Meta says mathematicians used its Muse Spark AI model to contribute to six mathematical papers, five of which it describes as answering previously open questions. They used Muse Spark 1.1 and 1.2 in Thinking Mode through the regular meta.ai chat interface—not a custom research system. The results are best understood as human-guided, human-reviewed collaboration, not as six problems solved autonomously by an AI.
What did Meta report?
In an October 2, 2026 announcement, Meta AI Research described mathematicians working with Muse Spark over several months on papers spanning probability, differential equations, group theory, optimization, arithmetic physics and non-associative algebra. Meta says five of the six papers address previously open questions. The announcement and the papers are available through Meta AI Research’s account of the collaboration.
The researchers worked in Thinking Mode through the normal meta.ai chat interface, without a custom research scaffold. That is a notable detail about how the work was done, but it does not mean the model independently chose the research questions or validated the final proofs.
What did the mathematicians contribute?
Researchers selected and guided the problems, steered exploration, developed and revised arguments, and checked the resulting work. Meta says a second group reviewed the papers, and the papers distinguish passages drafted primarily by researchers from those drafted primarily by AI. They also credit earlier research. The model’s role differed by paper: Meta describes contributions including calculations, candidate proofs, revisions and technical drafting. In one concrete example, it says Muse Spark generated a GAP search program used in the group-theory work; mathematicians verified the counterexample and completed the argument.

Meta framed the effort as support for researchers, not paper production, saying: “Our goal here wasn’t to mass-produce papers, but to empower researchers and help them develop mathematical insights that others can understand and build on.” That is Meta AI Research’s institutional statement; the announcement does not attribute it to a named individual.
What mathematical results did the six papers address?
Probability: when Gaussian points fit an ellipsoid
Aykut Arslan’s paper asks whether independent standard Gaussian vectors can all lie on a centered ellipsoid described by a positive semidefinite matrix. It reports a sharp asymptotic threshold near n = d²/4: below that ratio, a fitting positive definite matrix exists with probability tending to one; above it, a fitting matrix does not exist with probability tending to one. The paper explicitly makes no claim when the ratio approaches the threshold itself. See the paper on Gaussian ellipsoid fitting.

This result was not exclusive to Meta’s collaborators. Meta identifies three independent papers posted in August 2026: Misiakiewicz and Wen independently proved the Gaussian threshold; De la Cerda, Potechin, Tulsiani and Xu established it up to a vanishing multiplicative factor; and Koehler and Sohn proved a broader universality result that includes the Gaussian case. Meta says the groups developed their work independently using different approaches. The papers are linked at Misiakiewicz and Wen, De la Cerda and coauthors and Koehler and Sohn.
Differential equations: ruling out infinite-time blow-up
Leonard Dinh’s theorem concerns the focusing mass-critical biharmonic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. It states that every radial solution with negative energy and initial data in H²(ℝN), for N ≥ 2, blows up in finite time in both the forward and backward directions. In other words, for the solutions covered by the theorem, blow-up cannot be deferred to infinite time. Meta describes the underlying question as open since 2015 and says simulations in 2002 had predicted the outcome; those historical characterizations are Meta’s account. Group theory: a finite semiabelian group that is not monomial
Joseph Phillip Brennan and Milana Golich provide a counterexample to M. Kida’s conjecture that every finite semiabelian group is monomial. Their example has order 384 and is listed in GAP’s SmallGroups library as SmallGroup(384, 20127). Meta says Muse Spark generated the GAP search program, while the mathematicians checked the counterexample and finished the proof. The paper is “Semiabelian Groups Need Not Be Monomial.” Meta also acknowledges that the AI agent Nilradical reported a different counterexample independently on September 16, 2026.
Optimization: a condition for a relaxation to be exact
Aykut Arslan studies a cycle-based relaxation of binary polynomial optimization. For the completed support of a single length-three alpha-cycle, the paper gives an if-and-only-if condition: the relaxation equals the multilinear polytope precisely when each of the three pairwise-only intersections has size one. This is a specific structural characterization, not a general claim that the relaxation is always exact. Read the paper on the cycle-based relaxation.

Arithmetic physics: relating a string calculation to a curve
Anindya Dey, Gabriel Herczeg, An Huang, Nicolas Jaramillo Torres and Jacob H. Swenberg connect a string two-point function with a height function on a curve. Starting from a known connection for the Tate curve, their work extends the relationship to a broader class of curves, linking number theory with p-adic string theory. In simpler cases, Meta explains, the calculation is related to how many initial base-p digits two point coordinates share. The authors’ paper is “String Two-Point Function = Height Function on a Curve.”
Non-associative algebra: a proposed solvability test fails
Andres Barei’s paper gives a three-dimensional evolution algebra that passes a proposed test for solvability but does not belong to the class that test is intended to identify. It also proposes an alternative rule based on whole subspaces rather than the original test. Meta acknowledges independent counterexamples by Hu and Wen, so the example should not be treated as an uncontested first. See Barei’s paper.

What do these results show—and what don’t they?
The papers concern narrow, technical questions in several different areas of mathematics: an asymptotic threshold, a theorem about a specific class of differential-equation solutions, counterexamples to conjectures or tests, an exactness characterization, and a cross-field identity. The claims are mathematical results reported in the authors’ papers, not independent measurements of Muse Spark’s accuracy or proof quality.
The evidence supports a meaningful claim about human-AI collaboration through an ordinary chat interface. It does not support the broader claim that Muse Spark autonomously discovered or proved all six results, that every result was first or exclusive to the Meta collaborators, or that open mathematical problems in general are now within reach.
