It is a component—not a transmitter, complete implant, or evidence that a finished medical device is approved or clinically effective. Statek’s CX16 family is one example; its manufacturer lists medical telemetry among the applications.
What is the miniature telemetry crystal used in implantable medical devices?
The term refers to a small surface-mount quartz crystal resonator used in frequency-control circuitry. In an implant’s RF electronics, the crystal supplies a frequency reference for the oscillator circuit. It does not send telemetry data by itself, and it is not implanted as a standalone medical device.
The 2011 launch report described IQD’s CX-16 as a ceramic-package component measuring 2.0 × 1.2 × 0.4 mm, initially offered at 24 MHz and 26.5 MHz. Those are historical launch details, not a complete statement of today’s orderable options. EE Times reported the launch on April 26, 2011.
What does the current CX16 range include?
Statek’s current product page lists the CX16 at a 2.0 × 1.2 mm package size and gives family frequency ranges of 24 MHz to 100 MHz and 32 kHz to 180 kHz. The CX16 AT-Cut datasheet specifies 24 MHz to 100 MHz. Because the product-page family ranges and the AT-cut datasheet do not describe identical scopes, confirm the precise CX16 variant and frequency with Statek before selecting or ordering it. What medical applications does the manufacturer name?
Statek lists medical telemetry, including MICS and BLE, and cardiac rhythm management among the CX16 AT applications. Its broader application material also names neurostimulators, infusion pumps, and cochlear implants. These examples describe intended application areas for the component; they do not establish regulatory clearance, safety, or clinical effectiveness for any finished implant or system. Statek’s datasheet is the source for the CX16 AT application list.
Which electrical specifications matter when choosing one?
Frequency and package size are only part of a design decision. The 2011 launch report gave calibration tolerance of ±5 ppm, temperature stability of ±10 ppm over −10 °C to +70 °C and ±30 ppm over −55 °C to +125 °C, and maximum aging better than ±3 ppm over the first year. These dated figures describe the launch product as reported in 2011; do not assume they apply to every current CX16 variant. Consult the current datasheet for the exact part under consideration.

- Frequency: Match the crystal’s specified frequency to the oscillator and RF design.
- Tolerance and stability: Check initial calibration tolerance and frequency variation over the device’s actual operating-temperature range.
- Aging: Account for frequency change over the required service life using the applicable manufacturer specification.
- Oscillator compatibility: Verify electrical requirements such as load capacitance and equivalent series resistance against the full datasheet and oscillator circuit.
- Implementation constraints: Check package height as well as footprint, required environmental qualification and termination, and procurement availability.
How should engineers compare the CX16 with another crystal?
Statek’s product page lists several crystal families, but that alone does not show that another family is interchangeable with the CX16. Compare candidates against the circuit’s target frequency, board-space limits, operating environment, and oscillator requirements. Use each candidate’s current datasheet and manufacturer support to verify the parameters; do not choose by package size or application label alone.

The cited component materials also do not establish regulatory approval or clinical outcomes for any finished implant. Device-level suitability and approval depend on the complete product and its applicable evaluation, not the presence of a particular crystal.
