Metroid Prime 4: Beyond connects most directly to earlier Prime games through Sylux. Introduced in Metroid Prime Hunters, Sylux has a grudge against Samus and the Galactic Federation. Producer Kensuke Tanabe says the 100% endings of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Metroid Prime: Federation Force laid groundwork for the Samus–Sylux story that Beyond begins. Nintendo’s synopsis then picks up with Sylux catching up to Samus, whose clash with him activates an artifact and sends her to Viewros.
What is the connection between Beyond and earlier Prime games?
The clearest link is a long-running thread about Sylux, rather than a direct continuation of every conflict in the first three numbered Prime games. Tanabe says he had wanted to tell a Samus-and-Sylux story and that he laid groundwork for it in the 100% endings of Prime 3 and Federation Force.
Tanabe’s account appears in an interview published in Nintendo Dream Vol. 382, March 2026 edition, and is available in an English translation hosted by Omega Metroid. He said: “I had always wanted to one day turn the story of Samus and Sylux into a game, which I laid the groundwork for in the 100% endings of Prime 3 and Metroid Prime: Federation Force.” The English wording is the translator’s, not an original English statement.
Where Sylux fits into the series
Hunters introduced the character
Sylux first appeared among the rival hunters in Metroid Prime Hunters. Tanabe says the game’s designers gave Sylux a grudge against both Samus and the Galactic Federation, but he asked them not to supply a detailed backstory. He hoped to expand the Prime universe and potentially use characters in future stories, leaving Sylux’s motives open for later development.

Prime 3 and Federation Force set up the later story
Tanabe specifically points to the 100% endings of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Metroid Prime: Federation Force as groundwork for the Samus–Sylux story. That detail matters: the connection he describes is not simply that the games share a universe, but that their completion endings planted story material he intended to develop later.
How Beyond begins
Nintendo’s official game overview says Sylux catches up with Samus. Their clash activates a strange artifact that transports her to Viewros, an unknown planet once inhabited by an ancient civilization. Samus must explore the planet and find a way home.

- 1. Explore the mysterious planet Viewros as the renowned bounty hunter Samus Aran
- 2. Scan your surroundings for clues and make the most of your equipment and weapons to survive
- 3. Use Samus’s newfound psychic abilities—and her technologically advanced bike, the Vi-O-La—to traverse and explore the environment.
- 4. Aim with a Joy-Con 2 controller as a mouse
- 5. Experience enhanced resolution, framerate, and load times in the Nintendo Switch 2 edition of the game
The new adventure brings in the Lamorn, psychic abilities and Sol Valley, a desert where Samus can travel on the Vi-O-La. These elements belong to the new Viewros setting; Nintendo’s overview does not present them as explanations of the older Phazon conflict. The story therefore has two layers: the Samus–Sylux thread carried over from earlier games, and the new mystery of Viewros and its ancient civilization.

Only in a qualified sense. Nintendo described Metroid Prime 3: Corruption as the final part of the Prime trilogy in a 2007 interview with the game’s team. Assistant producer Risa Tabata identified Dark Samus as one of Corruption’s key themes. That places the numbered trilogy’s Phazon-era conflict in a distinct story arc. Tanabe’s later explanation identifies Sylux—not Dark Samus or Phazon—as the specific bridge into Beyond.

It would be too strong to say that Beyond directly resolves every plotline from those games. Nintendo’s available synopsis and product overview establish its opening and setting, but do not provide a complete series timeline or explain every spoiler-level connection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need to play the earlier games first?
The available sources do not establish that earlier games are required to follow Beyond. Nintendo’s synopsis gives the immediate premise: Sylux catches Samus, an artifact transports her to Viewros, and she searches for a way home. Playing Hunters can provide Sylux’s background, while the 100% endings of Prime 3 and Federation Force are the specific setup Tanabe names. Those are useful context, not a confirmed prerequisite.

Optional extras and editions
Nintendo lists a Nintendo Switch version, a physical Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, and a Switch 2 upgrade pack as distinct options. The Switch 2 Edition adds mouse-control support, enhanced visuals and frame rates, and Quality and Performance modes. Nintendo’s product page lists December 4, 2025 as the Switch 2 Edition release date; check that page for current availability and pricing.
The optional Sylux amiibo can make an in-game cinematic easier to access and plays voice lines, according to Nintendo’s amiibo page. It is an extra, not a requirement for understanding the story. Nintendo also announced Metroid Prime 1–3: A Visual Retrospective, a book featuring concept drawings, behind-the-scenes illustrations and commentary; its current availability is not established here. See Nintendo’s announcement for details.
