You can make a useful Minecraft house on your first night with a simple block shelter, a door, and light in dark areas. In Java Edition 1.18 and later, monsters spawn only where block light is 0, but the available guidance does not establish one torch spacing that makes every house safe across editions and versions.
How do you build a simple Minecraft house?
Start with a shelter, not an elaborate build. Minecraft.net’s first-night guide, published June 5, 2023, explains that the goal is to keep mobs from reaching you by putting blocks between you and them. A compact enclosure is enough to begin.
Make a temporary shelter
- Collect wood and use it to make basic tools and building materials.
- Choose a spot and place blocks around yourself to form walls. A small enclosed space is faster to build than a large house.
- Leave an opening for a door, then close the shelter so there is a barrier between you and approaching mobs.
- Put light inside, especially in dark corners, and add a bed if you have one.
Minecraft Education’s first-night checklist highlights wood, tools, shelter, a door, light, and a bed as priorities. Treat the bed as a useful addition to that checklist rather than a requirement for making a basic enclosure.
Temporary shelter or finished house?
A temporary enclosure prioritizes speed and a basic barrier. A finished house gives you room to organize and decorate, but it is not necessary before you have somewhere enclosed to spend the night. The official guidance supports shelter as the immediate goal; it does not rank particular wall blocks or house designs by protection.

How should you light a Minecraft house?
Place torches or other available light sources in dark areas, including interior corners and spaces where darkness remains after you build. Minecraft.net recommends torches for first-night survival and explains that they can be crafted with sticks and coal in its guide.
There is no universal torch count or spacing supported by the cited guidance. A small room and a large multi-room house do not have the same layout, and the sources do not give a measured spacing rule. Rather than rely on a fixed number, look for unlit areas and add light where needed.

What light level do hostile mobs spawn at?
The familiar light-level rule depends on edition and version. The Java Edition 1.18 release notes say: “Monsters now only spawn in places where the light from blocks is 0 (sky light still prevents spawning like before).” That is a version-specific Java statement, not proof of identical mechanics in every edition or version. Minecraft.net’s 2023 first-night guide also says most hostile mobs appear when the game’s light source reaches 0 in an area near the player.
For a Java Edition 1.18-or-later house, keeping block light above 0 in an area addresses the spawn condition described in those release notes. The cited sources do not establish current parity with Bedrock Edition or provide a complete, edition-by-edition guide to spawning.

Will a lit house keep every mob away?
No. Lighting dark areas helps reduce the chance of hostile mobs spawning under the conditions described above, but it is not a promise that every mob will stay away or that every area is spawn-proof. The 2023 Minecraft.net guide notes that many Overworld hostile mobs burn in sunlight, while illagers, pillagers, and Endermen are exceptions to that sunlight behavior. That example is not a complete list of mob spawning or behavior exceptions.
Use both a physical barrier and sensible lighting: blocks keep approaching mobs from reaching you, while light addresses dark-area spawning where the cited mechanics apply. Do not treat either measure as a guarantee of complete safety across all mobs, locations, editions, or versions.

What should you prioritize on the first night?
- Wood and tools: Gather wood and make basic tools so you can collect and place materials.
- Shelter and a door: Enclose a small space and close its entrance to put blocks between you and approaching mobs.
- Light: Craft torches with sticks and coal when available, and illuminate dark parts of the shelter.
- Bed: Add one when you can, following the Minecraft Education first-night checklist.
