Microsoft’s Copilot terms effective August 18, 2026 still say the service is “for entertainment purposes only,” despite the company saying in April that the wording was outdated and would change in a future update. The personal-use terms also say Copilot can make mistakes and advise against relying on it for important advice. Whether those terms apply to you depends on the account and Copilot product you use.
What Microsoft’s current Copilot terms say
The Microsoft Copilot Supplemental Terms of Use, effective August 18, 2026, cover the Copilot app and linked Copilot experiences for individual use. They warn that Copilot may make mistakes or fail to work as intended, tell users not to rely on it for important advice, and retain the sentence that the service is for “entertainment purposes only.”
That wording is a disclaimer in the terms; it does not, by itself, explain how Microsoft evaluates any particular use of Copilot. The practical guidance in the same terms is clearer: check important information rather than treating Copilot’s answers as authoritative advice.
Why Microsoft said the wording would change
On April 7, 2026, ITPro reported that a Microsoft spokesperson described the sentence as legacy wording from when Copilot launched as a search companion in Bing. The spokesperson said: “As the product has evolved, that language is no longer reflective of how Copilot is used today and will be altered with our next update.” The report did not identify the spokesperson by name or role. ITPro’s report records the company’s statement, not a change to the terms themselves.

The later terms page, with an effective date of August 18, 2026, still contains the entertainment-purpose language. So the statement of planned change should not be read as confirmation that the disclaimer has been removed.
Which terms apply to a work or school Copilot account?
The individual-use terms explicitly exclude people signed in with a work, school, or organizational Microsoft Entra account. Business Copilot offerings are governed under separate licensing documents, so the right terms depend on the particular product and organization.

| How you use Copilot | Terms guidance |
|---|---|
| Copilot app or linked experience for individual use | The individual-use Supplemental Terms apply, subject to their stated scope and exclusions. They retain the entertainment-purpose wording. Microsoft terms |
| Signed in with a work, school, or organizational Entra account | Excluded from the individual-use terms; check the agreement and product documents that govern your organization’s Copilot offering. Microsoft terms |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot or another listed business GenAI product | Microsoft says applicable licensing agreements, Product Terms, the Data Protection Addendum, and any applicable service-level agreements govern. Which documents apply depends on the offering. Microsoft Licensing FAQ |
If you are unsure which category applies, check the account you are signed into and the specific Copilot product your employer or school provides. A work or school account is not covered by the individual-use terms simply because the interface looks like the consumer Copilot app.

Microsoft says it generally posts updated terms at least 30 days before they take effect, except in rare circumstances requiring an immediate update. It also says the effective date appears at the top of the terms page. Check the current terms page and, for prior versions, Microsoft’s Copilot Terms of Use archives.
