Microsoft confirmed that its official @Microsoft account on X was accessed without authorization and said it had secured the account and removed the unauthorized posts. The account had promoted a Clippy-themed cryptocurrency, but reports do not establish that a pump-and-dump was completed or verify trading, victims, or losses. Microsoft disavowed the token and said it had no affiliation with it.
What happened to Microsoft’s X account?
On October 1, 2026, Microsoft’s official X account followed a Clippy-themed crypto account, reposted one of its posts, and displayed a Clippy profile image, according to The Verge. The posts were removed. An unusual apology post appeared later and was deleted roughly 30 minutes afterward.
Microsoft spokesperson Brent Colburn confirmed unauthorized access and said the account had been secured, the unauthorized posts removed, and the circumstances remained under investigation. The report did not identify how the account was accessed or who was responsible.

Coverage described the activity as appearing to promote a $Clippy token. That supports describing it as an apparent crypto promotion, not as proof that a pump-and-dump trading scheme was completed. The reports do not verify token trading volume, price movement attributable to the posts, victims, or financial losses.
#1 Best Overall
- MYSTERY-PACK COLLECTING: Each blind bag hides one of six eerily adorable characters from the all-new Limbz brand.
- POSEABLE LIMBS: Bendable arms and legs twist, wrap, and hang for endless expressive play and display.
- BUILT-IN CLIP: Ideal for on-the-go attachment to bags, backpacks, zippers, and more.
- SERIES 1 LINEUP: Includes Mermaid, Creepy Doll, Pumpkinhead, Wolf, Zombie, and Clown—each with bold colors and personality.
- Limbz introduces a collectible universe that feels different from anything else in the plush category—quirky, expressive, and packed with character.
The distinction matters: unauthorized promotion from a high-profile account can create a misleading impression of legitimacy, but the available reporting does not establish what happened in the market after the posts appeared.
Did Microsoft endorse or authorize the Clippy token?
No. In a statement reproduced by BleepingComputer on October 2, 2026, Microsoft said it had not authorized, sponsored, endorsed, or granted permission for a cryptocurrency token associated with Clippy, Microsoft, or $MSFT. The company said it would pursue appropriate legal action and seek removal of the unauthorized token and related materials.
Do not treat a post from the compromised account as evidence of Microsoft’s support. Microsoft explicitly disavowed affiliation with the token, its creators, and related projects. This article does not direct readers to the token.

How this differs from Microsoft India’s 2024 account compromise
Microsoft’s @Microsoft account incident is separate from a June 3, 2024 hijacking of Microsoft India’s @MicrosoftIndia account reported by BleepingComputer. The earlier incident involved a Roaring Kitty impersonation and a purported GameStop token presale site. The report said that connecting a wallet and authorizing transactions on that site could expose users to asset draining.
| Incident | Account and date | Reported theme and exposure | What remains unestablished |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current incident | @Microsoft, October 1, 2026 | Clippy-themed crypto promotion appeared on the account. | Access method, responsible actor, verified trading, victims, and losses are not established in the reports. |
| Earlier incident | @MicrosoftIndia, June 3, 2024 | Roaring Kitty impersonation and a purported token presale lure; the report described wallet connection and transaction approval as the risky user actions. | This was a separate account and event; it does not establish how the 2026 @Microsoft account was compromised. |
Microsoft’s January 19, 2024 disclosure about Midnight Blizzard is also unrelated. Microsoft described password spraying against a legacy non-production test-tenant account, followed by access to a small percentage of corporate email accounts. The disclosure does not connect Midnight Blizzard to either X-account incident. See the Microsoft Security Response Center disclosure.

What is known—and not known—about the October 2026 incident
- Confirmed by Microsoft: someone accessed the account without authorization; Microsoft said it secured the account and removed unauthorized posts.
- Reported account activity: the account followed a Clippy-themed crypto account, reposted a post, and used a Clippy image.
- Microsoft’s position: it did not authorize or endorse the associated token and said it would pursue removal and legal action.
- Not established in the reports: the entry method, attacker identity, token issuance mechanics, trading activity, attributable price effects, number of affected people, or losses.
Because Microsoft said it was still investigating, claims about the cause or financial consequences would go beyond what the reports establish.

The attack method in this case is unknown, so there is no basis to say that a particular security measure would have prevented it. X’s guidance nevertheless recommends using two-factor authentication with an authentication app or a hardware security key. Its Help Center also warns that phishing messages can imitate legitimate services and points users to compromised-account guidance.
