You can import a CSV, Excel file, dataframe, SQL result, or other supported table, filter and transform it visually, then run or reuse the generated code in a notebook, function, script, dashboard, or recurring report. It is not a full replacement for desktop Excel: it is primarily a visual front end for dataframe transformation.
The current Mito product includes the Mito Spreadsheet plus AI assistance, Streamlit and Dash integrations, database connectivity, and enterprise tooling. The spreadsheet-to-pandas workflow remains its core use case. See the official documentation and product site for current integration and plan details.
What Mito does
Mito addresses the gap between Excel’s approachable editing model and Python’s reproducibility. Instead of manually translating every filter, merge, formula, pivot, or export into pandas, you perform the operation in a spreadsheet-like grid. Mito places corresponding, commented pandas code in a notebook cell below the spreadsheet.

How automatic code generation works
Data import
Mito documents imports for pandas dataframes, CSV and Excel files, SQL results, website tables, remote-drive sources, and other supported tabular inputs. Importing an Excel workbook into dataframes is different from preserving every workbook style, macro, external link, print setting, or multi-sheet behavior.
Spreadsheet actions
Typical operations include renaming columns, filtering rows, sorting, creating or modifying columns, merging and concatenating tables, pivoting, charting, and exporting CSV or Excel results. The exact generated syntax can vary by Mito version and operation, so treat examples as a workflow rather than a promise of identical code.
Running the result
The generated code appears directly beneath the spreadsheet. Select that cell and use the Jupyter run control or Shift+Enter. The resulting dataframe can then be used with ordinary Python and pandas. Documentation details this process at Using the generated code.

The official installation page describes a desktop app as the easiest starting route and a pip installation for an existing Jupyter environment. The project repository currently shows:

Check current installation instructions for package requirements, supported Python versions, and environment-specific steps before installing.
A practical first workflow
- Create or open a Jupyter notebook in an environment supported by the current release.
- Install Mito using the current official instructions.
- Import a dataframe or file through Mito’s import controls.
- Filter the rows and add a calculated column in the spreadsheet.
- Inspect the pandas code generated below the grid.
- Run the code with the toolbar or Shift+Enter.
- Check row counts, data types, totals, and sample values in Python.
- Export the result, or copy the transformation into a function that accepts a new input file.
For recurring work, replace hard-coded paths and sheet names, define the input contract, add error handling, and run the finished script through your own scheduler and monitoring system.

Formulas are not identical to Excel formulas
Mito supports Excel-like formulas, but its calculation semantics differ from Excel’s live workbook engine. According to the data-interaction documentation:
- A formula normally applies to the entire column, not just one selected cell.
- A formula can self-reference a column, such as applying
UPPERto the existingNamecolumn. - Formulas do not automatically refresh after every upstream data change; you may need to resubmit the column formula.
Do not migrate a complex Excel model on the assumption that Mito will reproduce its dependency graph, volatile functions, macros, or workbook calculation behavior.

- Renamed or missing columns.
- Numbers arriving as text, changed date formats, or new blank values.
- Changed sheet names, vendor subtotal rows, or duplicate column names.
- Notebook-specific dataframe variables, indexes, filenames, or in-place mutations.
- Unexpected row counts, totals, or output formatting.
Wrap the transformation in a function, add tests and output checks, and pin or manage the Python environment. A new file must retain compatible column names, types, and structure for the generated workflow to run unchanged.
Mito AI
Mito AI accepts natural-language requests and can turn them into data transformations. Its resulting actions also produce code in the notebook cell. This is different from deterministic spreadsheet actions: an AI model interprets the request, so inspect the code and validate the result before accepting it. See Mito AI documentation.
Documentation has described free completion allowances inconsistently, including references to 100 and 150 requests, while Pro and Enterprise pages describe higher or unlimited allowances. Do not rely on either number without checking the live plan and documentation. Mito documents configurable OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Azure OpenAI, LiteLLM, and other provider routes at AI provider configuration.

Using the default provider route can send prompts or relevant data context to an external model service. Review the AI data-usage FAQ before processing payroll, customer, healthcare, financial, or proprietary information. Enterprise or self-managed provider configurations may offer different governance, but their actual data path must be verified.

Current first-party pages describe integrations with Jupyter notebooks, JupyterLab, JupyterHub, SageMaker, Streamlit, and Dash. An older FAQ lists narrower support and says Google Colab and VS Code were unsupported at that time. Because those statements can become stale, verify the current compatibility matrix before installing into Colab, VS Code, a hosted notebook, or managed Jupyter service.

Mito is strongest when an Excel file is really a repeatable data-processing task. It is weaker when the workbook itself—with macros, complex charts, external links, cell-level formatting, or print layouts—is the product.
Alternatives by job
- pandas: best final implementation layer for control, tests, performance, and integration.
- openpyxl: use for reading and modifying existing
.xlsxworkbooks, cells, styles, formulas, and worksheets: documentation. - XlsxWriter: use to create new, highly formatted Excel reports: documentation.
- Google Sheets API or gspread: use for remote Google Sheets operations; gspread is documented at docs.gspread.org.
- Microsoft Graph or Office Scripts: better when Excel Online or SharePoint remains the authoritative workbook.
- Streamlit or Dash: use for a custom internal application with your own authentication, layout, business logic, and deployment. Mito also documents integrations for both.
Plans and current product scope
The open-source Mito project is free and available at GitHub. Mito Pro is presented as an individual paid tier with features such as unlimited AI completions, telemetry controls, and additional formatting or transformation options. Mito Enterprise adds organization-oriented administration, database and LLM integrations, custom importers and functions, logging, reporting workflows, and related controls; details are listed at the enterprise feature page.
The reviewed public pages did not establish a reliable current dollar price for Pro or Enterprise. Check the vendor’s current plans rather than relying on old screenshots or third-party prices.
When Mito is a good fit
- You work with structured tables and already use, or want to learn, Python.
- You need a visual starting point but want reusable pandas code.
- Recurring reports share a stable schema.
- You want to expose Python transformations through a spreadsheet-style interface.
- The output feeds a Python analysis, dashboard, script, or scheduled workflow.
When to choose something else
- The workflow depends on full Excel fidelity, VBA, elaborate layouts, or external workbook links.
- You need browser-first collaborative editing rather than a Python environment.
- Input schemas change frequently without a validation layer.
- Policy prohibits sending AI prompts or data context to an external provider.
- You only need direct Google Sheets API access or straightforward workbook engineering.
- Your team does not want to maintain Python packages, notebooks, and generated-code pipelines.
The Bottom Line
Mito is best understood as a visual dataframe-workflow builder: use spreadsheet interactions to discover pandas code, then review, validate, and refactor that code before automating reports. It is an effective bridge from Excel-style work to Python, but not a universal Excel replacement or a substitute for production engineering.
