highest-resolution screenshots required and those images automatically scale down to smaller device sizes. Custom images for particular sizes can be added in Media Manager. Apple says the 13-inch iPad screenshot class is required when the app runs on iPad. For iPhone apps, the 6.5-inch class is required if 6.9-inch screenshots are not provided. Check Apple’s upload instructions and current specification table for the app’s situation.

Google Play screenshot sizes
Google Play’s general image rules set bounds rather than one required phone resolution. Listing screenshots must be JPEG or 24-bit PNG without alpha, from 320 to 3840 pixels, and the long edge cannot be more than twice the short edge. Google also requires at least two screenshots across different device types to publish a listing. See the Google Play asset guidance for current requirements.
Recommendation-placement guidance
For apps seeking eligibility for recommendation formats that use screenshots, Google highly recommends at least four screenshots at a minimum 1080-pixel resolution. For portrait images, that means at least 1080 × 1920; for landscape, at least 1920 × 1080. This is a recommendation for those placements, distinct from the general minimum image bounds and the minimum count required to publish a listing.
Orientation and content
Use the app’s actual orientation. Google advises that listing screenshots show the app or game experience, be clear and correctly rotated, and not be stretched or compressed. Keep taglines limited; avoid calls to action and promotional claims. Localize additional graphic text where appropriate. Meeting the pixel bounds does not make an unclear, distorted, or misleading image a good store asset.

Store artwork is not a device-resolution chart
A store’s accepted upload dimensions describe listing assets, not the native pixel resolution of every phone or the size at which an app renders. A captured image can also be affected by display scaling, device-pixel ratio, browser viewport, emulator settings, and whether the capture includes the full page or only the visible screen. Do not infer a phone’s hardware resolution from an App Store or Play listing requirement.
If you are documenting an in-app capture, report the target device and capture method with the image’s width and height. If you are preparing a listing, follow the store-specific device grouping and asset rules instead of substituting a similar-looking resolution.
Export checklist
- Choose the destination: App Store Connect, Google Play, or an in-app/device capture.
- Choose the target: select the supported Apple device class or the relevant Play listing/device type.
- Set orientation: portrait or landscape, matching the app experience.
- Export accepted dimensions and format: use Apple’s exact table entry, or validate a Play image against its bounds, aspect ratio, and file-format rules.
- Inspect the image: confirm legibility, correct rotation, sharpness, and undistorted content; check any overlaid text for localization and store-content guidance.
- Recheck official rules before submission: Apple and Google can revise asset requirements. The figures here reflect official guidance checked September 29, 2026.
Capture screenshots programmatically
For an app screenshot captured through a browser, a developer can set a viewport, load the page, and save the rendered image. The dimensions below specify a 1080 × 1920 CSS-pixel viewport; the output’s actual pixel dimensions may differ if the capture tool applies a device scale factor. This browser example captures a web page, not a native mobile app screen or a store-ready asset by itself.

}The result is a viewport screenshot, not necessarily a full-page image. To capture the full document, use await page.screenshot({ path: 'mobile-shot.png', fullPage: true });. Full-page images can be much taller than a store listing’s accepted size, so resize or compose them only if the destination permits it. For a native application, use a device or emulator capture workflow; a browser automation viewport does not reproduce the native app environment.
Practical capture and reliability notes
- Viewport versus output pixels: CSS pixels and bitmap pixels are not always the same. A device scale factor above 1 can multiply output pixel dimensions. Verify the saved file’s dimensions rather than assuming the viewport values are the final export size.
- Wait conditions: a fixed delay can miss late-loading content, while waiting for network idle can stall on pages with persistent requests. Prefer a selector for the element that signals the needed content is ready when the page behavior allows it.
- Lazy content: full-page capture may not trigger every lazy-loaded image. Scroll the page before capture if the page needs that content rendered.
- Dynamic pages: animations, rotating content, and personalized banners can make repeated captures differ. Disable animations or provide controlled test data when consistency matters.
- Store compliance: a technically correct capture still needs a final review for the platform’s image dimensions, format, orientation, and content rules.

Troubleshooting common size and capture problems
Apple rejects an image that looks like the right phone size
Likely cause: the selected device grouping expects a different exact pixel size. A similar diagonal or aspect ratio is not enough. Compare the image against Apple’s live specification table, then export to the listed dimensions.
Google Play rejects a correctly oriented image
Check both dimensions and file encoding: each side must be within 320–3840 pixels, the long edge must not exceed twice the short edge, and the file must be JPEG or 24-bit PNG without alpha. Re-export in an accepted format and verify the image has no transparency channel.

A device scale factor can increase output bitmap pixels. Set it explicitly, as in the example, and inspect the actual file dimensions. If you need a specific store asset size, export or resize to the accepted dimensions and check that resizing has not blurred text or distorted the image.
The capture is blank or misses content
Confirm the page loaded successfully, then wait for a meaningful element rather than relying on a very short fixed delay. For content below the fold, use full-page capture or scroll first to trigger lazy loading. If a page never becomes network-idle because it keeps requests open, change the wait condition.
The screenshot is sharp but unsuitable for a listing
Sharpness does not establish compliance. Check the target platform, device class, orientation, upload bounds, file format, and whether the image presents the real app experience without stretching or misleading promotional material.
