Microsoft did not ultimately raise US Xbox Live Gold prices in January 2021. It announced higher rates on January 22, faced immediate backlash from players, and withdrew the proposal later that same day—less than 24 hours after announcing it. The company also said free-to-play games would no longer require Gold for online multiplayer, although that change was scheduled for the following months rather than taking effect immediately.
What Microsoft originally announced
On January 22, 2021, Microsoft announced higher Xbox Live Gold prices for new customers in the United States. The proposed rates were:
| # | Preview | Product | Price | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 |
|
$100 XBOX Gift Card [Digital Code] | $100.00 | Buy on Amazon |
| 2 |
|
$10 XBOX Gift Card [Digital Code] | $10.00 | Buy on Amazon |
| 3 |
|
$50 XBOX Gift Card [Digital Code] | $50.00 | Buy on Amazon |
| 4 |
|
$25 XBOX Gift Card [Digital Code] | $25.00 | Buy on Amazon |
| 5 |
|
Xbox Physical Gift Card | $25.00 | Buy on Amazon |
| Subscription term | Existing reported price | Proposed price | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| One month | $10 | $11 | +$1 |
| Three months | $25 | $30 | +$5 |
| Six months | $40 | $60 | +$20 |
These were announced prices for new US customers, not prices that subscribers were ultimately charged. The six-month figure in the contemporaneous TechCrunch report applied to new customers.

Players reacted negatively to the proposed increases, particularly because Gold was still required for online multiplayer in many paid games and the announcement came without a corresponding improvement that users could immediately access. The available reporting documents the backlash qualitatively; it does not establish a verified complaint count, survey result, or a measurable share of players responsible for the reversal.

Microsoft withdrew the proposal later on January 22. In a statement posted on Xbox’s blog and quoted by TechCrunch, the company acknowledged that it had misjudged player expectations:
“We messed up today and you were right to let us know. Connecting and playing with friends is a vital part of gaming and we failed to meet the expectations of players who count on it every day. As a result, we have decided not to change Xbox Live Gold pricing.”

The statement is Microsoft’s explanation for the U-turn. It confirms that the company treated the player response as evidence that the proposed change was unacceptable, but it does not quantify how much any particular social network, petition, or group influenced the decision.
Did Xbox Live Gold actually become more expensive?
No. Microsoft reversed the announcement before the new rates took effect. The $11 monthly, $30 three-month, and $60 six-month amounts should therefore be described as proposed 2021 US prices, not as prices that were implemented.

What changed for free-to-play games
Alongside the reversal, Microsoft announced that Xbox players would no longer need an Xbox Live Gold subscription to play free-to-play games online. The company said it was working to deliver that change in the coming months.
That timetable matters: the free-to-play requirement was a separate policy change announced during the reversal, not a benefit that became available on the same day. The January 22 statement committed Microsoft to removing the requirement but did not present the change as immediately active.

Separate proposed prices from charged prices
News stories and archived posts may list the $11, $30, and $60 figures because they were part of Microsoft’s initial announcement. They should not be used to calculate what Xbox users paid after the U-turn.

Separate the reversal from later Xbox branding
Xbox’s current product page identifies Xbox Live Gold as Xbox Game Pass Core. That is a subsequent naming and product change, not part of Microsoft’s January 2021 decision. The current page describes online console multiplayer and access to a selection of console games as membership benefits.
