Both measurements describe the width across the flats of a fastener head—not its thread size. For the best fit, use the socket marked with the fastener’s specified size and measurement system. A close conversion is not a guarantee of a safe fit, particularly when the fastener is worn or under load.
What metric and SAE socket sizes measure
A socket’s size is the distance between opposing flat faces inside its opening, which matches the width across the flats of a hexagonal fastener head. Metric socket markings give that dimension in millimetres; SAE markings give it in fractional inches. A thread designation alone does not tell you which socket size to use. Check the fastener specification or measure across its flats.
“SAE” is commonly used to distinguish inch-based socket sizes from metric ones. The labels identify measurement systems, not a promise that two sockets or fasteners are interchangeable.
Can you substitute an SAE socket for a metric one?
Sometimes two nominal sizes are close, but the gap varies considerably. Compel Group’s conversion chart, reviewed August 16, 2026, compares selected metric sizes with nearby SAE sizes as follows. Its labels and gaps are the chart’s guidance, not a universal fit guarantee.

- Full Size: 1/4'' drive socket - SAE Size (1/2'', 1/4'', 3/8'', 3/16'', 5/16'', 7/16'', 5/32'', 7/32'', 9/32'', 11/32'', 13/32'', 15/32''), Metric Size (4, 4.5, 5, 5.5, 6, 6.5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 mm); 3/8 inch drive socket - SAE Size (1/2'', 7/16'', 9/16''), Metric size (11, 12, 13 mm); 3/8'' reversible ratchet, 1/4'' spinner handle, 3/8''(F) to 1/4''(M) adapter, 3/8 drive extension bar, spin disk
- DURABILITY: This socket set is made of Cr-V, the chrome polished surface and after heat treatment, performance and durability increase more
- Two Systems and Practical: The sockets have two specifications (1/4 inch and 3/8 inch) and two systems. Thanks to the clear laser graduations, you can quickly identify sockets in metric or imperial system
- Essential Accessories: The ratchet handle provides smooth operation and efficient torque for fastening and loosening tasks. The Spinner bar offers extra leverage for stubborn or tight fasteners. Extension bars allow better reach in deep or hard-to-access areas, improving flexibility during work. Additionally, the adapters enable seamless conversion between different drive sizes, expanding compatibility across various sockets and tools
- Remarkable Design & Solid Box: Each socket has its own dedicated slot for organized storage and quick access, with clearly marked sizes for easy identification. The durable blow-molded case provides strong protection, preventing loss or mix-ups. The well-structured design also makes it convenient to carry and store in garages, workshops, or vehicles
| Metric socket | Nearest SAE size in Compel’s chart | Charted gap | Chart label |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 mm | 5/16 in | 0.0025 in | Good |
| 10 mm | 3/8 in | 0.0187 in | Poor |
| 12 mm | 15/32 in | 0.0036 in | Good |
| 13 mm | 1/2 in | 0.0118 in | Poor |
| 16 mm | 5/8 in | 0.0049 in | Loose |
| 17 mm | 11/16 in | 0.0182 in | Poor |
| 19 mm | 3/4 in | 0.0020 in | Good |
| 27 mm | 1 1/16 in | 0.0005 in | Good |
Compel Group’s chart attributes its figures to ASME B107.100. The gaps and fit labels above should be understood as that chart’s comparisons; they do not establish that a substitute will fit every fastener safely. For example, the chart calls 19 mm and 3/4 inch a good comparison, but that does not make the sizes identical. It labels 17 mm and 11/16 inch poor, with a charted gap of 0.0182 inch.
Why a close conversion can still be a bad fit
Clearance between the socket and fastener can let the socket slip or bear on the corners rather than fitting securely across the flats. That can round the fastener, especially if its corners are already worn or you apply substantial force. Use the correct size and system whenever possible; do not treat a chart’s “good” label as permission to substitute in every situation. Compel warns about excess clearance and rounded corners, but its thresholds are chart guidance rather than a universal standard.

Which socket set should you choose?
If your work regularly involves both metric and inch-based fasteners, a dual metric-and-SAE set is a practical starting point. It gives you the correctly marked size more often, rather than making approximate conversions your routine. Choose the coverage and features for the work you actually do; no single set can be assumed to cover every task.
- Size range: Match the included sizes to the fasteners you encounter. A set’s label alone does not establish that it includes every size you need.
- Drive size: Choose a drive size suited to the tools and work involved.
- Point profile: Check whether you need six-point or twelve-point sockets. The appropriate profile depends on the fastener and application.
- Reach: Shallow and deep sockets serve different access needs.
- Construction: Standard work may call for different construction from high-strength, thin-wall, or other specialty applications.
These distinctions matter beyond the size marking. SAE International’s MA4534A covers high-strength commercial and universal metric sockets for six-point hex fasteners, with a design intended to transmit torque without bearing on the outer 5% of the fastener’s wrenching points. The standard was stabilized on February 10, 2013, and says its dimensional data do not mean every listed size is a stock production size. SAE International’s MA4534A scope.

ANSI’s catalog describes SAE AS 954H-2023 as covering high-strength thin-wall sockets, universal sockets, box wrenches, and torque adaptors for twelve-point fasteners. It also summarizes metric socket requirements in AS955 and says AS955 supersedes MA4534 and MA4535. These are standards scopes, not consumer-set recommendations. ANSI’s catalog listing.

- Find the fastener’s specified wrench size. Consult its specification where available; do not infer socket size from the thread designation.
- Confirm the measurement system. Read the marking as millimetres for a metric socket or fractional inches for an SAE socket.
- Check the fit on the fastener. The correctly sized socket should seat securely across the flats. If it feels loose, do not force it under load.
- Consider profile and access. Select the appropriate point configuration and socket depth for the fastener and the space around it.
ASME B107.17-2020 (R2025), as described in ANSI’s catalog, sets final inspection gage sizes and test mandrel sizes for inch and metric wrench openings, including spark-plug wrench openings. It covers commonly manufactured sizes rather than every possible size; it is a standards reference, not a substitute for identifying the actual fastener. ANSI’s listing for ASME B107.17-2020 (R2025).
