Microsoft announced on November 20, 2025, that Zork I, Zork II, and Zork III source repositories were released under the MIT License. The release makes the game code available for study and modification; it does not include every asset or grant rights to the games’ brands.

What Microsoft released

Microsoft’s Open Source Programs Office, Team Xbox, and Activision announced the three releases on November 20, 2025. The work added licensing and documentation to historical repositories through upstream pull requests. It is a source-code preservation effort, not a re-release of all the commercial materials associated with the games.

Microsoft described its aim as putting historically important code in the hands of students, teachers, and developers so they could study it, learn from it, and play it. The stated goal is preservation and exploration rather than modernizing Zork.

What the MIT License lets you do—and what it does not

The released source code is under the MIT License, a permissive license that generally allows users to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and sell copies of the licensed code, subject to the license’s conditions. When redistributing code, preserve the applicable copyright and permission notices and include the license text.

The grant applies to the licensed code in the repositories, not automatically to everything associated with the commercial games. Microsoft says the release excludes commercial packaging and marketing materials, and does not grant rights to trademarks or brands, which remain with their respective owners. Do not treat permission to modify or redistribute source code as permission to use logos, product branding, box art, or other excluded materials.

Why Zork became three games

Microsoft’s account is that the original mainframe Zork was too large for early home computers, so Infocom divided it into three titles. The Z-Machine helped make that split workable: it provided a common story format that could run on multiple platforms, rather than requiring the same game to be rebuilt from scratch for each one.

Back to the Future: The Game - 30th Anniversary Edition - Xbox One
  • Created in collaboration with movie trilogy co-writer and producer Bob Gale
  • Features original movie cast members Christopher Lloyd ('Doc' Brown), Tom Wilson (Biff Tannen), Claudia Wells (Jennifer Parker), and in special cameo appearances, Michael J. Fox as McFlys of the past. And the future!
  • Includes in-game access to exclusive content: a behind the scenes video featuring interviews with Bob Gale, Tom Wilson, members of the development team, and AJ LoCascio - the voice of young Marty McFly
  • Your choices and actions change to story around you
  • A classic Telltale game that lead to their breakout hits The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, Game of Thrones, and Tales from the Borderlands

The trilogy’s division was therefore both a practical response to home-computer limits and part of a portable software approach. It should not be confused with the separate archival question of where the earliest source came from.

Is the original Zork code from MIT?

A separate historical-source repository identifies its 1977 Zork material as coming from MIT’s Tapes of Tech Square collection. It describes the code as largely written in MDL for a PDP-10 running ITS and names Tim Anderson, Marc Blank, Bruce Daniels, and Dave Lebling as creators.

That provenance describes an early mainframe version, not the entirety of the later commercial trilogy. The MIT connection is to the archive that preserved the historical source; it does not mean MIT authored or owns every later Zork game or every asset now associated with the franchise.

Ways to play or work with Zork today

Route Best suited to What you need to do What it provides
The Zork Anthology on GOG Casual play and a ready-made commercial option Obtain and run the anthology through GOG; check its current availability for your region and platform. A commercial anthology, rather than a workflow for compiling the newly released source.
Released source with ZILF and a Z-machine runner Study, classroom use, development, or hands-on preservation work Use ZILF to compile the source, then run the resulting story file with a compatible Z-machine interpreter. A source-based route that involves compilation and a separate runner; it is not the same as installing a ready-to-play anthology.

Microsoft points to The Zork Anthology on GOG as a way to play and to ZILF plus Z-machine runners for compiling and running the source locally. It says the games remain playable more than forty years after their creation. The two routes serve different needs: the anthology is the simpler play option, while the source route makes the underlying code the subject of study or modification.
