Microsoft announced around 4,800 role eliminations on July 6, 2026, but said those jobs were not being replaced by AI. The company attributed the changes mainly to shifting customer needs, business models, and priorities; AI is part of the wider workplace context, not a stated cause of these specific cuts.
What Microsoft announced
Microsoft Chief People Officer Amy Coleman announced the cuts in an employee communication published on July 6, 2026. The company said around 4,800 roles would be eliminated, about 2.1% of its global workforce. Coleman identified Commercial and Xbox as the organizations most affected.
She framed the decision as an effort to align investment, people, and energy with business priorities as customer needs and business models change. Coleman wrote: “Our customers’ needs are shifting, the business models that serve them are shifting, and that means the work itself – what we do, where we focus, and how we’re organized – has to transform too.” This describes Microsoft’s stated rationale; it does not independently establish why each role was removed. Did Microsoft say AI caused the layoffs?
No. Coleman explicitly said: “I also want to be direct that the roles eliminated today are not being replaced by AI.” She also acknowledged that “AI is changing how work gets done” and that some routine tasks can be automated. Those statements should be read together: Microsoft recognized AI’s effect on work generally while denying that AI was replacing the roles eliminated in this announcement. That distinction matters because public concern about AI-driven job losses is broader than Microsoft’s explanation for this particular round. TechCrunch reported that the announcement intensified those concerns, while also reporting Microsoft’s position that the eliminated roles were not being replaced by AI. Concern about a possible industry trend is not evidence that AI caused these specific cuts. TechCrunch’s report
What the Xbox cuts add to the picture
The Associated Press reported that 1,600 Xbox workers were included in the July 6 reductions. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma described the business as unhealthy and said its margins were three to ten times lower than those of comparable platform and publishing businesses. AP also reported her comments about a hardware crisis as console component costs rose, and her expectation of another 1,600 job cuts during the fiscal year that began in July. These are company statements reported by AP, not independent proof of the cause of Microsoft’s overall layoffs. Associated Press report

How Microsoft described the workforce changes
The company said the reductions were accompanied by other workforce measures. Microsoft reported that more than 4,000 employees had been redeployed into new roles over the preceding year and that more than 30% of eligible employees participated in a voluntary retirement program. These figures are Microsoft’s own. Microsoft’s July 6 communication

What the available financial context does—and does not—show
Microsoft’s FY2026 second-quarter results reported $81.3 billion in revenue, up 17% year over year, for the quarter ended December 31, 2025. The company also described strong cloud demand and said AI diffusion was at an early stage. Those results provide company-wide business context, but they do not explain the July 2026 cuts or establish AI as their cause. Microsoft FY2026 second-quarter results
A later FY2026 fourth-quarter earnings-call transcript discusses Microsoft’s AI investment and AI business. It likewise supplies context about the company’s strategy, not evidence that AI drove the July workforce decision. Microsoft FY2026 fourth-quarter earnings-call transcript
