Microsoft 365 is the subscription for continuously updated Office apps, multi-device use and cloud services. Office Home 2024 is a one-time purchase for classic desktop apps on one computer. Office LTSC 2024 is a volume-licensed, fixed-feature edition for organizations that need tightly controlled or disconnected deployments. The right choice depends less on the app names than on how you license users or devices, whether you need cloud services, and how often your software can change.
This guide explains what each model includes, how offline use and updates work, and which license fits common home, small-business, regulated and specialist scenarios.
The three Office licensing models at a glance
| Area | Microsoft 365 | Office 2024 | Office LTSC 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payment | Recurring subscription | One-time purchase | One-time commercial volume-license purchase |
| License unit | User-based; the licensed user can install on multiple devices within plan limits | Product license for one PC or Mac | Generally device-based; normally one licensed device |
| Applications | Latest versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook and, where the plan includes them, other apps such as Access | Home 2024: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote; Home & Business 2024 also includes Outlook | Classic Office applications selected for the LTSC release |
| Feature updates | Continuous current releases and new features | Fixed 2024 release | Fixed release after launch; security and quality updates, but no new features |
| Cloud services | Services depend on the plan and can include OneDrive storage, web apps, support and collaboration services | Not included | Not included as a suite entitlement |
| Typical audience | Individuals and organizations that want current apps, collaboration and cloud integration | Home, student and small-business users who want classic apps without a subscription | Organizations with regulatory, operational, deployment-control or connectivity constraints |
| Upgrade path | New versions are included while the subscription remains active | Buy a later major release separately | Plan and purchase a later LTSC release when one is available |
The table describes the licensing models, not a universal feature list for every Microsoft 365 plan. Check the specific plan before assuming that an app, storage allowance or service is included.

A subscription tied to a person
Microsoft 365 uses user-based licensing. A licensed user can install the desktop apps on multiple PCs, Macs, tablets and phones within the limits of that plan. This is different from a license permanently attached to one computer: the user, rather than a single device, is the central licensing unit.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Current apps and continuing changes
The subscription keeps Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook on the current release channel offered by the plan. Microsoft delivers feature updates as well as security and quality fixes, so the interface and capabilities can change during the life of the subscription. For organizations, Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise is designed around current desktop applications plus cloud-backed collaboration, security and compliance capabilities.
Cloud services are part of the value
Depending on the plan, Microsoft 365 can include OneDrive storage, web versions of the apps, support and other online services. In organizational plans, related services may include cloud collaboration and management capabilities. These services are separate from merely owning a copy of Word or Excel, and they are not supplied by a one-time Office 2024 license.
Internet requirements
Microsoft 365 needs an internet connection for initial activation and for periodic license checks. After activation, the desktop apps can be used without a continuous connection, but a device must reconnect as required by the subscription. Cloud features, web apps, online storage and real-time collaboration naturally require internet access.

What a one-time Office 2024 purchase means
Office Home 2024
Office Home 2024 provides the classic versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote for one PC or Mac. You pay once for that release rather than paying a recurring subscription. The apps remain the 2024 release; they do not turn into the next major edition when Microsoft later ships one.

Office Home & Business 2024
Home & Business 2024 adds Outlook for home or small-business use to the core Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote set. The same one-device and fixed-release principles apply.
What “perpetual” does and does not mean
A perpetual-style license means you retain the right to use the purchased release instead of renewing a subscription. It does not mean that every future Office feature is included, that the license can be installed on unlimited devices, or that cloud services come with it. Microsoft states that there is no upgrade option for these one-time purchases: moving to a later major release requires buying that release separately.
Services that are not included
Office 2024 is an app license, not a Microsoft 365 service bundle. It does not include Microsoft 365 cloud services such as Exchange Online, SharePoint Online or OneDrive storage. You can use other accounts or services separately, but they are not entitlements created by the Office 2024 purchase.
What Office LTSC 2024 is
Designed for controlled environments
Office LTSC 2024 (Long-Term Servicing Channel) is Microsoft’s current on-premises commercial release for organizations using volume licensing. Microsoft positions it for highly regulated or restricted environments that cannot accept feature updates. Examples include process-control and specialty systems, locked-down workstations and some networks that are disconnected from the public internet.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Fixed features, managed maintenance
LTSC starts with a defined feature set and stays on that release. It receives security and quality updates, but no new features after launch. That predictability lets an IT team validate a configuration once, control when packages are deployed and avoid an unexpected interface or behavior change in a production system.
Volume activation and device licensing
LTSC is obtained through commercial volume licensing rather than the normal consumer checkout used for Office Home 2024. Licensing is generally device-based, so an organization must account for each licensed installation or workstation. Deployment and activation are managed centrally using the organization’s volume-licensing arrangements. A reseller or licensing specialist should confirm eligibility, channel and activation method before a purchase.
Offline and disconnected operation
LTSC can fit a disconnected deployment because updates can be staged and managed on-premises instead of relying on a continuously connected subscription service. “Offline” does not remove the need for an organization’s own activation, patching, security and audit procedures; it means the product is suitable for environments where direct internet access is restricted or unavailable.

