If Microsoft treats your personal account as a child account, first check the birth date on your Microsoft account profile. If you cannot change it yourself, the fix depends on whether an adult has already given consent—and, if so, which adult Microsoft account gave it. If the birth date is correct and only Family Safety limits remain, ask the family organizer to review those settings instead.
First, tell an age-and-consent problem from a Family Safety restriction
These situations can look similar, but they have different fixes:
| What you see | Likely issue | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The birth date is wrong or locked, or sign-in says parent or guardian consent is required. | Microsoft’s account-age classification and consent process. | Check the birth date, then follow the correction route for an account with or without existing consent. Microsoft’s birth-date instructions explain the process. |
| The birth date is correct, but screen-time, app, web, or other Family Safety settings still apply. | Organizer-managed safety settings on an adult family member. | Ask the family organizer to review the settings. Microsoft explains this case in its guidance on Family Safety settings enforced on adults. |
The steps below apply to personal Microsoft accounts and the account-age and consent flow described by Microsoft. Work or school accounts may use different policies and permissions.
Check the birth date on your Microsoft account
- Sign in to your Microsoft account and open your profile’s personal information.
- Check the listed birth date. If the profile lets you edit it, correct it and save the change.
- If the date is locked or the account is still treated as a child, use the applicable consent route below. Microsoft’s instructions are under “I’m an adult, but Microsoft thinks I’m a child” on its birth-date support page.
Microsoft says the consent-flow threshold is 18, except 19 in Canada. This is Microsoft’s stated threshold for that process, not a universal statement of the legal age in every country; use the guidance applicable to your region.

If an adult account already gave consent
The adult Microsoft account that originally gave consent must manage the child account’s birth-date information. That account may belong to a different person from the current family organizer.
- Sign in with the adult personal Microsoft account that originally gave consent.
- Open Microsoft’s birth-date instructions and follow the “I’m an adult, but Microsoft thinks I’m a child” steps to open Manage child accounts.
- Select “Edit this child’s personal info” for the account whose birth date needs correction, update the information, and save.
If the account is missing from consent management, verify which adult Microsoft account granted consent. Microsoft says only the account that originally gave it can manage that consent; it may have been a different adult or a different Microsoft account. See Managing parental consent.

If Microsoft is asking for parent or guardian consent
If sign-in displays “Parent or guardian consent is required for this account,” use Microsoft’s consent request flow, then review the accounts for which consent was given and correct your personal information.
- Start the consent flow at login.live.com.
- Choose “I’m a parent or guardian” and sign in with an adult personal Microsoft account.
- Give consent and complete the Family Safety step shown during the process.
- Review the accounts for which consent was given and select “Edit this child’s personal info” for your account.
- Correct the birth date or other relevant personal information and save.
Microsoft’s birth-date guidance describes the correction flow. Its separate consent-management guidance explains who can manage an existing consent. Regional consent requirements can differ.

If the birth date is correct but restrictions remain
Do not treat continuing screen-time, app, or web limits as proof that the birth date is still wrong. Microsoft says an adult family member may still have safety settings managed by the family organizer. Ask the organizer to review and change the settings applied to your account; Microsoft’s Family Safety troubleshooting and adult-settings guidance cover this distinction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If you cannot access the account or the right adult account
- If the profile cannot be reached, use Microsoft’s sign-in helper linked from its birth-date support page.
- If you do not know which adult gave consent, check other adult Microsoft accounts that may have completed the original consent. A current family organizer is not necessarily the account that can manage consent.
- If you need more help, Microsoft directs users to Contact Support. Its agents cannot access or change account details directly, so support should not be expected to override a birth date.
Microsoft’s instructions for adding people to a family group explain family-group roles, but adding or replacing an account is not Microsoft’s documented standard fix for an incorrect age classification.
