Microsoft’s latest Windows 11 cumulative update in the September 2026 release sequence is KB5124010, published September 22 as a non-security preview for versions 24H2 and 25H2. It adds File Explorer improvements and fixes camera, File History, and Sysmon problems, but it is not the month’s security update. The security release is KB5124008 (September 8), followed by the out-of-band KB5129195 (September 14), which addressed urgent compatibility failures and added protection for CVE-2026-62721.
Which Windows 11 update is KB5124010?
KB5124010 is a cumulative, non-security preview update for all editions of Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. It reports these OS builds:
| Windows version | Build after KB5124010 | Release type |
|---|---|---|
| 24H2 | 26100.9550 | September 22, 2026 non-security preview |
| 25H2 | 26200.9550 | September 22, 2026 non-security preview |
Microsoft calls it the final non-security preview for Windows 11 24H2. Preview updates are optional quality releases; the regular monthly security update remains the separate release for the month.
What changed in KB5124010?
File Explorer improvements
- HTML files downloaded from the web have a new Preview anyway route in the preview experience.
- Non-HTML files, including PDFs, can preview automatically.
- File Explorer Home remembers whether sections were expanded or collapsed.
- Cloud-file thumbnail previews in the Details pane are more reliable.
- An address-bar behavior problem was corrected.
Microsoft is delivering some changes gradually, so an eligible computer may not receive every visible feature at the same time as another computer.

Camera, File History, and Sysmon fixes
- A built-in camera problem affecting the Camera app and other camera-using applications was fixed.
- A File History defect that could block backup or restore operations to external drives or network locations was fixed in updates released September 22 onward.
- Sysmon now handles malformed executable-header validation correctly.
- A stop error caused by an uninitialized handle in the Sysmon file-system filter driver was fixed.
- Sysmon no longer generates a false Event ID 25 process-tampering alert for
smss.exe.
The package also includes servicing stack update KB5124009, build 26100.9539, intended to improve Windows Update installation reliability.
Copilot+ PC AI components
On Copilot+ PCs only, Microsoft lists version 1.2608.951.0 for Image Search, Content Extraction, Semantic Analysis, and Settings Model. These components do not install on other Windows PCs or on Windows Server.

How the three September updates differ
| Update | Date and type | Versions and builds | Main purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| KB5124008 | September 8 security update | 24H2: 26100.9445; 25H2: 26200.9445 | Monthly security and quality fixes |
| KB5129195 | September 14 out-of-band cumulative update | Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 | Protection for CVE-2026-62721 plus urgent compatibility fixes |
| KB5124010 | September 22 non-security preview | 24H2: 26100.9550; 25H2: 26200.9550 | File Explorer changes and additional quality fixes |
These releases are cumulative but not interchangeable. KB5124008 is the normal security release, KB5129195 is an emergency follow-up, and KB5124010 is an optional preview.

KB5129195 added protection for CVE-2026-62721, which Microsoft identifies as a Windows User-Mode Power Service elevation-of-privilege vulnerability. It also addressed:

- USB Audio Class 1.0 failures in multichannel modes such as eight-channel or 3D audio.
The USB audio fix does not cover every USB Audio Class 1.0 symptom.
Known issues administrators should check
Machine Identity Isolation and Active Directory trust
After KB5124008 or later updates, some Credential Guard-protected machine accounts can lose their secure channel with an on-premises Active Directory domain. Users may be unable to sign in interactively and see a trust-relationship error.

- Instantly productive. Simpler, more intuitive UI and effortless navigation. New features like snap layouts help you manage multiple tasks with ease.
- Smarter collaboration. Have effective online meetings. Share content and mute/unmute right from the taskbar (1) Stay focused with intelligent noise cancelling and background blur.(2)
- Reassuringly consistent. Have confidence that your applications will work. Familiar deployment and update tools. Accelerate adoption with expanded deployment policies.
- Powerful security. Safeguard data and access anywhere with hardware-based isolation, encryption, and malware protection built in.
Microsoft states that Machine Identity Isolation enforcement is supported only when domain controllers use Windows Server 2025 Domain Functional Level or higher. Organizations on other domain-controller environments should disable the feature using the same management method that enabled it. Because this is an administrator-level identity and recovery change, confirm Microsoft’s current guidance and maintain a tested recovery path before altering enforcement. Microsoft’s September 22 notes say a future Windows update is planned to temporarily prevent enforcement while improvements are made.

Some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices can show Code 10, produce no sound, or expose volume controls that are unresponsive or stuck at zero. KB5129195 resolves the reported eight-channel and 3D-audio failure, but Microsoft’s KB5124010 notes still list other USB Audio Class 1.0 symptoms as unresolved. Check the current release-health entry before deploying broadly.

Does the September Windows 11 update fix File History?
Yes. Microsoft says the File History backup and restore problem reported after KB5124008 is resolved by updates released from September 22 onward, including KB5124010. If a device still fails, confirm that the applicable cumulative update is installed and then test the particular external drive or network destination again.
How to install KB5124010
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- If the preview is offered, select Download & install, then restart when Windows requests it.
Microsoft also provides the update through Microsoft Update Catalog and enterprise deployment channels. Catalog packages must match the device architecture, and some MSU files require a specified installation order. For ordinary PCs, Windows Update is the safer default. For image deployment, Microsoft requires boot.stl to be included and matched to the Windows version and architecture.
Rollout is phased: gradual-rollout features can vary by device, while normal-rollout content becomes broadly available to eligible devices. Devices that already contain earlier updates download only newly applicable content.
Windows 11 24H2 support dates
| Edition | End of updates for 24H2 |
|---|---|
| Home and Pro | October 13, 2026 |
| Enterprise and Education | October 12, 2027 |
These dates apply by edition, not to every Windows 11 24H2 installation. Home and Pro devices should move to a supported release before October 13, 2026 to continue receiving updates; Enterprise and Education devices have the longer date shown above.
What to do before deploying broadly
- Identify whether each device is running 24H2 or 25H2 and record its current build.
- Install KB5124010 first on a representative pilot group if you want its non-security fixes before the next monthly security release.
- For domain-joined systems using Credential Guard, test machine secure-channel health and interactive sign-in.
- For USB Audio Class 1.0 hardware, test both stereo and multichannel modes after updating.
- Verify File History backup and restore to the actual external or network destination used by the organization.
- Review Microsoft’s current release-health notes immediately before wider deployment because known-issue status can change.
The Bottom Line
Install KB5124010 when you need its File Explorer, camera, File History, or Sysmon fixes and can validate preview-update behavior. Treat KB5124008 as the September security baseline, and use KB5129195 where its vulnerability protection or urgent compatibility fixes apply.
