Mico is Microsoft Copilot’s animated character—not a new AI model—and Microsoft says it is moving out of Copilot Voice while continuing in Learn Live. Microsoft introduced Mico in October 2025 as an optional visual presence for voice conversations. The Clippy comparison captures the familiar idea of an on-screen assistant, but Mico and Clippy are different products built for different interactions.
What is Mico?
Mico is an animated character that visually responds during Copilot voice conversations. At its October 23, 2025 launch, Microsoft described it as “expressive, customizable, and warm,” and said it could listen and react with changing colors, animation, and expressions. Microsoft framed the character as a way to make voice conversations feel more natural; that is the company’s stated aim, not a demonstrated outcome. Microsoft’s Copilot Fall Release announcement presented Mico among 12 new features in the broader release, not as a Mico-specific feature count.
Mico is part of the Copilot interface rather than a separate AI model. Microsoft’s current support FAQ describes it as an animated character that responds visually during Copilot Voice conversations.

Only as a design reference. Clippy, also known as Clippit, was Microsoft Office’s on-screen assistant; Mico is an animated presence for conversational Copilot. The comparison makes sense because both put a character on screen alongside software, but it does not make Mico Clippy’s literal return or successor.

The Associated Press reported at Mico’s launch that it appeared as a floating cartoon face and could be turned off. Microsoft AI product and growth executive Jacob Andreou described its reactions in emotional terms: “When you talk about something sad, you can see Mico’s face change. You can see it dance around and move as it gets excited with you.” The analogy also recalls why an assistant character can be divisive: MIT research scientist Bryan Reimer told AP that Clippy “was not well-attuned to user needs at the time.” These comments offer context on the design, not evidence that Mico is more useful or better received.
The Associated Press’s October 2025 report on Mico covered the launch and the Clippy comparison.

Can I still use Mico in Copilot Voice?
Microsoft’s current support guidance says Mico is moving out of Copilot Voice. Once an account receives the update, Copilot Voice continues to work, but Mico no longer appears there. Microsoft says the change began rolling out in waves in August 2026; the timing varies by account, with no single change date. The support FAQ says Mico continues in Learn Live and gives no further details about a return to Copilot Voice.

Microsoft says Mico continues in Learn Live, where it works as a tutor with real-time animation and voice. At launch, Microsoft described Learn Live as a voice-enabled Socratic tutor that guides learners through concepts using questions, visual cues, and interactive whiteboards. The current support guidance establishes that Mico remains in the Learn experience; it does not establish that the launch-era availability or rollout applies everywhere today.
