Microsoft made its India South Central cloud region in Hyderabad generally available on August 6, 2026. It is one cloud region with three availability zones—not three new regions. Separately, a Microsoft fact sheet published in October 2025 said the company was building three physical datacenters in the greater Hyderabad area. Those are related but different descriptions.
What did Microsoft launch in India?
Microsoft launched India South Central, a cloud region in Hyderabad, Telangana. The company said customers could use the region for eligible Microsoft Cloud services and workloads. Microsoft’s September 21, 2026 update confirmed that the region was live and described it as a strategic hub for Asia and the Global South. Microsoft’s August 6, 2026 launch announcement and September 21 update establish the launch and live status.
The wording “three cloud data centers” can refer to the region’s three availability zones or to the three physical datacenters Microsoft said it was building near Hyderabad. A zone is part of a cloud region’s resilience design; a physical datacenter is a facility. Microsoft’s October 2025 fact sheet described three facilities under construction, not three separate cloud regions. Microsoft’s October 2025 datacenters fact sheet provides that construction description.

How many Microsoft cloud regions are in India?
India South Central is Microsoft’s fourth cloud region in India. The other regions Microsoft named at launch are Central India in Pune, South India in Chennai, and West India in Mumbai. Microsoft separately reported two datacenters operated in partnership with Jio: Jio India West and Jio India Central. Those Jio facilities should not be added to the count of Microsoft cloud regions.

What do three availability zones mean?
Microsoft describes India South Central as a three-zone region designed for resilience and to expand over time. Availability zones are distinct parts of a region intended to support workloads that need resilience within that region. Organizations still need to design and configure their applications for their own availability and recovery objectives; the announcement alone does not establish that any particular workload is automatically resilient.
A region and its zones also do not, by themselves, settle every data-location or compliance question. Microsoft frames local capacity, availability zones, and data-residency choices as options that can help customers address applicable requirements. It says customers remain responsible for determining which legal and sector-specific obligations apply to their workloads. Its “sovereign-ready” and related language should therefore be read as describing capabilities intended to help, not a blanket guarantee of compliance.

Are all Azure and AI services available in Hyderabad?
No. Microsoft said the region launched with a broad portfolio of Azure services and is designed to support its full Azure and AI portfolio, including Microsoft Foundry, as additional capabilities roll out. The company’s September 2026 update says that expansion will happen over the coming months. Availability is progressive and depends on the service and workload; verify the specific service, feature, and region support before planning a deployment. Microsoft’s September 2026 update describes the rollout.

What the launch means for customers
Hyderabad gives organizations another location in India to consider when placing eligible Microsoft Cloud workloads. Whether it is the right choice depends on practical requirements, not just proximity to a region name. Compare it with other regions against the following factors:
Rank #3
- Service availability: Check that the specific Azure service and features required by your workload are available in India South Central.
- Latency: Assess performance for the users, applications, and connected systems that matter to your organization.
- Data location: Confirm the available data-residency choices for the particular service and workload.
- Resilience and recovery: Match zone use and any cross-region design to your required availability and disaster-recovery objectives.
- Controls and obligations: Map your own security, regulatory, and sector-specific requirements to the services and controls you plan to use.
- Cost: Check current, service-specific pricing and availability for the intended region; Microsoft’s launch materials do not provide a like-for-like price comparison across India regions.
Microsoft quoted customers describing expected benefits. Atish Bhanushali, Senior Vice President II and Head of Cloud Infrastructure at HDFC Bank, called the launch “a significant milestone” in the bank’s Azure journey. Bajaj Finance CIO Mudit Mehrish said the region strengthens its digital-transformation efforts through data residency, resilience, and scalability. These are customer statements, not independent service-performance measurements. The quotations appeared in Microsoft’s launch announcement.
Investment, construction and local impact figures
Microsoft’s figures describe announced commitments, estimates, forecasts, and program claims—not all money already spent or outcomes independently verified.

|---|---|---|
| US$17.5 billion | Microsoft’s announced India investment commitment over calendar years 2026–2029 | Announced in December 2025; Microsoft said it built on a US$3 billion commitment announced earlier in 2025. It is a commitment, not an audited amount already spent. Microsoft’s December 9, 2025 announcement. |

| Approximately 22.4 million construction work hours; more than 5,490 jobs at peak activity | Estimated construction activity for the new greater-Hyderabad datacenters | Microsoft’s October 2025 estimates, which the fact sheet says may change without notice; these are not realized or independently verified totals. Microsoft’s October 2025 fact sheet. |
| Approximately 5 million liters of groundwater-recharge capacity by June 2026 | Elikatta groundwater-recharge program | Reported by Microsoft in September 2026. Microsoft’s September 2026 update. |
| US$45.7 billion in Indian public-cloud services spending by 2030; 22.2% annual growth | IDC forecast for India’s public-cloud services market | Forecast figures attributed by Microsoft’s August 2026 announcement to Dr William Lee, IDC Senior Research Director; they are not realized spending figures. Microsoft also said IDC forecast AI spending to grow at double that rate. Microsoft’s launch announcement. |
Cooling and the project timeline
Microsoft says Hyderabad uses enhanced mechanical cooling that consumes zero or effectively zero water for cooling. That claim is scoped to cooling; it does not establish that the entire facility has no water use. Microsoft’s August 2026 announcement describes the cooling approach.
