Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 results showed fast cloud growth alongside heavy infrastructure investment, but its reported figures do not establish that AI spending itself set a record—or show a standalone return on that spending. For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 43%, Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $59.3 billion, and total capital expenditures were $41 billion.
How strong were Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 results?
For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2026, Microsoft reported revenue of $331.8 billion, up 18% year over year, operating income of $155.2 billion, up 21%, and GAAP net income of $133.7 billion, up 31%. In the fourth quarter, revenue was $90.0 billion, up 18%, and operating income was $40.6 billion, also up 18%.
Quarterly diluted earnings per share (EPS) were $4.81 on a GAAP basis, up 32%. Microsoft also reported non-GAAP diluted EPS of $4.74, up 23%; that measure excludes the impact from investments in OpenAI. The company said discrete items, including a $3.2 billion gain from its Anthropic investment, benefited diluted EPS by $0.27 compared with its prior guidance comparison. Those items matter when interpreting the EPS increase: it should not be read as wholly attributable to underlying operating growth. Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 Q4 earnings release provides the company’s definitions and figures.

How fast is Azure growing?
Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 43% in the quarter ended June 30, 2026. Microsoft said demand continued to exceed available capacity. It attributed the quarter’s outperformance to fleet-efficiency gains and process improvements that enabled it to deliver capacity earlier.

Microsoft Cloud revenue—which is broader than Azure alone—was $59.3 billion for the quarter, up 27%. For the full fiscal year, it exceeded $214 billion. Microsoft’s CFO said nearly 90% of full-year cloud revenue came from customers outside frontier model companies, a useful indicator of customer mix but not a guarantee of future growth. Microsoft also said Azure revenue surpassed $100 billion for the first time during the fiscal year; that is an annual revenue milestone, not the quarter’s Azure growth rate. The figures and management commentary appear in the Q4 earnings-call transcript and the earnings release.
How much is Microsoft spending on AI?
Microsoft reported $41 billion in total capital expenditures (CapEx) in fiscal Q4. It did not report that entire amount as AI spending. Roughly two-thirds went to short-lived assets, primarily CPUs and GPUs; the rest went to long-lived assets. The company described the quarter’s investment as infrastructure spending, but its disclosure does not isolate an AI-only CapEx total.

| Measure | Fiscal Q4 ended June 30, 2026 | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Total capital expenditures | $41 billion | Microsoft-reported total CapEx; not an AI-only figure. |
| Short-lived assets | Roughly two-thirds of CapEx | Primarily CPUs and GPUs, according to Microsoft. |
| Long-lived assets | The remainder | Longer-lived infrastructure; the company did not give a dollar amount in the cited call. |
| Cash paid for property and equipment | $35.8 billion | Cash-flow measure; not interchangeable with total CapEx. |
| Finance leases | $5.6 billion | Primarily for large data-center sites; a distinct related measure. |
The $41 billion figure is total quarterly CapEx, while $35.8 billion is cash paid for property and equipment. They are related disclosures, not competing estimates of the same measure. Microsoft’s Q4 call transcript gives the asset mix and lease context.

On April 29, 2026, before the Q4 results, management projected roughly $190 billion of capital expenditures for calendar 2026, including approximately $25 billion attributed to higher component pricing. This was an outlook, not a reported final total. Microsoft said it remained confident in returns given demand, product usage, and efficiency gains, and expected capacity constraints to continue through at least 2026. Is cloud growth paying for Microsoft’s AI investment?
The published figures show strong cloud growth and substantial investment, but they do not establish a realized, AI-specific return. Microsoft reported total CapEx rather than an AI-only investment figure, and it did not disclose AI-specific revenue, profit, or return on invested capital in these materials.
Margins show some of the trade-off without answering the return question. In Q4, Microsoft’s company-wide gross margin was 67%, down year over year; Microsoft cited Azure sales mix, continued AI infrastructure investment, and growing product usage, partly offset by efficiency gains. Microsoft Cloud gross margin was 65%, also down year over year for similar reasons. Azure segment operating margin remained relatively unchanged at 41%. These are reported business-level margins, not a calculation of AI infrastructure profitability. Microsoft’s Q4 transcript contains the margin discussion.

What do Copilot seats say about AI monetization?
Microsoft reported more than 30 million paid Microsoft 365 Copilot seats at fiscal year-end, with net paid-seat additions more than doubling sequentially in Q4. That is a company-reported adoption measure. The cited results do not break out Copilot revenue or profit, so paid seats alone cannot show how much AI infrastructure investment they have recovered.
