Micron’s roughly $15 billion announcement is for a planned leading-edge memory fab in Boise, Idaho—not its separate New York megafab. Announced in September 2022, the Boise project was described by Micron as the first new memory manufacturing fab built in the United States in 20 years. The company’s May 2026 filing said it expected the first Idaho fab to begin wafer output in mid-2027 and a second in late 2028; those remain company projections, not completed milestones.
What Micron announced in Boise
On September 1, 2022, Micron announced an investment of approximately $15 billion through the end of the decade for a new leading-edge memory fab in Boise, Idaho. The planned facility is co-located with Micron’s existing research and development center. The $15 billion is the company’s stated planned investment; it is not the amount of a federal grant.

Micron called the project the “First new memory fab in the U.S. in 20 years.” That is the company’s description of its planned facility, rather than an independently audited count of every U.S. memory manufacturing site. The announcement also positioned the fab as part of a domestic supply chain for leading-edge memory.
Why Micron said the fab matters
Micron said the facility would help supply leading-edge memory for markets including automotive and data centers, as demand grows with adoption of technologies such as artificial intelligence and 5G. CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said the fab would support a reliable domestic supply of semiconductors, which he linked to U.S. technology leadership and economic and national security.

Boise schedule and job forecast
In its May 2026 SEC filing, Micron said it expected wafer output from the first Idaho fab in mid-calendar 2027 and from the second in late calendar 2028. These are forward-looking dates from the company, not confirmation that either fab has begun production.
Micron’s 2022 announcement projected more than 17,000 new American jobs by the end of the decade, including approximately 2,000 direct Micron jobs. That figure is the company’s forecast, not a reported employment outcome.
Boise and Clay, New York, are separate projects
Micron’s New York megafab is a distinct project planned for Clay, New York. The Boise announcement’s approximately $15 billion investment should not be confused with the much larger, multi-fab New York plan.

| Clay, New York | Separate leading-edge DRAM project; Micron describes plans for up to four fabs. | Micron says the project is expected to supply product in 2030 and beyond. Its current project page describes a potential investment of up to $125 billion over more than 20 years, with four planned cleanrooms of approximately 600,000 square feet each, totaling 2.4 million square feet. |
Micron’s 2026 New York update said the site reached first concrete in July, less than six months after breaking ground in January. The company described an expectation of up to 50,000 New York jobs, including 9,000 direct Micron jobs. Those plans, dates, and job projections concern New York, not the Boise announcement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How federal incentives relate to the investment
Micron’s May 2026 SEC filing reported agreements for up to $6.1 billion in direct CHIPS Act funding for planned Boise and New York fabs combined. That amount covers multiple projects; it should not be presented as a grant for the Boise fab alone. The filing also reported up to $275 million in direct funding for Virginia fab modernization and a 35% investment tax credit for qualified U.S. semiconductor manufacturing investments under the CHIPS Act. These are separate funding and tax-credit details, not the definition of Micron’s announced $15 billion Boise investment.
