Microsoft’s 2026 Copilot updates put AI assistance directly inside Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook. Depending on your app, account and license, Copilot can analyze data, change workbook elements, create or revise presentations, and draft or refine email. Availability is not universal: Microsoft uses different access rules for personal, work and school accounts, and organizations can restrict features.

What Microsoft Copilot can do inside Microsoft 365 apps

Copilot is integrated into the apps rather than offered only as a separate chatbot. Microsoft describes it as working alongside you to create, edit and refine existing files and messages while respecting existing permissions and sensitivity labels.

App Examples Microsoft describes Important qualification
Excel Explore data, build and explain analysis, and change formulas, tables and visuals in a workbook. AutoSave must be enabled and the workbook must be saved to OneDrive for Copilot in Excel.
PowerPoint Create presentations, update existing decks with current talking points and data, and refine slides to match an organization’s presentation style or template. Feature availability varies by account, license and rollout status.
Word Create, edit and refine documents, including work based on existing content. Access depends on the Microsoft 365 plan and, for work accounts, administrator settings.
Outlook Draft and refine email; Microsoft’s Wave 3 announcement also described Copilot working with Outlook content. Outlook capabilities and data scope continue to change in Microsoft’s release notes.

What changed in Microsoft’s 2026 announcements

March 9, 2026: Wave 3 rollout

Microsoft’s Wave 3 announcement said Excel and Word experiences were generally available at that point, while PowerPoint and Outlook were beginning rollout over the following months. It described Copilot creating, editing and refining content in documents, spreadsheets, presentations and email, including adding real formulas in spreadsheets and producing slides aligned with an organization’s presentation style.

That announcement is a dated rollout snapshot, not a guarantee that every account has the same features today. Microsoft also said files remain subject to existing permissions, sensitivity labels and tenant controls, with storage through OneDrive and SharePoint where applicable.

April 22, 2026: Agentic experiences described as generally available

In a later announcement, Microsoft said agentic capabilities in Word, Excel and PowerPoint were generally available and the default experience for Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers. Microsoft also said these capabilities were available to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family users.

For Excel, Microsoft specifically described exploring data, building and explaining analysis, and making direct changes to formulas, tables and visuals. For PowerPoint, it described creating polished presentations and updating existing decks with current talking points and data while respecting company templates.

What can Copilot do in Excel?

Excel’s Copilot functions are aimed at both understanding a workbook and modifying it. You can ask it to explore patterns in your data, explain an analysis, or help construct one. Microsoft also says it can make direct workbook changes, including edits to formulas, tables and visual elements.

Practical Excel workflow

  1. Open an eligible workbook in Excel and confirm that AutoSave is on.
  2. Save the workbook to OneDrive.
  3. Open Copilot in Excel and describe the analysis or change you need, such as identifying trends, explaining a result or revising a formula.
  4. Review every proposed formula, table change and visual before relying on the workbook.

Copilot’s presence does not remove the need to check source data, cell references, assumptions and calculated results. A response can be useful as a starting point even when the workbook still requires human validation.

How do you use Copilot in PowerPoint?

In PowerPoint, Copilot can help create a presentation from a request or revise an existing deck. Microsoft’s description includes updating slides with current talking points and data and keeping the result aligned with company templates.

Recommended presentation workflow

  1. Start in an eligible PowerPoint installation or open an existing presentation.
  2. Ask Copilot for a deck or for specific changes to the current presentation, providing the audience, purpose, length and source material.
  3. Check the generated outline before accepting a full set of slides.
  4. Verify figures, citations, speaker notes, images and template formatting manually.

Copilot can help with structure and wording, but it does not make business judgments for you. Confirm that every “current” talking point and data point is actually current for your organization.

What does Copilot do in Outlook?

Microsoft’s Wave 3 description includes drafting and refining Outlook email. This can help turn notes into a message, adjust tone or improve clarity. The exact Outlook experience depends on the account and app version, and Microsoft’s release notes continue to update how Outlook Chat accesses data.

Review recipients, attachments, quoted text and confidential information before sending. Copilot-generated wording should be treated as a draft, not as an automatic approval of the message’s facts or tone.

Is Copilot included with Microsoft 365?

There is no single yes-or-no answer. Microsoft Support distinguishes access by subscription, account type, license label and organization policy.

Account or plan situation What to expect
Personal Microsoft account Qualifying Personal, Family and Premium subscriptions can provide Copilot features, subject to Microsoft’s current eligibility rules.
Microsoft 365 Family Copilot AI benefits belong to the subscription owner. They are not automatically distributed to every family member.
Work or school account Access can depend on whether the organization assigns a Copilot add-on and which capabilities administrators permit.
Business or enterprise subscription Eligible subscriptions may qualify, but tenant configuration and assigned licensing can determine what appears in each app.

Microsoft’s support guidance also distinguishes basic chat access from app access with or without a Copilot add-on. Check the account’s actual license and the organization’s policies rather than relying on the name of the Microsoft 365 plan alone.

Does everyone on a Microsoft 365 Family plan get Copilot?

No. Microsoft says the subscription owner receives the relevant AI benefits; other people sharing the Family subscription do not automatically receive Copilot in desktop apps. Microsoft’s AI-credit guidance likewise says benefits are for the subscription owner and cannot be shared.

Why don’t I see Copilot in Excel or Outlook?

  • Your plan may not qualify: the feature may be excluded from the subscription or require a Copilot add-on.
  • You may be using the wrong account: verify that Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook is signed in with the account that owns the eligible subscription or has the assigned work license.
  • Your organization may restrict it: administrators can control app capabilities, data access and tenant settings.
  • Excel storage requirements may not be met: turn on AutoSave and save the workbook to OneDrive.
  • The feature may still be rolling out or changing: Microsoft’s release notes list ongoing changes, so an announcement does not guarantee identical availability in every region, app build or account.

Basic checks

  1. In the affected Microsoft 365 app, confirm you are signed in to the intended account.
  2. Check the subscription or license label associated with that account.
  3. Install available Microsoft 365 updates and restart the app.
  4. For Excel, enable AutoSave and open a workbook stored on OneDrive.
  5. If this is a work or school account, ask the administrator whether Copilot is licensed and enabled for your tenant.

Limits, privacy and review responsibilities

Microsoft says Copilot for Microsoft 365 enforces existing permissions and sensitivity labels. In organizations, files remain governed by tenant-level controls and storage policies. Those safeguards do not make generated content automatically correct or appropriate.

Usage limits can vary by plan, feature, entry point and system conditions, and Microsoft says they can change over time. Do not assume that an allowance shown for one plan applies to another.

Who is likely to benefit most?

  • Excel users: people who need help investigating a workbook, explaining analysis or making controlled formula, table and visual changes.
  • Presentation authors: teams that repeatedly create or update decks within a standard template.
  • Email-heavy workers: users who want help turning notes into clear Outlook drafts or adjusting tone.
  • Organizations with strict governance: teams that need Copilot to operate within existing permissions, labels and tenant controls.

The practical choice depends on the app you use, the task you want to delegate, your account type and the license actually assigned to you—not on the word “Copilot” alone.
