Neither service has one privacy setting that answers every concern. Meta says chats with Meta AI may be used to train its models, while ChatGPT personal-account users can turn off model improvement for new conversations. But training controls are separate from chat history and deletion: a ChatGPT chat can remain in history even when model improvement is off, and temporary chats may still be retained for safety. The right comparison depends on which service and account you use, what you share, and whether you want to limit training, saved history, or retention.

Training use is not the same as saved chat history
Meta AI chats and private messages
Meta’s April 2026 filing says content from conversations with Meta AI—including text and photos—contributes to training its models. That statement is about interactions with Meta’s AI, not a blanket claim that Meta trains on private messages between people. Meta says private messages with friends and family are not used for AI training unless a participant chooses to share them with Meta AI. Read Meta’s filing.
Meta’s privacy explainer, updated November 21, 2025, also says information shared with its generative AI features may be used to improve products and for other purposes. It notes that an AI may use information within a chat to personalize responses, and that some questions may be shared with trusted partners such as search providers. That disclosure does not establish that every query is shared. Meta’s privacy explainer.
ChatGPT personal and managed accounts
For personal ChatGPT accounts, whether new conversations are used to improve models depends on the account’s data-control setting. When “Improve the model for everyone” is off, OpenAI says new conversations are not used to train its models. The setting applies across signed-in devices, though available controls can vary with sign-in status, plan, and workspace settings. OpenAI Data Controls.

ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspace content is not used for training by default, according to OpenAI. Organization settings may also govern retention and access, so a managed account can have rules that differ from a personal one. OpenAI’s consumer data handling page.
How to limit ChatGPT model training
- Open ChatGPT and go to Settings.
- Open Data Controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
OpenAI’s help page says new conversations will then not be used to train its models, but may still appear in chat history. Because labels and controls can change and may differ by plan or workspace, check the current app and its Data Controls instructions.

Temporary chats and deletion: what disappears, and what may remain
ChatGPT Temporary Chat
OpenAI says Temporary Chats stay out of history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models while they are temporary. A copy may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat and follows normal account settings. OpenAI Data Controls.
Deleting a saved ChatGPT chat
Regular and archived saved chats remain in an account until deleted or removed under an applicable workspace retention policy. Deleting a chat removes it from the account view immediately; OpenAI says permanent deletion is scheduled within 30 days. The stated exceptions are content already de-identified and disassociated from the user, or content that must be retained longer for security or legal reasons. OpenAI’s retention details.

Meta AI Incognito Chat
Meta announced Incognito Chat for WhatsApp and the Meta AI app on May 13, 2026. Meta describes conversations as not saved and disappearing by default, and says messages are processed in a secure environment that even Meta cannot access. Those are Meta’s claims about the feature, not an independent audit; its announcement said the rollout would occur over the coming months, so availability may depend on the app and account. Meta’s announcement.
Meta’s older privacy explainer described using /reset-ai to delete information shared in AI chats across Messenger, Instagram, or WhatsApp. Since the page predates the 2026 Incognito Chat announcement and does not establish that the command is universal or unchanged, check the current controls in the app you use. Who may access or receive chat content?
OpenAI says a limited number of authorized personnel and service providers may access content for specified support, security, legal, or model-improvement purposes. It says service providers operate under confidentiality and security obligations, and that it does not share chat content for advertising or marketing or sell user data. These are OpenAI’s disclosures about its consumer services. OpenAI’s consumer data handling page.
Meta’s privacy explainer says some questions sent to its AI features may be shared with trusted partners such as search providers. It does not say every question is shared. For how Meta uses AI-chat content in training, its 2026 filing is the more recent source. Meta’s privacy explainer Meta’s 2026 filing.

Which is more private?
There is no single winner for every user. If your priority is controlling whether new chats train models, ChatGPT offers a documented opt-out for personal accounts; Meta’s cited sources do not establish an equivalent universal opt-out. If you use a managed ChatGPT workspace, training is off by default, but organization rules matter. If you are comparing temporary modes, ChatGPT documents a safety-retention period of up to 30 days, while Meta describes Incognito Chat as not saved and disappearing by default but does not establish universal rollout or independent verification.
For either service, avoid entering sensitive information unless you have checked the current controls and are comfortable with the service’s stated handling. A training preference, a history view, a deletion request, and backend retention are separate parts of the privacy picture.
