Space, sky, ground: a meteoroid is a small natural particle in space; a meteor is the light-producing event as material enters an atmosphere; and a meteorite is material that survives the passage and reaches a surface. The terms describe where the material is and what happens to it.
How do meteoroids, meteors, and meteorites differ?
| Term | Where or when | What it names |
|---|---|---|
| Meteoroid | In space | A small natural particle, often rock or metal |
| Meteor | During passage through an atmosphere | The visible light and associated phenomena produced by incoming material |
| Meteorite | At a planet’s or moon’s surface | Material that survives the atmospheric passage and reaches the surface |
NASA summarizes the distinction as space, atmosphere, and ground (NASA Science). It is a useful way to remember that these are not three names for the same object at the same moment: the word changes with the material’s location and what is happening to it.
What is a meteoroid?
A meteoroid is a small natural particle moving through space. It may come from an asteroid, a comet, or material thrown off a planetary surface by an impact, according to the NASA/JPL glossary.
NASA/JPL’s public-facing Fast Facts describes a meteoroid as less than about 3 feet (1 metre) across (NASA/JPL Fast Facts). That is a convenient general description, not a size boundary used identically in every scientific context. NASA’s 2020 technical terminology document reports an approximate range of 30 micrometres to 1 metre from IAU Commission F1 (NASA technical terminology).

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What is a meteor?
A meteor is the atmospheric event, not the space rock itself. When a meteoroid enters an atmosphere and produces visible light, the streak is called a meteor. NASA’s technical terminology defines a meteor more broadly as occurring when a solid particle passes through a gaseous planetary atmosphere and produces light, ionization, shock waves, and other physical phenomena (NASA technical terminology).
Why is it called a shooting star?
“Shooting star” is a familiar nickname for a meteor’s streak of light. It is not a star: the light comes from the atmospheric passage of incoming material (NASA/JPL Fast Facts).

What are a fireball and a bolide?
A particularly bright meteor is often called a fireball; NASA’s March 26, 2026 explainer also uses bolide for especially bright examples. Brightness terminology can vary by context, so these are descriptive labels rather than names for a separate stage in the journey (NASA Watch the Skies).
What is a meteorite?
If some of the incoming material survives its passage through the atmosphere and reaches a planet’s or moon’s surface, the surviving material is a meteorite. NASA’s ARES description uses the same surface-based distinction (NASA Johnson Space Center ARES).

Not every meteoroid becomes a meteorite. NASA says most space rocks smaller than a football field break apart, and that less than 5% of the original object usually reaches the ground. This is NASA’s general description, not a guaranteed survival rate for every entry (NASA meteorite facts).
What is a meteor shower?
A meteor shower is a rise in observed meteors associated with meteoroids that share an origin and similar orbits as they enter an atmosphere. The debris is not itself the streak: each visible streak is a meteor (NASA Watch the Skies).

How much material reaches Earth?
NASA says about 48.5 tons (44 tonnes, or 44,000 kilograms) of meteoritic material falls on Earth each day, and that almost all of it vaporizes in the atmosphere (NASA Science). The figure describes incoming meteoritic material, not the mass of meteorites people recover from the surface.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you identify a meteorite by looking at it?
Not reliably from appearance alone. NASA cautions that meteorites can be difficult to distinguish from Earth rocks, so a visual checklist cannot authenticate a suspected specimen (NASA meteorite facts).
