In its October 1, 2026 update, the company said that, based on its investigation to date, there was no indication that MetaMask wallets or customer funds had been affected. The investigation and response were continuing, so this is a status update—not a final finding.
What MetaMask has confirmed
MetaMask’s October 1 update said it was responding to an ongoing incident with external partners and security advisors. The company said it had taken the precautionary step of exiting affected validators and was continuing containment and verification. It has not publicly identified the affected infrastructure or explained how the incident began.
MetaMask also said its staking operations are non-custodial and that it does not manage withdrawal keys for clients’ stake. That describes who controls those withdrawal keys; it does not establish that every system was unaffected or resolve the incident’s full scope.
What is not yet known
The company’s public update does not say whether systems or data were accessed, what technical cause led to the incident, or how many validators were involved. BleepingComputer reported that a MetaMask spokesperson referred questions about affected systems and data access back to the public statement. There is not enough public information in the cited statements to call this a confirmed wallet breach, credential theft, or attack using a particular method.

What the validator exit means
Exiting validators is a staking-operation response, distinct from a statement about whether wallet balances or customer funds were affected. The company’s description of non-custodial staking means MetaMask says it does not hold clients’ withdrawal keys; it does not mean validator activity has no operational consequences.
Lido, as quoted by BleepingComputer, said the relevant validators had begun exiting and were expected to be exited by October 7, 2026, but not fully withdrawn by then. Lido warned that the exit process could involve foregone rewards and possible downtime penalties. This is Lido’s reported timeline and impact, not a confirmed schedule for MetaMask’s complete recovery.

CoinDesk reported estimates from researcher Kaden that roughly 17,000 validators holding about 523,000 ETH were being exited, and that approximately 0.36 ETH in block-production payments had been diverted. MetaMask had not confirmed those figures at the time of CoinDesk’s October 1 report. CoinDesk also reported that withdrawal and re-entry could take up to approximately 45 days because of the Ethereum staking queue; that is an estimate, not a guaranteed timeline. CoinDesk quoted Lido saying stETH holders did not need to take action.
What MetaMask users should do
- Never share your Secret Recovery Phrase or private keys in response to a message, call, website, or support request. MetaMask says it will never ask for your Secret Recovery Phrase.
- Use MetaMask’s official channels for updates. Treat unsolicited messages claiming to offer incident help with caution.
- If you stake through MetaMask, distinguish your wallet from validator operations: MetaMask’s current statement addresses wallet and customer-fund impact separately from its precautionary validator exit.
Where to check for updates
MetaMask said it would share further verified information as appropriate. Its October 1 update is the company’s stated position at that time; because the investigation was ongoing, check the official MetaMask update for any later verified statement. BleepingComputer and CoinDesk provide reporting on partner statements and estimates, but those reported figures should not be treated as MetaMask-confirmed totals.
