These are documented controls, not a benchmark. Neither source publishes a controlled score proving one service is better at photorealism, anime, typography, prompt adherence, or consistency.

Do not call either one superior without identical trials.
Anime and graphic illustration
Use the same character sheet, line-weight description, palette, pose, and expression in both systems. Midjourney documents personalization and moodboards, and its February 26, 2026 update discusses Personalization and Moodboards for niji 7. That establishes steering mechanisms, not a quality ranking.
Watercolor and painterly work
Specify paper texture, pigment behavior, edge softness, wash density, and the degree of abstraction. Compare whether revisions preserve the original composition. Record every style reference or template so the test measures the workflow rather than hidden assistance.

Lock aspect ratio, shot size, time of day, production-design elements, and color script. Midjourney’s web Editor supports cropping, panning, aspect-ratio changes, and Vary Region. ChatGPT Images supports aspect-ratio selection and conversational edits. Evaluate continuity across revisions instead of judging one frame.
Text in images
Use exact strings with punctuation, mixed case, and several lines. Score character accuracy, spacing, hierarchy, and legibility at the intended display size. OpenAI explicitly says ChatGPT Images can follow instructions to add text; that statement is not a comparative test result.
Logos, posters, and transparent assets
Test a fixed wordmark, clear-area requirements, and export background. ChatGPT Images documents templates such as poster or logo starting points and transparent-background output. Verify that transparency survives the downloaded file and that text remains exact.
Localized editing
Ask both systems to change one marked object while preserving everything else. OpenAI warns that selected highlights are not always precise and edits may extend beyond the selected area. Midjourney’s Vary Region and Editor provide a distinct region-oriented workflow. Report spillover rather than hiding it.
Midjourney workflow: where its controls matter
Start with the Imagine bar, then use variations, upscalers, Zoom Out, Pan, or Editor as appropriate. Midjourney says users own images and videos they create, subject to exceptions. Which should you try first?
- Choose Midjourney first if explicit style references, moodboards, personalization profiles, and a dedicated variation/refinement workflow are central to your process.
