Microsoft says AI is helping scammers create convincing shopping sites, job offers and fraud messages with less effort—but its figures describe activity Microsoft says it blocked, not the scale of online scams worldwide. The practical response is to verify merchants, employers and support contacts through channels you find independently, and never let urgency substitute for that check.
What Microsoft reported—and what its figures mean
In Cyber Signals Issue 9: AI-powered deception: Emerging fraud threats and countermeasures, published April 16, 2025, Microsoft Security Team described how AI can make fraud content faster and easier to produce. Microsoft said that from April 2024 through April 2025 it thwarted $4 billion in fraud attempts, rejected 49,000 fraudulent partnership enrollments and blocked about 1.6 million bot signup attempts per hour.
Those are Microsoft-reported operational figures. They are not confirmed victim losses, a count of unique criminals, or an estimate of all fraud worldwide. The report does not establish what share of scams globally involve AI.

The central warning is about the lower effort required to produce plausible-looking material. A polished page, fluent message or convincing profile is easier to create than it used to be; appearance alone is therefore weak evidence that a business or opportunity is genuine.

Where AI can make fraud more convincing

How to check an online shop before paying
- Inspect the actual domain. Do not rely on a familiar logo, store name or a link in an unsolicited message. Look for misspellings or a domain that does not match the merchant’s independently located official site.
- Check the merchant independently. Search for the business using a separate route and compare its official contact details and policies. Reviews, endorsements and a polished storefront can be fabricated.
- Treat pressure as a warning sign. Countdown timers, claims that an offer will vanish immediately, and other urgency cues should not rush you past verification.
- Be cautious about payment methods. Microsoft advises care when a seller demands direct bank transfer or cryptocurrency, which do not offer the same fraud protections as other payment methods.
- Do not treat chat support as proof. A responsive chatbot or detailed product description does not establish that the seller is legitimate.
How to verify a job offer or recruiter
- Find the employer’s official website independently and confirm that the job appears there or through a hiring channel the company identifies.
- Contact the company using a phone number or email address published on that official site—not contact details supplied only by the recruiter.
- Be wary of unsolicited text offers, interviews conducted only through informal channels, or unusually high pay for minimal qualifications.
- Do not pay to secure a job, and do not provide bank details, passwords or sensitive identity information to an unverified contact.
- If an interview looks synthetic or otherwise unusual, treat that as a reason to verify the person through the employer’s official channels, not as a reliable visual test for a deepfake.
How to handle an unexpected tech-support contact
Do not grant remote access to a caller or message sender you have not verified. Contact the organization through a number or support route you already trust, rather than using details provided during an unsolicited interaction.
Microsoft’s Storm-1811 example is a useful distinction: beginning in mid-April 2024, attackers posed as IT support and used voice phishing and social engineering to persuade victims to grant access through Windows Quick Assist. Microsoft said it did not observe AI in those attacks and said neither Quick Assist nor Microsoft was compromised in the scenarios described. The incident shows how ordinary impersonation can exploit trust; it is not evidence that the specific activity was AI-enabled.

For workplaces, Microsoft recommends directing employees to approved support channels and applying least-privilege practices. Microsoft describes Remote Help as an alternative for internal assistance within an organization. These are vendor recommendations, not an independent comparison of support tools. If someone is impersonating Microsoft, Microsoft identifies its scam-reporting page as a reporting route.
What Microsoft’s security features can—and cannot—do
Microsoft describes Edge typo protection and domain impersonation protection, a machine-learning Scareware Blocker, Defender SmartScreen, Quick Assist safeguards and fraud detection in Microsoft services. It also says it uses machine-learning systems to identify patterns and that its Digital Crimes Unit works with public and private partners to disrupt malicious infrastructure.

A browser warning or security product can support safer decisions, but it cannot establish that every unflagged site, caller or offer is trustworthy.
