Microsoft Teams for Education and Google Classroom both handle assignments, submissions, grading, and feedback. The key difference is how they organize classwork: Teams combines conversations, files, and teaching tools in a class workspace, while Classroom centers the experience on classes, classwork, and connected Google Workspace services. The better fit depends on your school’s existing software, preferred teaching workflow, required features, licensing, and administrator policies—not a universal winner.

How the two platforms organize a class

Teams: a continuing class workspace

Teams organizes teaching around class teams and channels. A class team can bring together announcements and upcoming work, Class Notebook, Assignments, Grades, Reflect check-ins, and Insights. Channels group conversations, files, and apps around a topic or project. This model suits teachers who want discussion and class materials to remain alongside assignment work in an ongoing shared space. Microsoft describes Teams for Education as a collaboration app with chat, video collaboration, assignments, class materials, and notes; its class-team guide explains the available class tools and channels.

Google Classroom: classwork at the center

Classroom organizes work within classes, with Classwork and Materials, assignments, and posts that teachers can group under topics. Its structure is a natural fit for teachers who want a focused surface for distributing, collecting, and returning classwork. Google’s student guide describes the class and classwork experience. Decide whether teachers need a persistent, channel-based discussion space or primarily an assignment-centered class page.

Assignments, grading, and feedback

Both services support the basic assignment cycle: teachers provide work, students submit it, and teachers grade and return it with feedback. Teams lets educators set tasks, work, or quizzes; manage instructions and timelines; add resources; use rubrics; and track class and individual progress in Grades. Microsoft notes that student assignment files are stored in class-team SharePoint libraries, a detail administrators should account for in permissions, retention, discovery, and migration planning. See Microsoft’s assignment guide.

Google documents assignment creation and scheduling, attachments, due dates, rubrics, learning goals, assignment to a whole class or selected students, collection, grading, and return of work. Its grading tools include personalized comments, reusable comment banks, and audio, video, or screencast feedback. Google lists support for Docs, Sheets, Slides, Microsoft Office files, PDFs, images, text files, and common audio and video formats. That can help in mixed-document environments, but schools should still test their own file permissions and workflows. Details appear in Google’s assignment guide and grading guide.

Documents and the school’s existing software

Classroom’s grading documentation explicitly lists Google and Microsoft Office formats, so a school should not assume all student work must start as a Google file. Teams operates within Microsoft’s collaboration environment; class and student assignment files use SharePoint libraries. In either platform, test the full workflow with representative accounts: attaching a file, opening it as a student, submitting a copy, providing feedback, and confirming who can access the result.

The existing school suite matters as much as the feature list. If teachers and students already work in Microsoft’s environment, Teams may keep discussion, files, and assignments together. If the school already relies on Google Workspace and teachers prefer Classroom’s classwork organization, Classroom may fit more naturally. Check account access, integrations, file ownership, and migration requirements before selecting one.

Analytics: compare the signals and licenses

Teams lists Insights for student progress and engagement. Microsoft’s documentation describes signals that include attendance and Reading Progress metrics. Google Classroom analytics is edition-dependent: Google documents analytics for education leaders and support staff with Standard and Plus, and teacher analytics with Plus or Teaching and Learning Upgrade. Classroom analytics reflects activity in Classroom, not data held outside it such as student-information-system records; analytics may also be unavailable for archived classes. See Microsoft’s Insights documentation and Google’s analytics overview.

These are not interchangeable analytics checkboxes. Identify which roles need access, which signals matter, what data is outside the platform, and which license covers the feature. Then compare those requirements with the school’s governance and reporting needs.

Originality reports and academic integrity

Google documents originality reports for Google Docs, Slides, or Word files. Reports compare submissions with public web sources and books and can flag passages that may need citation. Google Education Fundamentals allows five reports per class; Teaching and Learning Upgrade or Education Plus provides unlimited reports. Google says reports are available for 45 days. Checking against past submissions from the school is optional: it requires an eligible edition or add-on, administrator configuration, and a school-owned collection of prior work. Review Google’s current originality report guidance and school matches guidance when licensing this feature.

The cited Teams documentation does not establish a directly equivalent feature, so schools that need originality checking should evaluate the tools and policies available in their own environment rather than infer that either platform covers every integrity need.

Eligibility, editions, and cost

Microsoft says an eligible user with a valid, active institutional email address can access the free version of Teams for Education. That is not the same as universal free access: eligibility applies, and an institution already using Office 365 for Education may need an administrator to enable Teams. Microsoft directs institutions to its education suite for broader access. Check the Teams for Education access information with the school’s administrator.

Google distinguishes personal accounts from school Google Workspace for Education accounts, and Classroom features such as analytics and originality reports can depend on the school’s edition or add-on. Google explains account types in its school-account guidance. There is no single apples-to-apples price comparison here: cost and access depend on the school’s existing agreements, eligibility, region, and required features. Ask administrators to confirm current entitlements and pricing for the specific institution.

Privacy, safety, and administration

Neither product’s general feature description settles whether a particular school’s deployment meets its legal or policy requirements. Microsoft’s deployment guidance says institutions may need to adjust default collaboration settings to balance collaboration with student safety and privacy, and recommends organization-wide student policies. Review the school’s own configuration using Microsoft’s education deployment guidance.

Google says it processes some Classroom content to provide features such as originality reports and improve the service, and that data from Workspace for Education core services is not used for advertising. Google also says Classroom has no ads and that it does not assume ownership of Workspace for Education core-service data. These are Google’s stated product and privacy positions; they do not by themselves assess third-party integrations or a school’s specific deployment. See Google’s privacy and security information and Classroom FAQ.

Before choosing, administrators should review the school’s contracts, tenant settings, enabled integrations, data retention, access controls, applicable laws, and the policies teachers and students will actually use.

A practical way to choose

  1. Start with the school’s suite and accounts. Confirm which platform is already licensed, whether the relevant accounts are eligible, and which features administrators have enabled.
  2. Map teachers’ daily workflow. Decide whether class discussion and files should live in topic-based channels alongside assignments, or whether a classwork-centered structure better matches how teachers distribute and collect work.
  3. Test a complete assignment. Use teacher and student accounts to create work, attach a file, submit it, grade it, return feedback, and check file access and ownership.
  4. List must-have extras. Specify the analytics audiences and signals, originality-checking needs, feedback formats, and document types. Confirm the license and setup for each requirement.
  5. Review administration before rollout. Check privacy terms, policies, retention, integrations, and student-safety settings with the institution’s administrators.
  6. Verify regional terms and access. Ask the school to confirm current pricing, eligibility, and edition entitlements rather than relying on a generic free-or-paid label.
