Choose Office Home 2024 if one person needs Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote on a single PC or Mac, expects to keep that computer, and prefers paying once. Choose Microsoft 365 Personal if you work across several devices or want continuing feature updates and cloud storage. Choose Microsoft 365 Family when multiple people need their own accounts and installations. The right answer depends on users, devices, storage, update expectations, connectivity and the length of time you expect to use the software.
The short answer
Office Home 2024 is a perpetual, one-time license for one PC or Mac. You pay once, install the classic Office applications, and can continue using that release without a recurring bill. It receives security updates, but it does not include the next major Office release or new feature updates introduced after its release.
Microsoft 365 is a recurring subscription. Personal covers one person across devices, while Family covers the subscriber and up to five additional people. Subscribers receive the current desktop applications, ongoing feature, security and bug-fix updates, plus cloud storage and other plan-dependent services. Microsoft 365 applications can be used offline after setup, but Microsoft says you should connect at least once a month to avoid reduced functionality.
For a single, stable computer and a fixed set of applications, the one-time license is usually simpler. For multiple devices, several household members, substantial OneDrive use or a preference for always-current features, a subscription can provide more practical value.

What each option actually includes
Office Home 2024
Microsoft lists Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote for Office Home 2024. The license is for one PC or Mac. It is a specific major release rather than a continuously evolving service: later major versions must be purchased separately at the price Microsoft sets when they are released.
- Payment: one upfront purchase.
- Coverage: one computer, either a PC or a Mac.
- Updates: security updates are included; new major-version features are not.
- Storage: no additional online storage is included with the license.
- Internet: required to install and activate; the installed applications can then work offline.
Microsoft 365 Personal
Personal is intended for one person who uses Microsoft 365 on multiple devices. Microsoft’s comparison page lists use on five devices at the same time. The exact application bundle and benefits are plan-specific, so confirm the current US Personal page before paying.

Microsoft 365 Family
Family uses the same subscription model but is designed for a household. The subscriber can share it with up to five additional people. Current US prices and what they mean
Microsoft’s US pages showed the following list prices on October 13, 2026. They are examples captured on that date, not guaranteed checkout prices; regional taxes, promotions, renewal terms and future price changes can alter the amount you pay.

| Product | Annual payment | Monthly payment | Upfront or recurring |
|---|---|---|---|
| Office Home 2024 | Not applicable | Not applicable | $179.99 one time |
| Microsoft 365 Personal | $99.99 per year | $9.99 per month | Recurring subscription |
| Microsoft 365 Family | $129.99 per year | $12.99 per month | Recurring subscription |
At those listed rates, two years of Personal would total $199.98 when paid annually, while two years of Family would total $259.98. Three annual payments would total $299.97 for Personal and $389.97 for Family. These calculations assume the listed prices remain unchanged, do not include taxes or promotions, and do not assign a monetary value to storage, additional users or updates. They are not a promise that a subscription becomes more or less expensive after a particular number of years.
A fair comparison uses your expected ownership period. Include the possibility that you may later buy a new one-time major release, and count subscription benefits only when you will actually use them. If nobody needs OneDrive storage, multiple devices or current feature updates, those benefits should not be treated as automatic savings.

How to decide, step by step
- Count people first. If only one person needs the software, compare Office Home 2024 with Personal. If several people need separate accounts, installations or storage, evaluate Family rather than multiplying a single-user license informally.
- List every device. Write down the PCs, Macs and other devices you expect to use. One computer favors Office Home 2024; moving between a desktop, laptop and other supported devices favors a plan that covers one person across devices.
- Identify the applications you need. Confirm the exact apps included with the edition and operating system. Office Home 2024 explicitly lists Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. Microsoft 365 bundles vary by plan, so do not assume that a benefit from one tier appears in every tier.
- Decide how important new features are. Choose the one-time release if a stable feature set is more important than receiving future capabilities. Choose Microsoft 365 if you want the current desktop versions and continuing feature updates during an active subscription.
- Value storage realistically. Personal lists 1 TB, and Family lists up to 6 TB total across people. Include that storage in your decision only if you will use it for files, backup or synchronization; otherwise it should not drive the purchase.
- Set a payment preference. The one-time license eliminates renewals but requires a larger initial payment. A subscription spreads payment and bundles ongoing updates, but it continues to bill until canceled or changed.
- Choose a time horizon. Estimate how long you will keep the software, then total the relevant annual or monthly payments. For Office Home 2024, also consider whether you would want to buy a later major release separately.
- Check connectivity and account requirements. Both choices need internet for installation and activation. Microsoft 365 additionally requires periodic online validation for full functionality, and files stored only online in OneDrive require a connection unless you synchronize them locally.
- Confirm the checkout region. The prices in this article are US examples from October 13, 2026. Prices, taxes, promotions, app bundles and terms can differ in other countries and can change over time.
Which choice fits common situations?
One person, one long-term computer
Office Home 2024 is the straightforward fit when one person uses one PC or Mac, needs the listed core applications and does not need included cloud storage. You pay once and can continue using that release offline after activation. Accept that a future major version is a separate purchase.

