Minecraft Dungeons II, released September 29, 2026, keeps the original’s action-RPG and dungeon-crawling foundation but changes how you explore and build your hero. The biggest differences are a connected world instead of separate, selected missions; newly added jumping; and expanded gear customization. You can play solo or with up to four players, and Mojang says the first game is not required.

The sequel does not abandon the original’s core premise: both are action RPGs built around combat, equipment, and dungeons. The change is that those dungeons sit within a connected world, and the sequel gives players new movement and loadout options. Xbox Wire’s gameplay details come from its account of a demo, rather than independent testing.
Is Minecraft Dungeons II open world?
Mojang and Xbox Wire describe a fixed, contiguous, interconnected world with dungeons, rather than the original’s discrete missions selected from a menu. That makes the sequel more connected to explore, but the available description does not establish that it is an open world in the broader sense of a seamless, unrestricted map. The sequel also introduces the Sift, a new dimension alongside the Overworld.
How have movement and builds changed?
Jumping and exploration
Jumping is new in the sequel and adds a direct movement option for navigating and exploring its connected setting. The Sift provides another setting to explore, distinct from the Overworld.

More equipment slots
Both games let equipment define a hero’s playstyle instead of assigning a fixed class. In Xbox Wire’s demo account, a sequel loadout had a melee weapon, a ranged weapon, three artifact slots, four armor slots, and three talisman slots. The source identifies armor and talisman slots as new systems; Mojang’s product page also highlights expanded ways to customize loadouts. These slot counts describe the demo account, not a separately verified final-game inventory specification.
Does Minecraft Dungeons II have couch co-op and cross-play?
Yes. Mojang lists couch co-op, online cross-play, and mixed co-op, and says players can play alone or with up to four players. The launch post and current FAQ are the relevant sources for these present-tense modes; an earlier pre-launch announcement is not needed to establish current availability.

Do I need to play Minecraft Dungeons first?
No. Mojang’s FAQ says playing the original is not necessary before starting Minecraft Dungeons II. Returning players may recognize references, but the sequel is presented as accessible to newcomers.
What is the story and setting?
The launch announcement places the sequel after the events of Minecraft Dungeons. Rifts and disturbances emerge, and the Illager High Council leads the new threat. The adventure takes players through the Overworld and into the Sift.

Which platforms is Minecraft Dungeons II on?
Mojang’s FAQ lists Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Store availability and purchase formats can vary by region and platform, so check the relevant platform store for your location.
What does the Deluxe Edition include?
Mojang describes the Deluxe Edition as including four additional hero skins, the Soul Cape, the Blub pet, and DLC 1 and 2 when released. The DLC should not be treated as playable until it is released. Whether Deluxe is worthwhile depends on how much you value the cosmetics and whether you want the future DLC; compare its current price with the base edition in your store.

Is there a Hero Cape reward for owning the original?
Mojang’s FAQ describes a Hero Cape reward for people who have played Minecraft Dungeons and log into Minecraft Dungeons II with the same Microsoft account by December 31, 2026. It says prior play through Game Pass or Steam may qualify if the same Microsoft account is used. Because this is a dated promotion with account and geography terms, check the current FAQ for applicable conditions before relying on eligibility.
