Meta confirmed team changes on October 16, 2024, and contemporaneous reports said employees working on Instagram, WhatsApp and Reality Labs were affected. Meta did not disclose how many people were involved. The reports describe staffing and organizational changes—not a documented service disruption or specific change to Instagram or WhatsApp for users.
What Meta announced
Meta said it was changing a few teams to align resources with its long-term strategic goals and location strategy. In a statement reported by the Associated Press, the company said: “This includes moving some teams to different locations, and moving some employees to different roles.” Meta also said it worked to find other opportunities for affected employees when a position was eliminated.
That description does not mean every affected employee was transferred or offered another role. The statement refers to some teams and employees, and describes efforts to find opportunities when a position was eliminated.
Which teams were reported as affected?
The Associated Press, citing The Verge’s coverage, reported that teams associated with WhatsApp, Instagram and Reality Labs were affected. TechCrunch also reported that multiple teams were hit. Meta’s statement did not provide a complete public list of teams, so the reported scope should not be treated as an official, exhaustive breakdown.

How many Meta employees were laid off?
Meta did not disclose a headcount for these October 2024 team changes. TechCrunch likewise reported that the company did not say how many employees were affected. There is no verified figure for this round in the contemporaneous coverage, so numbers associated with Meta’s earlier or later workforce actions should not be attributed to it.
For context only, Meta’s 2024 Form 10-K reported 74,067 employees worldwide as of December 31, 2024. That is the company’s year-end workforce total, not the number affected by the October changes.

What did Meta say about the changes?
Meta described the changes as resource alignment tied to long-term strategic goals and location strategy. The company said some teams would move to different locations, some employees to different roles, and that it would work to identify other opportunities when positions were eliminated. Its statement did not quantify the changes or detail how many employees were reassigned, found other roles or left the company.
Did the changes affect Instagram or WhatsApp users?
The Associated Press and TechCrunch accounts describe workforce and organizational changes; they do not report an app outage, feature removal, availability change or other direct user-facing effect caused by this round. That does not establish whether internal work or future product plans were affected—it means the cited coverage does not document a specific change users experienced as a result.

How this differs from Meta’s broader workforce figures
The October announcement concerned a few teams, not a quantified company-wide layoff. It should be kept separate from Meta’s other workforce actions. The company’s 2024 Form 10-K discusses organizational changes in general, including changes made to pursue efficiency and realign strategic priorities, but it does not connect a company-wide workforce figure to this particular event.
The filing also describes general U.S. severance support, including severance payments, accrued paid time off, restricted-stock vesting through the final day on payroll, certain continuing health coverage, external career services and immigration support. Those disclosures provide broad policy context; they do not establish that every listed form of support applied to every employee affected by the October team changes.