One person with several devices
Microsoft 365 Personal is better aligned with a person who moves between computers and wants the current application versions. Its 1 TB storage allowance may also simplify keeping files available across devices. The recurring cost and monthly online check are the trade-offs.
Best Value
- Create, edit and style DOCUMENTS, SPREADSHEETS & PRESENTATIONS – all the features that you need to get work done
- Included PDF functions to FILL & SIGN forms, ANNOTATE and password PROTECT your PDF documents
- Compatibility with the most popular file formats - OPEN, EDIT & CREATE new and existing documents
- Manage all your email accounts and efficiently schedule with the inlcuded MAIL & CALENDAR apps
- Lifetime License for 1 Windows PC or Laptop
A household with multiple users
Family is the relevant comparison when a subscriber and up to five other people need their own use of the service. The per-person storage structure can be useful for separate files and accounts. Compare the total household need with the annual or monthly Family price rather than comparing it with a single-computer license.
Infrequent offline work
Office Home 2024 has fewer ongoing connectivity obligations after installation and activation. Microsoft 365 applications can also work offline, but Microsoft advises connecting at least monthly; cloud-only files remain unavailable offline unless they have been synchronized locally.
Users who always want the latest features
Microsoft 365 is the only option in this comparison that includes continuing feature updates while the subscription remains active. Office Home 2024 receives security maintenance but stays on its purchased major release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteInstallation, activation and offline use
Office Home 2024
- Use an internet connection to obtain the installer and begin setup.
- Sign in or provide the purchase information Microsoft requests for activation.
- Install the applications on the single licensed PC or Mac.
- After activation, open and edit locally stored documents without an internet connection. Reconnect when needed for account or installation management.
Microsoft 365 Personal or Family
- Start the subscription with a Microsoft account and an internet connection.
- Install the current applications on the devices allowed by your plan; Family users should use their own invited accounts.
- Activate each installation while online.
- For full functionality, connect at least monthly as Microsoft recommends. Keep OneDrive-only files synchronized locally when you know you will work without internet access.
Offline access is not the same as permanent independence from the service. A locally installed Microsoft 365 application may open without a connection for a period, but the subscription still needs periodic validation. A one-time purchase avoids that recurring subscription check, although initial installation and activation still require internet.
Important limitations and pitfalls
- Assuming “one-time” means “never upgrade.” Office Home 2024 remains the release you bought. A later major release is not included.
- Comparing prices without users or devices. A one-computer license and a household subscription solve different coverage problems.
- Treating every Microsoft 365 tier as identical. App bundles, storage and other benefits depend on the specific plan and can change.
- Ignoring renewal pricing. The listed subscription amounts are US prices captured on one date. Check the renewal amount and billing interval before completing checkout.
- Expecting cloud files to work offline automatically. Files that exist only online need a connection. Mark files for local synchronization before traveling or working in an unreliable network.
- Forgetting account access. Activation, subscription status and shared Family access depend on the relevant Microsoft accounts. Keep recovery information current.
- Assuming storage is a backup strategy by itself. Included online storage can help synchronize files, but maintain a separate recovery plan for important data.
Decision checklist
- Do you need the software on exactly one PC or Mac?
- Will more than one person use it?
- How many devices will one person use?
- Do you need Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote only, or a different plan’s applications?
- Will you use 1 TB of Personal storage or the per-person storage offered by Family?
- Are continuing feature updates important?
- Are you comfortable with monthly or annual renewal?
- Will you regularly work offline, and can required files be synchronized locally?
- Have you checked the current price and terms for your country and edition?
Bottom line by priority
| Your priority | Most suitable starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest ongoing commitment for one computer | Office Home 2024 | One upfront payment and no recurring subscription |
| Current features and updates | Microsoft 365 Personal | Ongoing feature, security and bug-fix updates while subscribed |
| Several household users | Microsoft 365 Family | Subscriber plus up to five additional people |
| Cloud storage included | Microsoft 365 Personal or Family | 1 TB for Personal; up to 6 TB total for Family under the listed comparison |
| Minimal recurring online checks after setup | Office Home 2024 | Installed apps work offline after activation; Microsoft 365 requires periodic validation |
There is no universal winner. Office Home 2024 trades future features and cloud storage for a fixed one-time license on one computer. Microsoft 365 trades recurring billing and periodic online validation for current applications, multi-device or multi-person coverage and included storage. Match those trade-offs to the people, devices and services you will actually use, then verify the live regional terms before purchase.
