Microsoft Ink Canvas is a pen-first digital workspace for handwriting, sketching, and annotating images, with optional Copilot features that can generate images or turn canvas content into text. The inking tools work without a Microsoft 365 subscription. The AI features do not. So “AI-powered” describes an added layer on top of a sketchpad that works on its own, not the whole app.
What is Microsoft Ink Canvas?
Microsoft describes Ink Canvas as a freeform starting point for ideas that are still visual or half-formed. You write, sketch, and organize notes on the canvas, bring in images, and annotate over them. Microsoft positions the rough visual work as something you can later develop into a summary, a presentation visual, or a prompt for another tool. In other words, the canvas is where the thinking happens before anything is polished.
What can you do with Microsoft Ink Canvas?

Pen and touch input are both supported. Microsoft says the basic writing and sketching workflow works offline, so you can keep working without a connection. Images can be placed on the canvas and annotated directly, which makes the app useful for marking up a reference, a diagram, or a photographed whiteboard.

Microsoft lists three AI-assisted capabilities:
- Lasso selection for context. You select part of the canvas and give Copilot that selection as context for a request, rather than the whole page.
- Image generation and visual iteration. Copilot can generate images and help you refine them step by step.
- Text generation from canvas content. Copilot can turn what is on the canvas into written text, such as a summary.
These features are separate from the basic inking tools. Microsoft notes that AI usage limits and possible minimum-age limits apply to them. The overview does not state the specific usage quotas.

Does Microsoft Ink Canvas require a Microsoft 365 subscription?
Not for inking. Microsoft’s official Ink Canvas support overview states: “Inking and non-AI features in Microsoft Ink Canvas are available without a Microsoft 365 subscription. Copilot-powered features require a Microsoft 365 subscription.” The page does not name an author, and it does not state a publication date.
The subscription split works like this:

Surface Pro 12-inch (2nd Edition)
Microsoft says Ink Canvas is preinstalled on the new Surface Pro 12-inch (2nd Edition). Buyers of that model do not need a separate download to start using it.
Other supported Surface Pro and Windows devices
Microsoft says consumers with other supported Surface Pro and Windows devices can download the app from Microsoft Store starting October 13, 2026. As of October 9, 2026, that date has not arrived, so the download is not yet available. The baseline requirements Microsoft lists are:

Meeting those baselines does not by itself confirm that a device is supported. Microsoft’s own wording is “supported Surface Pro and Windows devices,” and the overview does not list every model that qualifies. Check the device against Microsoft’s support pages before you rely on it.
Once the Store listing opens, the steps are:
- Confirm the device runs Windows 10 version 18362.0 or higher and has integrated touch support.
- Sign in with a Microsoft account.
- On or after October 13, 2026, open Microsoft Store and download Ink Canvas.
Can I use Ink Canvas with Surface Slim Pen?
Yes. Microsoft describes the Surface Slim Pen as optional pen input for the handwriting and sketching workflow. The pen is sold separately, and touch also works, so a pen is not required to use the app.

On the Surface Pro 12-inch (2nd Edition), the pen’s shortcut button opens a new canvas. On other supported devices, you can set the shortcut manually; the overview does not spell out the steps for doing so.

- Readers who sketch or handwrite on a supported Surface or Windows touch device get a dedicated canvas without paying for a subscription.
- Readers who want AI help from rough sketches need a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan, and should expect usage limits.
- Readers choosing a new device may find the Surface Pro 12-inch (2nd Edition) appealing because the app is preinstalled. That is a hardware decision in its own right, not a requirement for owners of other supported devices.
