Microsoft’s 3 June 2024 Sweden announcement is a SEK 33.7 billion investment over two years, not a $3.5 billion deal. The plan combines cloud and AI infrastructure with training for 250,000 people.
The $3.5 billion figure is associated with a separate Microsoft investment announcement for Germany in February 2024. Treating it as the Swedish amount mixes two national announcements.
What Microsoft announced in Sweden
Microsoft described the package as its largest single investment in Sweden during its 40-year presence in the country. It covers expanded cloud and artificial-intelligence capacity, advanced computing hardware and a nationwide skills program. The Swedish government summarized the package as approximately SEK 34 billion.

Why the $3.5 billion figure is attached to Germany
Microsoft made a separate Germany announcement in February 2024 that was reported at about €3.3 billion, or roughly $3.5 billion. That figure belongs to Germany, not Sweden.

| Sweden | 3 June 2024 | SEK 33.7 billion over two years | Swedish cloud and AI infrastructure | 20,000 GPUs, a 250,000-person skills target and regions in Sandviken, Gävle and Staffanstorp |
| Germany | February 2024 | About €3.3 billion, reported as $3.5 billion | Germany | GPU capacity, training totals and a comparable Swedish-style regional breakdown were not stated in the announcement record described here |
Currency conversions also move with exchange rates, so the Swedish commitment should be reported in the original SEK figure and time horizon rather than converted into the German headline amount.
Where Microsoft’s Swedish AI capacity will run
The 20,000 GPUs are planned for Microsoft’s existing datacenter regions in Sandviken, Gävle and Staffanstorp. The Swedish government’s description also refers to server-hall expansion. The announcement therefore describes an expansion of infrastructure already operating in Sweden, rather than naming an entirely new fourth region.
Who the 250,000 training places are for
Microsoft’s skills effort is designed to reach several groups rather than one job category:

What the investment could mean for jobs and Swedish companies
A Microsoft datacenter fact sheet published in April 2024 listed 145 current employees and estimated more than 1,299 peak construction jobs for new datacenter construction. Those figures are Microsoft Local estimates and projections, not a guarantee of permanent employment or a post-construction headcount.
Microsoft cited Boliden, Gunnebo, Kry, Lindex and Region Västerbotten as Swedish customers using its technology. Kry CEO Johannes Schildt said:

Microsoft also reported that 75 percent of Swedish knowledge workers use AI and that 46 percent had started using it in the previous six months. Those are figures reported by Microsoft in 2024; the announcement does not provide the underlying survey methodology, so they should not be treated as an independently audited national statistic.

What is confirmed and what remains a plan
The announcements establish the investment commitment, intended GPU deployment, named locations and 250,000-person training target. They also provide workforce estimates and describe energy and resilience initiatives. They do not establish audited September 2026 delivery outcomes for every GPU, training place, construction job or battery installation.
