Microsoft announced an easier way to find animated GIFs in Bing Images on October 30, 2014: search for images, open the Type filter, and choose Animated GIF. The announcement also described hover-to-play previews and badges on GIF results. Those details document Bing’s 2014 interface, not a confirmed guide to the current one.
How animated GIF search worked in Bing Images
In its October 30, 2014 announcement, the Bing Image Search Team said users could find animations by filtering image results. The team wrote, “Starting today, there’s an easier way to search for animated GIFs.”
- Search for a subject in Bing Images.
- Open the Type filter below the search box.
- Select Animated GIF. Bing said the page would refresh to show matching animations.
The announcement said users could hover over an image to play its animation, and that a badge could identify GIF results even when a user had not applied the GIF filter. These are descriptions of the experience announced in 2014; Microsoft’s post does not establish that the same controls or behavior remain available today. What Microsoft documented for developers
Microsoft’s Bing Image Search API documentation showed an animated-GIF filter using the parameter imageType=AnimatedGif. Its example combined that filter with freshness=week and mkt=en-us. The example illustrates the documented query format; it does not establish present-day API access, terms, or availability. Bing Image Search API quickstart.

Why GIF search differs from still-image search
A September 19, 2018 Bing Search Quality Insights article explained that a GIF contains multiple frames, so retrieval cannot rely only on its opening image. The post described sentiment analysis, optical character recognition (OCR), and pose modeling as techniques used at that time to interpret what a GIF contains and how it may match a query. It is historical implementation detail, not a description of Bing’s current systems. The article framed the aim as finding “the perfect GIF to express yourself.” Bing Search Quality Insights, September 19, 2018.
What is—and is not—confirmed today
The cited material establishes that Microsoft announced a consumer GIF filter in Bing Images in 2014 and documented an Image Search API filter. It does not confirm whether the consumer interface still has the same Type menu, GIF badge, or hover playback, or whether the API route is currently available under particular terms or in particular regions.
