If middle-click is not working on YouTube, first check what you clicked: pressing the wheel on a video title or thumbnail link commonly opens that link in a background tab, while clicking the player or empty page area may do something different. Test an ordinary link on another site before changing settings or replacing your mouse. In the meantime, Ctrl-click or right-click the video link and choose Open Link in New Tab.
What should middle-click do on YouTube?
Middle-clicking a hyperlink is a browser gesture, not a universal action for every part of a webpage. On most browsers, clicking a link with the mouse wheel opens it in a new tab; Chrome describes that tab as opening in the background. See GNOME Help’s description of middle-click and the Chrome team’s explanation of opening links in background tabs.
On YouTube, try the middle button on a visible video title or thumbnail that links to a video. A click on the player itself, a player control, or blank space is not the same as clicking a link. Closing a tab and auto-scrolling are also separate middle-button behaviors; identify which action you expect before troubleshooting.
Fix middle-click on YouTube with these nine checks
Work through these checks in order, changing one thing at a time. After each change, repeat the same test on a visible video link title or thumbnail so you can tell whether the result changed.

- Better than touchpad: Get more done by adding M185 to your laptop; according to a recent study, laptop users who chose this mouse over a touchpad were 50% more productive (3) and worked 30% faster (4)
- Click a video link, not the player. Middle-click a video title or thumbnail. If you were clicking the video player or empty page, try an actual link instead.
- Press the wheel straight down. On many mice, pushing the scroll wheel down registers a middle-click; rolling it does not. GNOME Help also documents simultaneous left- and right-button input, and a three-finger tap on supported touchpads, where configured.
- Test an ordinary link elsewhere. Try middle-clicking a link on another website. If it fails there too—or in other applications—focus first on the mouse, its button mapping, or its connection.
- Reconnect or cross-test the mouse. Reconnect a wired mouse or its wireless receiver where practical, then try another mouse if one is available. These tests help isolate the cause; reconnecting is not a guaranteed fix. A Mozilla Support user report describes middle-click working again after reconnecting a mouse, but one report does not establish how common that cause is.
- Use a workaround while diagnosing. Ctrl-click a video link, or right-click it and choose Open Link in New Tab. The exact context-menu wording can vary by browser.
- Check Firefox’s middle-click preferences if Firefox is affected. Firefox support materials identify
browser.tabs.opentabfor.middleclickandmiddlemouse.openNewWindowas preferences that can affect what middle-click does. These are advanced, version-sensitive settings: inspect them carefully and avoid changing unrelated preferences. See the Firefox support discussion. - Temporarily disable relevant extensions. Start with extensions that modify YouTube, mouse gestures, tabs, or links. Retest, then re-enable extensions one at a time to identify a possible interaction. A GitHub issue reports a Firefox 125.0.3 and Improve YouTube 4.805 interaction affecting middle-button smooth scrolling on the player. It is a single case, not proof of a general YouTube defect.
- Compare another browser or a clean profile. If middle-click works there, concentrate on settings or extensions in the browser where it fails. If it fails across browsers but works on other sites, revisit the click target and any YouTube-specific extensions.
- Consider hardware replacement only after cross-testing. If another mouse works and the original fails on ordinary links across sites or applications, the original mouse or its mapping may be at fault. If the failure is limited to YouTube or one browser, replacing the mouse is unlikely to address it.
Use the failure pattern to choose your next step
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Middle-click fails on other sites or in applications too | Check the mouse button or mapping and connection; cross-test another mouse. |
| It opens links elsewhere but not YouTube links | Confirm you are clicking a video link, then compare another browser or profile and temporarily disable relevant extensions. |
| It works on YouTube links but not on the player | Check whether the action you expect applies to the player; investigate player-specific settings or extensions. |
| You need a video open in a new tab now | Ctrl-click its link or use the context menu’s Open Link in New Tab option. |
When is this a mouse problem?
A mouse issue becomes more likely when middle-click fails on ordinary links across multiple sites and in other applications, especially if another mouse works on the same computer. If the gesture works everywhere except one browser or YouTube page, investigate the link target, browser settings, and extensions before buying new hardware. The available documentation and individual reports do not establish how often this particular YouTube symptom occurs or a single cause that applies to all users.
