Microsoft’s student PC promotion has ended, and Apple’s $499 MacBook Neo education price is no longer the price shown on Apple’s latest US education list. As of October 4, 2026, Microsoft’s College Offer—which paired selected Windows 11 PCs with subscriptions and a controller—ended August 31. Apple’s September 9 US education list prices the base 13-inch MacBook Neo at $599. The $499 figures belong to the earlier promotional period, not confirmed current offers.
What was Microsoft’s College Offer?
Announced April 15, 2026, Microsoft’s College Offer bundled one year of Microsoft 365 Premium, one year of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, and a free customizable Xbox Wireless Controller with the purchase of a qualifying Windows 11 PC. The promotion ran through August 31, 2026, while eligible PCs lasted, so it is expired as of October 4, 2026.
Microsoft said eligible US college students needed to verify academic status with a college.edu email address, use a Microsoft account, and complete redemption steps after buying a qualifying PC. The subscriptions were for new subscribers, required a valid payment method, and auto-renewed; controller upgrades could cost extra. Microsoft described the bundle as having “more than $500 in added value.” That is the company’s promotional valuation, not a cash rebate or a guaranteed saving for every student. Microsoft’s offer announcement has the campaign details.
Which Windows laptops were in the promotion?
Microsoft’s announcement named several retailer price examples. These were limited-time offer-period prices, not verified prices today.

Is the MacBook Neo still $499 for education?
Not according to Apple’s latest US education institution price list available here. Apple’s March 4, 2026 launch announcement introduced the MacBook Neo at $599 in the US, or $499 for education. Apple’s later list, dated September 9, supersedes earlier lists and shows these prices:

- Compare actual checkout prices. Confirm the laptop’s current price, configuration, taxes, and any education eligibility requirements with the seller. Microsoft’s cited PC prices were promotion examples from 2026, not current quotes.
- Match configuration to coursework. Compare memory and storage, not just model names or headline prices. Apple’s listed base Neo has 8GB memory and a 256GB SSD; its $699 version has 512GB storage and Touch ID.
- Check required software and operating system. Confirm that your school’s applications, exams, peripherals, and class workflows support the laptop’s operating system. A low price is not useful if required software will not run properly.
- Value included services only if you will use them. Microsoft’s former bundle included subscriptions that auto-renewed and were limited to new subscribers. Their practical value depends on whether you qualify and want Microsoft 365 Premium and Game Pass Ultimate; Microsoft’s stated bundle value is not equivalent to money off the PC.
- Account for your existing ecosystem. Consider the devices, accounts, accessories, and software you already rely on, along with the support and setup requirements of your school.
Neither the Microsoft campaign announcement nor the cited Apple price list provides an independent head-to-head laptop test. Apple’s March launch release describes its own product and claims; those claims are not independent comparative testing.
