Microsoft combined Azure Marketplace and AppSource under the Microsoft Marketplace name and experience in a September 25, 2025 launch. Chief Partner Officer Nicole Dezen told CRN the goal was “a single, holistic catalog and destination” where customers of all sizes could discover solutions, while partners gained a broader route to market. The announcement described a United States launch followed by expansion elsewhere; availability and catalog figures below are launch-era claims and should not be read as confirmed 2026 totals.

What Microsoft changed

Azure Marketplace and AppSource were brought together as Microsoft Marketplace. Microsoft described the destination as a place to find, try, buy and deploy cloud solutions, artificial-intelligence applications and agents. The unified experience was intended to replace separate discovery paths with one catalog and purchasing journey.

Why Microsoft says the consolidation matters

A more integrated customer journey

Microsoft said solutions could be discovered within Microsoft products and provisioned under Microsoft Cloud governance and security controls. Those are Microsoft’s stated design goals, not independently measured customer outcomes.

A broader route to market for partners

For software vendors, Microsoft positioned the marketplace as a way to reach customers through direct discovery and through channel procurement. Dezen told CRN that Microsoft would handle much of the back-end work for partners, but the launch materials did not publish an independent assessment of resulting costs, speed or sales performance.

What was in the catalog at launch

Microsoft’s September 2025 announcement said the catalog contained tens of thousands of cloud and industry solutions and that more than 3,000 AI apps and agents were newly available through Marketplace and Microsoft products. These figures describe the launch announcement; Microsoft did not establish them as current catalog totals for 2026.

Demand figures cited by Dezen

In a CRN interview published September 25, 2025, Dezen said more than 6 million people visited the marketplace monthly. She also said the number of customers purchasing AI products through Microsoft’s marketplace had doubled in less than three months of Microsoft’s fiscal year. CRN did not provide a measurement methodology for either figure, so they should be treated as interview claims rather than independently audited marketplace metrics.

How partners could participate

Direct and channel procurement routes

Microsoft described several transaction paths: a customer can buy directly, or procurement can involve a cloud solution provider, a distributor, or a multiparty arrangement. The appropriate route depends on who contracts for the software, which partner performs implementation or support, and what offer type the vendor makes available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Route Who procures Typical participating parties Transaction mechanism described at launch
Direct marketplace purchase Customer Customer and software vendor Standard marketplace offer
CSP procurement Cloud solution provider for or with the customer CSP, software vendor and customer CSP private offer
Multiparty procurement Customer with a channel partner Customer, CSP or reseller and software vendor Multiparty private offer
Distributor-led procurement Customer or its channel provider Distributor, reseller or CSP and software vendor Distributor integration; exact commercial terms vary
Resale-enabled offer Authorized channel partner for the customer Software vendor and approved reseller Resale-enabled offer, announced in private preview

The launch sources describe these mechanisms but do not provide a comprehensive comparison of their costs or suitability. Availability of private-preview and resale features should be confirmed before a transaction is planned.

Distributor integrations

Microsoft highlighted integrations involving Arrow, Crayon, Ingram Micro, Pax8 and TD SYNNEX. Naming those companies indicates the ecosystem Microsoft presented at launch; it does not establish that every integration, region or offer is available to every partner today.

Resale-enabled offers

In the announced private preview, a software vendor could authorize channel partners to resell an offer by geography and could later change or remove that authorization. Cisco partner Amy Bahlo called the model a way to extend reach without adding sales overhead. Her statement is a partner perspective, not an independent finding about marketplace economics.

What the rollout meant for existing listings

Microsoft’s official announcement said the unified experience was available in the United States and coming soon elsewhere. CRN reported that visitors to Azure Marketplace and AppSource would be redirected over the following weeks and months. That launch wording does not establish the current status in every country or edition. Vendors and buyers should check Microsoft’s current marketplace documentation and catalog for regional availability, eligibility and offer status.

What this means for a partner evaluating the marketplace

  1. Identify the buyer and contracting path. Decide whether the customer will purchase directly, through a CSP, through a distributor, or through a multiparty arrangement.
  2. Assign the delivery work. Clarify whether the ISV, reseller, systems integrator or distributor will configure, implement and support the solution.
  3. Check the offer type. Determine whether a standard offer, private offer, multiparty private offer or resale-enabled offer is available in the target geography.
  4. Verify launch-era assumptions. Confirm current catalog placement, redirect behavior, preview status and regional eligibility rather than relying on September 2025 announcements.
  5. Measure your own results. Track discovery, conversion, provisioning time, channel-sourced revenue and support workload; the launch announcements did not publish independent benchmarks for these outcomes.

The strategic bet behind “one catalog”

Microsoft’s consolidation is a channel and product-discovery strategy: put business applications, cloud software, AI applications and agents behind one marketplace identity while preserving multiple procurement paths. Dezen also cited an IDC projection that more than 1.3 billion AI agents could be operating by 2028. That is a third-party forecast repeated in the interview, not a forecast of Microsoft Marketplace usage.
