Meta’s latest results show a real pressure point, but not a clear collapse in its core business: second-quarter 2026 revenue rose 28% year over year to $60.8 billion while net income fell 14% to $15.85 billion. That gap, alongside sharply higher capital-spending forecasts, puts the returns on Meta’s investment in future capacity under scrutiny. The available figures do not establish how much META shares lost over a “bad year,” or prove that earnings caused a particular share-price move.
What changed in Meta’s results?
The clearest weakness is in the relationship between sales and profit. Meta’s second-quarter 2026 revenue increased 28% from a year earlier, but net income declined 14% to $15.85 billion. The Associated Press attributed the profit decline to legal expenses and severance costs. That explanation matters: a quarterly drop in net income does not, by itself, show that advertising demand or the underlying business has structurally weakened.
For the full fiscal year ended in 2025, Meta reported net income of $60.46 billion and diluted earnings per share of $23.49 in its 2025 Form 10-K. The annual result establishes that Meta remained highly profitable; it does not erase the more recent quarterly decline or explain how its shares performed over a particular year.
Why can revenue rise while profit falls?
Revenue measures sales, while net income reflects expenses as well as sales. Legal costs and severance can weigh on net income even when revenue is growing. The AP account identifies those items as factors behind Meta’s Q2 2026 profit decline, so the quarter is not sufficient evidence on its own to conclude that the company’s advertising engine has stopped growing.

Investors should also distinguish net income from operating income. Meta said it expected 2026 operating income to exceed 2025 operating income. That is management guidance about a full year, not a reported result, and it does not negate the Q2 year-over-year fall in net income.
How large is Meta’s investment commitment?
Meta’s capital spending is large relative to its reported earnings, and the company raised its 2026 forecast during the period covered by these reports. The figures below are forecasts, not realized spending:

| When stated | 2026 capital-expenditure forecast | What the figure means |

| Q4 2025 prepared remarks | $115 billion–$135 billion | Meta’s forecast at that time; it was not a final spending total. See the Q4 2025 prepared remarks. |

For comparison with a completed year, Meta’s 2025 Form 10-K reports $72.22 billion in capital expenditures including principal payments on finance leases. That accounting measure and the forward-looking ranges are not interchangeable: one is a reported historical figure with finance-lease principal included, while the others are forecasts for a later year.
Meta’s Q2 2026 statement, as quoted by the Associated Press, described AI as “accelerating our core business today, powering our next generation of products, and opening the door to entirely new enterprise opportunities.” That is CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s account of the strategic rationale, not independent proof that the investment has already earned an adequate return. The available figures do not isolate how much of the capital budget is specifically for AI or establish the return on those investments.

What do cash and debt say about the spending?
At the end of 2025, Meta reported $81.59 billion in cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities, alongside $58.74 billion in long-term debt, in its annual filing. These balance-sheet figures provide context for the company’s capacity to fund investment, but they do not determine whether the spending will generate attractive returns.
Meta reported $72.22 billion in 2025 capital expenditures including finance-lease principal; that does not by itself establish free cash flow. Assessing the investment requires comparing spending with operating cash generation and, over time, the returns produced by the infrastructure. Those comparisons cannot be made from the figures reported here.

What should investors watch next?
Meta guided to Q3 2026 revenue of $61 billion–$64 billion in its Q2 2026 results release. Guidance is a forecast, not a result; it should be checked against the quarter Meta ultimately reports. The company also said it expected 2026 operating income to exceed 2025 operating income, another target to compare with reported performance once the year is complete.
- Track whether revenue growth is accompanied by operating-income growth, rather than treating sales growth alone as proof that profitability is improving.
- Compare actual 2026 capital expenditures with the updated forecast and look for evidence that the added infrastructure is supporting durable business returns.
- Separate management’s forward guidance from reported results, and distinguish one quarter’s expenses from a sustained trend.
What risks could weaken the business beyond costs?
Meta’s 2025 Form 10-K identifies complex and evolving legal and regulatory developments—including privacy, data use, competition, youth safety, consumer protection and advertising rules—as risks that could adversely affect advertising revenue. That exposure is relevant because advertising remains central to the revenue picture presented in the company’s results. The filing identifies the risk; it does not quantify its future effect.
The core question is therefore not simply whether Meta is still growing. Its reported Q2 revenue growth and 2025 profit show meaningful operating strength, while the latest quarterly net-income decline and rising investment forecasts make cost control and returns on new capacity more consequential. Neither the supplied results nor the forecasts settle whether the current spending will pay off, and they do not establish META’s annual return, valuation or performance against peers.
