Microsoft and Reddit announced a partnership on December 13, 2017, to bring Reddit communities, discussions, and AMAs into Bing search. The deal also included Power BI templates for businesses analyzing Reddit activity. Microsoft later introduced generative search and Copilot Search, but official announcements do not confirm whether the original Reddit-specific features or Power BI templates remain available in 2026.

What did Microsoft and Reddit announce?

The partnership had two distinct parts: consumer-facing Reddit results in Bing and business-facing Reddit analysis through Power BI. Microsoft’s Bing Team described the search additions as a way to draw on community knowledge; as it put it on December 13, 2017, “A key element of Intelligent Search is bringing together different sources of knowledge, like the wisdom of the crowd, to help people make decisions.” (Microsoft Bing, December 13, 2017)

Reddit communities and conversations in Bing

The 2017 announcement described three types of Reddit-related search experiences:

  • Community previews: A search could show a subreddit or community preview featuring popular conversations, helping people assess a community before visiting.
  • Conversation snippets: For general queries that Reddit discussions were considered to answer well, Bing could surface a relevant Reddit conversation snippet.
  • AMA discovery: Bing could help people find Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) results, including snapshots of completed AMAs and schedules for upcoming ones.

Reddit summarized the launch as “Bing Intelligent Search: first-ever search experiences returning Reddit results for AMAs, Questions, and Communities.” (Reddit, December 13, 2017)

Power BI templates for business analysis

The business component used Power BI solution templates for brand management and targeting. Reddit said these tools let businesses monitor communities, inspect mentions and sentiment, and compare activity over time. That describes what Reddit announced at launch; the announcement does not establish whether those templates are still available.

What the 2017 audience figures meant

The original posts included audience and activity figures to explain the scale of Reddit discussions at the time. They are historical figures from 2017, not current measurements.

Figure Attribution and date How to read it
330 million monthly active users Microsoft Bing, 2017 A figure reported by Microsoft in its launch post; not a current audience count.
2.8 million comments daily Microsoft Bing, 2017 Microsoft’s reported daily figure in the same 2017 post.
More than 2.5 million comments per day across 138,000 active communities Reddit, 2017 Reddit’s separate reported figures in its launch announcement.

The two organizations reported different daily comment totals. Their posts do not explain the difference, so the numbers should remain attributed to their respective publishers rather than treated as one reconciled statistic. (Microsoft Bing; Reddit)

Are the original Reddit features still in Bing?

That remains unconfirmed in the official announcements available through 2026. The 2017 posts establish what Microsoft and Reddit launched then, but later Microsoft updates do not say whether those specific community previews, conversation snippets, or AMA results continued, were replaced, or were removed. The same uncertainty applies to the Power BI templates.

Microsoft’s search experience has since changed. On July 24, 2024, Microsoft introduced Bing generative search, initially for a small percentage of queries. It described generated responses with source links while retaining regular search results. (Microsoft Bing, July 24, 2024)

On April 4, 2025, Microsoft announced Copilot Search in Bing, with summaries, answers, prominent source citations, and related-topic exploration. Microsoft said it was rolling out worldwide except Russia and China. That announcement does not address the fate of the Reddit-specific 2017 modules. (Microsoft Bing, April 4, 2025)

How Reddit search evolved separately

Reddit later announced Reddit Answers, a conversational AI interface that draws on Reddit conversations and links to posts and communities. Its announcement page includes later updates: an October 2025 availability update and a May 2026 note that Reddit Answers had merged into Reddit search. This is context for Reddit’s own search tools, not confirmation about the Microsoft partnership. (Reddit, December 9, 2024, with later updates)
