Micron’s X100 was a data-center NVMe SSD built on 3D XPoint, and Micron claimed it could deliver more than 9 GB/s in read, write, and mixed modes. That 2019 figure was a vendor claim—not an independently established benchmark or a guarantee of performance in every application. Micron later reported shipping the drive, but its official statements do not establish that X100 SSDs are broadly available today.

What the Micron X100 was designed to do

Micron announced the X100 on October 24, 2019, describing it as a 3D XPoint NVMe SSD for storage- and memory-intensive data-center applications. The company positioned it as the first product in a planned family, not as a general-purpose consumer drive. Micron’s launch announcement also said the X100 used the standard NVMe interface and required no software changes to receive its benefits.

That broad interface statement does not confirm compatibility with a particular server, PCIe slot, firmware, or operating system. The announcement did not include a system compatibility matrix, so deployment decisions require documentation for the specific drive and host system.

What “more than 9 GB/s” means

Micron claimed more than 9 GB/s of bandwidth in read, write, and mixed modes. It also advertised up to 2.5 million input/output operations per second (IOPS), consistent read-write latency 11 times better than NAND SSDs, and a two-to-four-times improvement in end-user experience for various applications with prevalent data-center workloads. These are all claims from the company’s October 2019 announcement.

Micron MTFDKBG1T9TFR-1BC1ZABYYR 7450 Pro 1.92 TB Solid State Drive - M.2 22110 Internal - PCI Express NVMe PCI Express NVMe 4.0x4 - Read Intensive - TAA Compliant
  • High Capacity: 1.92 TB solid state drive provides ample storage for demanding applications
  • Fast Performance: PCIe NVMe interface delivers blazing-fast data transfer speeds
  • Compact Design: M.2 form factor measures just 22mm wide for easy installation in laptops and desktops
  • Reliable Data: Built-in ECC memory provides error correction for mission-critical applications
  • Trusted Brand: Micron is a leading supplier of memory and storage solutions

The headline number describes bandwidth, not a universal speed that every workload or application will achieve. The announcement does not provide a complete benchmark protocol, tested configuration, or workload-level results that would let readers independently reproduce or compare the figures. It is therefore more accurate to say Micron claimed the X100 could exceed 9 GB/s than to call that performance independently proven.

What happened to the X100 after launch

Micron said the drive would enter limited sampling with select customers in the quarter of its October 2019 announcement. Its 2019 annual-report material later stated that it had shipped the X100 NVMe SSD as its first product in a new family of high-performance 3D XPoint memory solutions. The company’s 2019 annual-report materials establish shipment, but not normal retail availability.

On March 16, 2021, Micron said there was insufficient market validation to justify the high ongoing investment needed to commercialize 3D XPoint at scale. The update also described a change in the company’s data-center portfolio strategy. Micron’s 2021 portfolio announcement helps explain why the X100 did not become a scaled product family from Micron.

Micron’s current SSD portfolio page promotes other product families, including the 9550 data-center SSD; it does not say whether X100 drives may be found through secondary-market sellers. The official sources establish sampling and shipment, but do not confirm present retail listings, price, support status, or availability.

How to compare the X100 with other SSDs

The 9 GB/s headline alone is not enough to rank the X100 against current drives. A useful comparison needs matching workload and measurement conditions, including:

  • Sequential read, write, and mixed-workload bandwidth.
  • Random IOPS, with block size and queue depth specified.
  • Latency distribution and consistency, not just a single latency claim.
  • Endurance, capacity, interface, form factor, and power requirements.
  • Price and availability for the same market and time period.

The X100 launch material does not provide enough comparable independent test data to score it against current SSDs on these measures. Nor should a newer Micron SSD be treated as an X100 or described as using 3D XPoint without product-specific evidence.
