The right choice depends first on what your exact mini PC supports. An internal low-profile GPU is the more integrated option when the computer has a compatible PCIe slot, enough room, and adequate power. An external GPU can make sense when the mini PC explicitly supports the chosen eGPU connection and you want the graphics card in a separate, reusable enclosure. Neither option is universally faster or cheaper: compare complete configurations for your workload.

How the two setups work

External GPU

An eGPU places a desktop graphics card in a separate dock or enclosure, connected to the mini PC through a supported high-speed interface. OCuLink and Thunderbolt are examples found on manufacturer-listed products, but the connector name alone does not establish that a particular host, dock, card, cable, firmware, operating system, and driver combination will work together. Check the exact models and their manufacturers’ compatibility and setup instructions.

OCuLink is used as a direct PCIe connection in some eGPU designs. That design choice does not guarantee compatibility or a particular performance result. Dock completeness also varies: for example, AOOSTAR says its EG01 OCuLink dock does not include a GPU or power supply. Confirm what the listing includes before calculating the cost.

Internal low-profile GPU

A low-profile graphics card installs inside the compact computer and occupies a PCIe slot. It must fit the case and slot and stay within the system’s power and cooling limits. A product described as low-profile is not automatically compatible with every mini PC; check the card’s length, bracket height, slot width, power connectors, and the host’s clearance and power supply.

Compare the trade-offs

Factor External GPU Low-profile internal GPU
Host requirement The exact mini PC must support the selected eGPU interface and configuration. The computer must have a suitable PCIe slot and enough clearance and power.
Space Adds a dock or enclosure outside the computer, plus a cable and possibly a separate power supply. Stays inside the case, but card dimensions and slot layout constrain fit.
Upgrade and reuse The separate GPU may be easier to move to another compatible setup; compatibility still needs checking. The card remains part of the internal build and is limited by the case and system.
Performance Depends on the GPU, host, connection, application, and display path; no universal performance penalty is established. Depends on the card and host configuration; no matched comparison here establishes that it will outperform a particular eGPU.
Cost Calculate the dock, GPU, power supply if needed, cable, and any required accessories. Calculate the card and any system, case, or power-supply changes needed to install it.

What to verify before buying

For an external GPU

  • Confirm that the exact mini PC model documents support for the intended eGPU interface. An ordinary USB-C port does not, by itself, prove eGPU support.
  • Check the dock’s supported GPU dimensions, power supply requirements, connectors, cable, and bundle contents. Some open docks are sold without a GPU or PSU.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for connection and disconnection. Hot-plug behavior and setup requirements vary by interface and product.
  • Check compatibility across the host, dock, GPU, firmware, operating system, and drivers rather than relying on a port label.

For an internal card

  • Verify that the computer has a usable PCIe slot and that the card’s bracket, length, and width fit the case.
  • Check the selected card’s power draw and auxiliary connectors against the system’s PSU capacity and available cables.
  • Allow for the system’s cooling and airflow limits; a card fitting physically does not establish that the complete system can power and cool it appropriately.

Performance is configuration-specific

There is no reliable universal percentage to apply to an eGPU. The Thunderbolt Technology eGFX brief says: “The eGFX performance depends on many variables such as the GPU/CPU architecture and power, amount of graphics memory/memory bus width, clock frequencies, PCIe lanes for Thunderbolt 3 connection and the application design itself.” The brief dates to 2017, so its general list of variables is useful, but it does not establish current product compatibility or performance for a specific setup.

For a meaningful comparison, match the GPU, host processor, application, resolution, settings, and display connection as closely as possible. If you cannot find a benchmark for the exact or closely matched configurations, treat speed claims as estimates rather than a settled result.

  • Note: The OCulink interface does not support hot plugging, and the computer needs to be turned off to unplug the cable.

Examples: what the specifications do and do not tell you

  • GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3050 OC Low Profile 6G: GIGABYTE lists a length of 181 mm. That is a measurement for this particular card, not a guarantee that it fits a specific mini PC; check the rest of the card and host dimensions.
  • Reference GeForce RTX 3050 6GB: NVIDIA lists 70 W graphics-card power for its reference configuration and notes that add-in-card specifications can vary. Use the selected card maker’s specifications when checking a system’s power budget.
  • MINISFORUM DEG2: MINISFORUM lists a dock with OCuLink and Thunderbolt 5 and states 80 Gbps total bandwidth for the Thunderbolt 5 ports. That advertised interface figure is not a measured GPU application result and does not by itself prove compatibility with a particular mini PC.

Which option fits your use case?

Choose an internal low-profile card when

  • Your computer has a documented, usable PCIe slot and the card fits its case and power limits.
  • You want a more integrated compact build without a separate GPU enclosure on the desk.
  • You have verified the exact card’s dimensions, slot width, power requirements, and cooling needs.

Choose an eGPU when

  • Your exact mini PC explicitly supports the external GPU interface you plan to use.
  • You value keeping the GPU separate so it can be upgraded or reused in another compatible setup.
  • You have checked the dock’s compatibility, power requirements, cable, and included components, and are comfortable with the additional enclosure and connection steps.

Compare the complete builds

Before deciding, price every required component and consider the workload you actually run, the space available, portability, power and cooling, and setup requirements. The manufacturer examples above illustrate possible products and specifications; they are not an apples-to-apples test. No current matched benchmark or total-cost comparison here settles which route is faster or better value for every buyer.