How the models differ in day-to-day use
Updates and change management
- Microsoft 365: current features arrive continuously. Use the organization’s update channels and testing rings if a change must be validated before broad deployment.
- Office 2024: the purchased release is fixed. Security and servicing behavior should be checked against Microsoft’s support information, but a future major release is a separate purchase.
- LTSC 2024: the feature set is fixed after launch, with security and quality updates rather than feature additions. This is useful where software changes require formal validation.
Working across devices
Microsoft 365 is the natural fit when one person moves between a work PC, home computer, phone and tablet, subject to the plan’s device limits. Office Home 2024 is licensed for one PC or Mac, so a household or small office with several computers must account for separate licenses. LTSC normally follows the licensed device, not an employee who moves between machines.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Collaboration and storage
Microsoft 365 can combine desktop apps with web apps, OneDrive storage and plan-dependent collaboration services. Office 2024 and LTSC supply the installed applications but do not include Microsoft 365 cloud storage or online service entitlements. An organization can buy separate cloud services, but that is an additional licensing decision.
Choose the right license: a practical decision process
- List the people and devices. Count users who need Office and the PCs, Macs, tablets and phones they use. A single user on several devices points toward user-based Microsoft 365 licensing; a dedicated workstation points toward a device-based purchase.
- Identify required applications. Decide whether Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote are enough or whether Outlook is required. Office Home 2024 does not include Outlook; Home & Business 2024 does.
- Separate app needs from service needs. If you need OneDrive storage, web apps, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online or integrated collaboration, a one-time Office purchase alone will not provide them.
- Set the update policy. Choose Microsoft 365 if current features are important and your environment can test and absorb ongoing changes. Choose a fixed release when a validated feature set must remain stable.
- Check connectivity and controls. Microsoft 365 requires internet for initial activation and periodic checks. If direct connectivity is restricted, evaluate whether a managed LTSC deployment meets the operational and regulatory requirements.
- Confirm the purchasing channel. Consumers and small businesses can evaluate Office Home 2024 or Home & Business 2024. LTSC requires commercial volume licensing, so verify eligibility and activation details with Microsoft or an authorized licensing provider.
- Compare the complete cost. For Microsoft 365, include recurring subscription payments and any separate service plans. For Office 2024, include the possibility of buying each future major release. For LTSC, include volume licensing, deployment, testing and on-premises update management.
Common scenarios
One home computer and no cloud requirement
Office Home 2024 is usually the straightforward choice when one person needs classic Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote on one PC or Mac and wants to avoid a recurring subscription. Do not select it expecting OneDrive storage or the next Office release to arrive automatically.
Several devices used by one person
Microsoft 365 is better aligned with a user who works across multiple computers and mobile devices, provided the selected plan’s installation limits and services meet the need.

Compare Home & Business 2024 if the requirement is a fixed set of desktop apps on one computer and no bundled cloud services. If the business needs hosted mail, shared files, web apps or several devices per employee, evaluate an appropriate Microsoft 365 business plan instead.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Regulated or specialist workstation
LTSC is intended for this type of environment when feature changes are unacceptable, deployment must be centrally controlled, or the network is restricted. It is not simply a cheaper consumer edition and should not be purchased without confirming volume-license eligibility.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Confusing one-time payment with lifetime upgrades: Office 2024 covers the purchased release; a later major version is a new purchase.
- Assuming “Office” includes cloud services: Exchange Online, SharePoint Online and OneDrive storage are not included with one-time Office 2024 or LTSC suite entitlements.
- Using LTSC as a general consumer license: LTSC is a commercial volume-licensing product for controlled environments, not the normal retail path.
- Ignoring the license unit: A Microsoft 365 user license and an Office 2024 or LTSC device license solve different deployment problems. Moving an installation to another machine may require a different license action.
- Underestimating update obligations: Fixed-feature software still needs security and quality updates. An offline LTSC network needs a documented process for obtaining, testing and distributing them.
- Buying on price alone: Regional pricing, eligibility and reseller terms vary. Verify the edition, license type, number of devices and included services before paying.
Pricing, eligibility and purchase checks
Microsoft does not publish one stable global price table covering every region, plan and licensing channel. Prices can differ by country, tax treatment, subscription term, commercial agreement and reseller. Treat a prominently discounted “perpetual” key with caution: confirm that it is for the intended edition, region and license channel.
- For Office 2024, verify whether the listing is Home or Home & Business, whether it covers one PC or Mac, and whether it is a legitimate product license rather than an account or unauthorized key.
- For Microsoft 365, confirm the exact plan, renewal frequency, device limits, storage allowance and included services.
- For LTSC, confirm that your organization qualifies for the volume-license program, that the quote identifies LTSC 2024, and that activation and deployment rights match your number of devices.
Bottom line: subscription, Office 2024 or LTSC?
Choose Microsoft 365 for current features, multi-device access, cloud storage, web apps and collaboration. Choose Office Home 2024 when you want classic desktop apps on one PC or Mac with a one-time purchase and no bundled Microsoft 365 services. Choose Office LTSC 2024 only when regulatory, operational, deployment-control or connectivity requirements justify a fixed, volume-licensed release. The decisive questions are who is licensed, which devices are covered, whether cloud services are needed and how much change the environment can safely absorb.
