Microsoft’s February 7, 2023 announcement introduced an AI-powered Bing that combined ordinary web results with conversational answers and content creation. A redesigned Microsoft Edge added Chat for questions about the web and the current page, plus Compose for drafting text. Microsoft presented Bing as the search service supplying the AI experience and Edge as the browser that put those capabilities directly into the browsing workflow.
What Microsoft announced on February 7, 2023
The announcement described a search experience designed to do more than return ranked links. Bing could synthesize information into a conversational response, help users refine a question through follow-up prompts and assist with creating text. Microsoft said it had developed a proprietary search approach using OpenAI model technology, rather than simply placing a general-purpose chatbot beside a search box.
The same launch introduced a redesigned Edge, positioned as “your copilot for the web.” Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft corporate vice president and consumer chief marketing officer, summarized the browser update this way: “We’ve updated the Edge browser with new AI capabilities and a new look, and we’ve added two new functionalities: Chat and compose.”
How AI-assisted Bing differs from traditional search
| Aspect | Traditional search | Microsoft’s 2023 AI-assisted approach |
|---|---|---|
| Answer format | Ranked links, snippets and conventional result features. | Conversationally synthesized answers alongside links, with follow-up interaction. |
| Workflow context | Primarily a standalone search page where the user opens separate results. | Search assistance connected to the Edge browser, including the page currently being viewed. |
| Extensibility | Search features largely supplied by the service itself. | Microsoft’s follow-up described broader platform capabilities for developer and third-party actions. |
This does not make conventional results obsolete. Links remain important for checking sources, exploring alternatives and handling questions where a synthesized response could omit context. The change is that Bing attempted to place a generated explanation and an interactive next step before, or alongside, the list of pages.

What Bing Chat was intended to do
Ask questions in a search conversation
Bing’s chat experience was meant for natural-language questions rather than only short keyword queries. A user could ask for an explanation, request a refinement or continue with a related question without rebuilding the entire search from scratch. The service was still tied to web search, so the practical value depended on the quality, freshness and scope of the information it retrieved.
Combine answers with web discovery
The launch positioned conversational output and search results as complementary. A generated answer could provide a starting synthesis, while the linked results offered material to inspect directly. For consequential claims, readers should treat the answer as a convenience layer and verify details in the underlying pages.

How Bing Chat and Compose worked in Edge
Chat: assistance with the web and the current page
Edge’s Chat function was described as a browser-integrated way to ask about the web and page context. That distinction matters: the feature was not merely a separate chatbot tab. It was designed to help a reader understand or interrogate the page open in Edge, then continue into broader web questions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCompose: drafting rather than publishing automatically
Compose was the second named Edge function. It helped generate draft text, making it useful for tasks such as turning notes into a message or adjusting wording. Drafting assistance still requires human review for accuracy, tone, citations, privacy and confidential information; the announcement did not promise that generated copy would be publication-ready without editing.

What Microsoft added after the initial launch
May 4, 2023: a broader Bing and Edge platform
Microsoft’s May 4 follow-up described the next stage of the product. It highlighted more visual answers, persistent chat history and context that could carry across multiple sessions. The company also described broader platform capabilities intended to let developers and third parties build actions on top of search experiences.
These additions moved the concept beyond a single question-and-answer screen. Visual responses could make certain topics easier to scan, persistent history could reduce the need to repeat background, and actions could connect conversational search to tasks supplied by other services. The announcement described the direction and capabilities; availability and exact feature behavior were subject to change.

Mobile apps and Skype distribution
A Windows Experience Blog rollout note dated February 28, 2023 said the new Bing preview had reached more than 1 million people in 169 countries. That was a time-bound preview figure reported by Microsoft, not a current user count. The same note said Microsoft had expanded the experience to Bing and Edge mobile apps and introduced it in Skype.
Is AI Bing an alternative to Google Search?
It can be an alternative search service, but the meaningful difference is workflow rather than a guarantee that every answer is better. Bing’s 2023 strategy emphasized conversational synthesis, browser-aware help and creation tools. Someone who prefers direct links, established ranking controls or a particular ecosystem may still favor another search engine; someone who wants an answer shaped through follow-up questions may find Bing’s model more useful.
- Choose conventional search behavior when you need to compare many original sources, inspect specialized results or avoid generated interpretation.
- Use conversational search when you need a quick explanation, a structured starting point or iterative question refinement.
- Use Edge’s browser tools when the task is tied to the page you are reading or involves drafting text from a prompt.
In practice, these modes can be combined: ask for an orientation, then open and evaluate the cited pages yourself.
Important limitations and changing terminology
- The launch and rollout details describe Microsoft’s products in 2023. Feature names, interfaces, access rules and branding may have changed since those announcements.
- The “more than 1 million people in 169 countries” figure applies to the preview reported on February 28, 2023; it should not be presented as a present-day adoption statistic.
- Conversational synthesis can leave out qualifications or reproduce errors. For medical, legal, financial, safety-critical or otherwise consequential decisions, consult authoritative sources and qualified professionals.
- Page-aware assistance can expose sensitive material to an AI service. Review what content you submit and follow your organization’s privacy and data-handling requirements.
What the 2023 strategy signaled
Microsoft was trying to make search an active assistant rather than a directory of pages. Bing supplied the AI-oriented search experience; Edge embedded related help in the browser; later updates added visual responses, persistent context, mobile distribution and an opening for third-party actions. The result was a product direction in which finding information, understanding it and producing a next piece of work were treated as parts of one flow.
