The MINISFORUM MS-03 is a compact workstation built around a fast mobile-class processor, unusually extensive storage expansion, and four high-speed wired network ports. It is a strong fit for CPU-heavy productivity, virtualization, and some local-AI or NAS roles—but its integrated graphics, memory configuration, expansion-slot limits, and price keep it from being a do-everything workstation.

PCWorld tested a Core Ultra 9 386H system with 32GB of DDR5-5600 in a single module and a 1TB SSD. That configuration delivered strong productivity results, but the single-channel memory also constrained the graphics performance. The review is useful evidence about that specific sample, not a guarantee for every MS-03 configuration.

What the MS-03 is—and who it suits

The MS-03 is a compact desktop workstation, not a laptop and not a system with a discrete graphics card. Its main proposition is pairing a high-end mobile-class Intel processor with unusually rich storage and networking options in a small enclosure. That combination makes it interesting for workloads that value CPU throughput, multiple fast drives, and wired connectivity more than high-end graphics.

Good fit

  • CPU-oriented productivity and multitasking.
  • A compact virtualization, development, or homelab host.
  • A high-speed NAS or storage server, provided the drive and network plan suits its available slots and ports.
  • Local inference workloads that fit the chosen model, backend, and system memory.

Less suitable

  • Gaming or graphics-heavy work that depends on a powerful GPU.
  • CUDA software without a compatible Nvidia GPU.
  • A build that requires a full-size, high-power graphics card.

PCWorld’s review of the MINISFORUM MS-03 describes the product as a capable compact workstation whose graphics performance is a significant limitation. The practical takeaway is to judge it as a compute-and-expansion platform, not as a small gaming tower.

PCWorld tested a Core Ultra 9 386H MS-03 with 32GB DDR5-5600 in one module and a 1TB YMTC PC41Q SSD. In PCMark 10, that test unit scored 9,385 overall, including 11,052 in Essentials, 19,591 in Productivity, and 10,360 in Digital Content Creation. The review also recorded 25,356 in spreadsheet performance, 8,864 in rendering and visualization, and 7,545 in video editing.

Those results support the case for responsive office and CPU-heavy work, but they do not mean every configuration or workload will perform identically. Benchmark scores reflect PCWorld’s reviewed hardware and test setup.

Graphics are the main performance compromise

The tested system’s integrated graphics scored 2,351 in 3DMark Time Spy; the overall score was 2,664, with a CPU score of 10,931. PCWorld also recorded 532 in Steel Nomad (5.33 fps), 269 in Speed Way (2.70 fps), and 10,068 in Solar Bay (38.28 fps). These are results from the reviewed configuration, not promises for other MS-03 units.

The distinction matters because the Core Ultra 9 processor’s strength does not translate into equivalent graphics capability. PCWorld reviewer Christoph Hoffmann explains: “The integrated graphics has to share its memory bandwidth with the processor and consequently suffers a noticeable loss of performance.” The review’s sample had just one memory module, so it ran in single-channel mode. A compatible second module may improve memory bandwidth, but buyers should confirm the exact SKU and supported memory before purchasing an upgrade.

For demanding video editing, larger local models, or graphics applications that need CUDA, plan around a suitable supported GPU rather than assuming the integrated graphics will suffice. The MS-03’s expansion slot has substantial physical and power constraints, discussed below.

Storage speed in the tested system

PCWorld measured the sample’s 1TB SSD at 5,791 MB/s sequential read and 5,428 MB/s sequential write in CrystalDiskMark. The reviewer noted that the drive did not fully use PCIe 4.0 capability. This is a result for the supplied drive, not a limit on the system’s storage expansion.

Can the MS-03 handle local AI?

It can be a local-inference node for models and settings that fit its available memory and software support, but the label “AI workstation” should not be read as a guarantee of fast or universal AI performance. The machine has integrated graphics, not a discrete GPU, and an NPU’s peak TOPS figure by itself does not predict how quickly a particular application will run. PCWorld notes that practical NPU gains depend on software support, while many applications continue to use the CPU or GPU.

MINISFORUM’s official MS-03 store page reports local-inference results using a Core Ultra 9 386H system with 64GB of memory, a specified Qwen model, and a named llama.cpp build. The same page says Qwen 35B requires at least 48GB of system memory. Those are manufacturer claims for the stated setup, not a guarantee for other models, quantizations, backends, operating systems, or memory configurations.

If a workflow requires CUDA, it needs a compatible Nvidia GPU. The MS-03’s x16-format slot is electrically PCIe 4.0 x4 and rated up to 75W, so it is not a route to installing a typical high-performance gaming card. For larger models or complex video work, choose a platform with GPU capacity suited to the task rather than inferring capability from the processor or NPU alone.

Configuration, firmware, and price need checking

MINISFORUM’s product listing names Core Ultra 9 386H and Core Ultra 5 336H options, and describes support for up to 128GB of DDR5-7200 memory. PCWorld’s independently tested system instead had one 32GB DDR5-5600 module. These are different configurations; do not assume the review’s performance, memory speed, or included parts apply to every listing. PCWorld also uses “S368H” in one passage, while the manufacturer’s listing identifies SKUs as MS-03-S386H and MS-03-S336H. Check the processor and model suffix on the exact product listing or unit label.

Price also depends on region and bundle. PCWorld’s October 6, 2026 review reported that its tested Core Ultra 9, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD configuration cost $1,520 at the time; it also cited a €1,079 barebones price against a €1,349 list price. Those dated figures are not current universal prices, and the barebones price is not directly comparable with a complete system. MINISFORUM’s store listing and product page may show different regional options. Check live pricing, shipping, included RAM and storage, operating system, and return terms for your location.

PCWorld’s review sample ran Windows 11 Pro 25H2, build 26200, with BIOS 0.07 dated May 13, 2026. The reviewer considered that an early firmware version and noted that later releases could affect fan control and power consumption. This describes the review unit only; check the BIOS version and update guidance for the exact unit you buy rather than assuming all current machines use that firmware.

What should you verify before buying?

  • Processor and model: Confirm whether the listing is the Core Ultra 9 386H or Core Ultra 5 336H configuration and check the complete SKU.
  • Memory: Confirm capacity, speed, module count, and channel configuration. If adding a second SO-DIMM, check compatibility with the supplied module and the exact system specification.
  • Storage bundle: Check whether an SSD is included and which drive adapters come with the selected configuration.
  • GPU needs: Confirm that integrated graphics and a 75W, PCIe 4.0 x4 expansion slot are sufficient for your software and intended card.
  • Networking accessories: Budget separately for compatible SFP+ transceivers or DAC cables; verify compatibility before ordering.
  • Local AI software: Check model memory requirements, supported backend, and whether the application can use the system’s CPU, integrated GPU, or NPU as intended.
