If your Microsoft verification text is missing, first check that the phone can receive messages from unknown senders and that Microsoft is sending the code to the correct number. Then try another verification method if one is offered. Repeatedly requesting codes can trigger a temporary block; a missing SMS does not by itself mean Windows is broken.
First, identify which account is asking for a code
Microsoft account verification can appear while you sign in to Windows or another Microsoft service. A personal Microsoft account and an organization-managed work or school account may offer different verification methods and recovery steps. If your organization manages the account, its sign-in policies may apply.
For a Windows 10 or Windows 11 sign-in problem, Microsoft directs users with missing verification codes to its verification-code troubleshooting guidance and the Microsoft account sign-in helper. The SMS issue is an account or phone-delivery problem unless other evidence points to a Windows device issue.

Check the number and your phone’s message handling
- Compare the masked number. Microsoft shows only part of the destination number during sign-in. Check that its last two digits match the current phone number you expect. Microsoft says it sends texts to the account’s primary phone number.
- Allow messages from unknown senders. Check blocked-message, spam, or filtering settings that might hide texts from numbers not in your contacts.
- Make room in the inbox. A full message inbox can prevent new texts from arriving.
- Check the messaging app and service. Confirm the app is working and that the phone can receive other text messages.
- Confirm the number is eligible. Microsoft does not accept VoIP numbers for sign-in verification.
Microsoft lists regional SMS limitations and temporary service availability as other possible causes. A code may also be delayed or withheld when unusual sign-in activity or repeated requests trigger account protection. These causes do not establish that your Windows installation is damaged.

Stop requesting codes repeatedly
Do not keep pressing “send a code” or repeatedly request one through different contact methods. Microsoft warns that excessive or repetitive requests to alternative emails or phone numbers can lead it to block further verification codes. Repeated attempts may also reset a temporary time lock.
- Use an offered alternative first. Select another verification method shown on the sign-in screen, such as an available email address or authenticator app.
- If a temporary block seems likely, try another network and wait. Avoid making more code requests while waiting.
- If there is no change after 24 hours, wait longer. Microsoft’s guidance says to wait as long as possible, up to a week, and use the sign-in helper for continuing access problems.
- Use Microsoft’s sign-in helper. It can direct you through account-specific troubleshooting when the usual method is not working.
Microsoft’s verification-code guidance specifically cautions against excessive or repetitive requests because they can cause codes to be blocked.

Choose a verification method your account actually offers
Available methods vary by account. The sign-in screen and the account’s Security settings are the best places to see what you can use now. Microsoft documents email, Microsoft Authenticator, and passkeys among possible options; a method may not be available during every sign-in or lockout.

Microsoft’s security-info guidance says an account can have up to 10 different ways to verify sign-in. This is a maximum, not a promise that every type of method is available for every account. Check Microsoft’s instructions for adding a verification method for the options shown in your account.

Recover access without losing working security methods
If you can sign in using another method, add and verify a replacement before removing a phone number or other method you can no longer access. Avoid replacing all security information at once if you can keep one existing method available.
If every security method is unavailable and you replace all of the account’s security information, Microsoft says the change can require a 30-day wait before you can sign in. If you also do not know the password, follow Microsoft’s account recovery process; its troubleshooting guidance points users to the recovery form.

Handle unexpected verification codes safely
If a code arrives that you did not request, do not share it or reply to the message. Microsoft says an unsolicited code can mean someone tried to access the account, someone entered the wrong contact information, or a code requested earlier was delayed. If a text’s authenticity is uncertain, do not click its link; go to the account site directly.

After sign-in, add a backup method
Once you regain access, open your Microsoft account’s Security settings and add another method you can use, if your account permits it. Complete the verification for the new method before relying on it. Microsoft’s available choices vary; an authenticator app or passkey may be offered even when adding a phone number is not.
