Microsoft is moving Microsoft 365 Family and Premium from separate 1 TB allowances for each member to a 2 TB shared pool; new Pro subscriptions are listed with 5 TB shared. That can reduce total household capacity if several people currently use substantial portions of their individual allowances. The effect and timing depend on your plan and account: Microsoft’s support pages give conflicting dates for when existing Family and Premium subscriptions switch.
What is changing in Microsoft 365 storage?
Microsoft’s current storage quota comparison lists 1 TB per person for Family, Premium and Pro subscriptions started before October 6, 2026. Under the new model, new Family and Premium subscriptions have 2 TB shared storage, while new Pro subscriptions have 5 TB shared storage. The shared quota is available to the subscription owner and up to five additional members.
This is a change in how storage is allocated, not simply a uniform reduction for every household. A family that previously had six individual 1 TB allowances could have up to 6 TB in total; a 2 TB shared pool is less total capacity if the household needs more than 2 TB. A household that uses less overall may find pooling more convenient because members can draw from one common allowance rather than being limited by separate individual quotas. Microsoft describes the model as offering “more flexibility by making storage available to the people who need it most.”
Does the shared pool let family members see one another’s files?
No. Microsoft says that although the storage quota is shared, members’ files remain private. Each member can access only their own files unless they explicitly share content with someone else. Sharing a quota does not, by itself, grant access to another person’s OneDrive files.

When will existing Family and Premium plans change?
Microsoft’s support pages currently disagree on the transition date. The quota comparison says existing Family and Premium plans receive 2 TB shared storage on renewals starting April 1, 2027. Microsoft’s more detailed storage-change page says the change generally takes effect after the first renewal on or after May 2, 2027. Neither date should be treated as settled for every subscriber while Microsoft’s pages conflict.
Check the renewal date and storage notices in your Microsoft account, and consult Microsoft’s current support guidance before making a plan decision. The detailed page says eligible existing Family and Premium subscribers in supported markets might receive transitional bonus storage, with details communicated before the change; it does not establish a universal bonus amount or say that every subscriber qualifies.

A qualifying plan change can bring the shared-storage model into effect earlier than the ordinary renewal transition. Microsoft gives an upgrade from Family to Premium as an example. The detailed page says a downgrade alone does not trigger the shared model early.
How does Pro differ from Family and Premium?
Microsoft’s current quota page lists 5 TB shared for new Pro subscriptions and says existing Pro subscriptions transition starting November 1, 2027. That is distinct from the conflicting Family and Premium dates. The quota page lists existing Pro subscriptions started before October 6, 2026, at 1 TB per person; check your account for the terms and transition notice that apply to your subscription.

Which Microsoft 365 storage allowance applies to each plan?
| Plan or subscription status | OneDrive storage listed by Microsoft | Allocation |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | 100 GB | One person |
| Personal | 1 TB | One person |
| New Family | 2 TB | Shared by up to six members |
| New Premium | 2 TB | Shared by up to six members |
| New Pro | 5 TB | Shared by up to six members |
| Family, Premium or Pro started before October 6, 2026 | 1 TB per person | Per-person allowance under the legacy model; transition timing varies by plan |
These are Microsoft policy figures, not a guarantee that every plan name or offer is available in every market. Microsoft also says eligible Personal, Family, Premium and Pro subscribers can add OneDrive storage up to 10 TB total; eligibility and account terms apply. The quota page lists 100 GB of mailbox storage with Microsoft 365 subscriptions, which is separate from the OneDrive cloud-storage allocation.
What happens if your OneDrive is over quota?
Microsoft says users over their storage quota cannot upload, edit or sync new OneDrive files. Existing files remain, but become read-only. Its quota guidance also warns that an account may be frozen after three months and files may be deleted after six months if it remains over the OneDrive limit. These are Microsoft’s general support warnings; check your account notices and current guidance for your situation.

For subscribers approaching the new shared 2 TB limit, Microsoft says it will send notifications. The options it identifies include freeing space, buying eligible additional storage, upgrading, or taking other steps to reduce usage. If syncing or new uploads matter to your household, check the account’s actual usage rather than relying only on the plan’s headline allowance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to decide whether to keep your plan or change it
Compare your household’s actual storage use with the allowance and transition terms shown for your subscription. The number of people on the plan is not enough on its own: what matters is how much each person uses and whether their combined usage fits the pool.

- Keep the current plan if your household’s expected use fits the applicable shared allowance and the timing works for you.
- Compare another tier if the listed capacity better suits your needs. Personal is listed at 1 TB for one person, while new Pro is listed at 5 TB shared for up to six members.
- Check add-on eligibility if you need more OneDrive capacity; Microsoft says eligible subscribers can add storage up to 10 TB total.
- Move or archive some files elsewhere if reducing cloud usage is preferable. An external drive can hold a local copy, but it does not replace OneDrive syncing or provide the same access across devices.
Plan names, availability and account terms can vary by market. Microsoft’s consumer Microsoft 365 FAQ may describe older per-person storage language, so use the current quota and storage-change pages and your own account notices to confirm the policy that applies.
