Microsoft’s “best of Xbox and Windows” vision became a controller-first gaming interface for Windows handhelds—not a Microsoft-built handheld announced in January 2025. ASUS later introduced the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X in partnership with Xbox, and Microsoft has since expanded the software direction toward Windows 11 PCs.
What Microsoft meant by “the best of Xbox and Windows”
At CES on January 8, 2025, Jason Ronald, Microsoft’s vice president of Next Generation, described work to bring Xbox console innovations to PC and handheld gaming and make Windows more gaming-focused. He told GameSpot: “I would say it’s bringing the best of Xbox and Windows together, because we have spent the last 20 years building a world-class operating system, but it’s really locked to the console.” GameSpot reported the remarks as a direction for Windows handhelds; they were not an announcement of a standalone Microsoft Xbox handheld.
How the idea became the ROG Xbox Ally line
ASUS announced the hardware in June 2025
ASUS announced the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X in June 2025, describing them as devices developed in partnership with Xbox. The pairing put Xbox’s controller-oriented software experience on ASUS Windows gaming PCs, rather than making the devices Microsoft-built consoles. ASUS’s announcement presented the line as combining a full-screen Xbox experience with Windows PC gaming.
The launch followed in October
On August 20, 2025, Xbox announced that the Ally models would launch on October 16 in an initial set of markets. Xbox described their full-screen experience as powered by Windows 11, with a controller-oriented interface and reduced background activity. Its launch announcement also described access to an aggregated library: Xbox games, Game Pass where available, installed games from Battle.net, and titles from other leading PC storefronts.

Xbox also listed native play, cloud play where available, and Remote Play from an Xbox console. These are announced capabilities, not a guarantee that every game works, that every storefront title is compatible, or that each service is offered in every region. Game Pass access depends on membership and market availability.
What Xbox mode does on a Windows handheld
The full-screen experience is a controller-navigable interface for finding and launching games without needing to use Windows primarily as a desktop. It brings supported Xbox access together with installed games from other PC storefronts, while the underlying device remains a Windows 11 PC. Xbox said the experience became generally available on Windows 11 handhelds in market on November 21, 2025. Xbox’s handheld update described navigation by controller and access to libraries across popular PC storefronts.

That aggregation is a convenience layer, not a promise of a single universal library entitlement: games still depend on the store or service that provides them, and compatibility and availability can differ by title and region.

Xbox mode is also expanding to Windows 11 PCs
On April 30, 2026, Xbox said the experience—then called Xbox mode, formerly the full-screen experience—began a gradual rollout to Windows 11 PCs in select markets. The announced features include controller-optimized browsing and launching, an aggregated library with Game Pass and installed titles from leading PC storefronts, and the ability to switch between Xbox mode and the Windows desktop. Xbox’s rollout announcement does not establish availability on every Windows 11 PC or in every market.

This is part of a broader platform direction, not evidence that all Windows devices now have identical gaming features. On March 11, 2026, Xbox described its work as bringing gaming operating-system work into Windows and making the experience more consistent across screens. That statement sets out the strategy; actual features and availability remain device- and rollout-dependent.

Xbox mode changes the interface and library presentation, but it does not by itself determine a handheld’s performance or suitability. Compare devices against the way you play:

- Operating system and storefronts: Check whether you want Windows desktop access and multiple PC storefronts, or a more closed, console-like environment.
- Game compatibility and controls: Confirm that the specific games you play run well and have usable controller support. Aggregating a library does not make every title compatible.
- Interface: Consider how easily you can browse, launch, and switch between games with a controller, and whether you need the Windows desktop.
- Performance and battery: Compare independent tests for the exact model and game settings you care about. Xbox’s interface announcements are not comparative hardware benchmarks.
- Portability and docking: Consider size, ergonomics, and whether you plan to connect an external display. Check dock compatibility for the specific device.
- Price and availability: Check current local listings; the announcements cited here do not establish current street prices or stock.
