There is no single “private” switch that stops all three services from processing your AI conversations. ChatGPT offers a direct control to stop new personal-account conversations being used to train OpenAI models. Gemini’s Keep Activity setting controls some activity storage and improvement uses, but not processing needed to respond or protect users. Meta has described using AI interactions and separate business-shared activity to personalize recommendations, but the controls it has announced do not establish a comprehensive model-training opt-out. The distinctions below reflect public disclosures checked October 7, 2026; settings and availability can vary by account, region, platform, and rollout.
What the privacy controls do at a glance
“Training,” “history,” “personalization,” and “safety processing” are different things. A setting may affect one without erasing stored chats or stopping processing needed to deliver a service. The table summarizes the companies’ disclosures, not an independent privacy audit or a universal ranking.

Can you stop your AI chats from being used to train models?
ChatGPT: use the model-improvement control
For a signed-in personal account, open Settings → Data controls → Improve the model for everyone and switch it off. OpenAI says this stops new conversations from being used to train its models; the choice applies across devices when you are signed in. If you use ChatGPT while signed out, the choice is saved in that browser instead.

This is separate from chat history: existing saved and archived conversations remain visible. It is also separate from memory and personalization settings. OpenAI’s policy says individual-service content may be used for training unless a person opts out, while ChatGPT Team, ChatGPT Enterprise, and API inputs and outputs are not used for training by default unless the organization explicitly opts in. Do not assume a personal-account setting governs an organization’s workspace.
Gemini: Keep Activity is not a complete processing opt-out
In Gemini Apps Activity settings, you can review or delete activity, choose an auto-delete period, and switch “Keep Activity” off. Google says that, with Keep Activity off and no feedback submitted, future chats are not used to improve Google AI. But Google also says it may still process chats to answer you and protect Google, its users, and the public; human review may still be involved. These settings do not control processing of chats to create anonymized data used to improve Google services.
Google’s notice warns: “Please don’t enter confidential information that you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our services, including machine-learning technologies.” This warning is from the Gemini Apps Privacy Notice, last updated June 29, 2026.

Meta AI: the cited controls concern recommendations, not a proven training opt-out
Meta’s October 2025 announcement said interactions with AI at Meta could be used to personalize content and ads across its platforms, with the change effective December 16, 2025 in most regions. Meta pointed to Ads Preferences and other feed controls for adjusting recommendations and ads. Those controls address the uses Meta described; the announcement does not establish that they stop model training or all other processing.
How history, deletion, and retention differ
ChatGPT: Temporary Chat is separate from turning off training
Temporary Chat does not appear in history, create or update memories, or get used to improve models. OpenAI says it may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. A Temporary Chat can still use existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins if personalization is enabled, so the mode should not be confused with disabling those features.
Gemini: deleting activity does not necessarily delete reviewer-held data
Google says Gemini Apps Activity auto-delete is set to 18 months by default, with choices of 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite retention. Google also says chats reviewed by human reviewers and related data may be retained for up to three years, even after activity is deleted. Deleting Gemini activity does not delete information held by other Google services; settings such as Web & App Activity and Location History are separate.

Meta: the cited announcements do not specify a general retention period
The Meta announcements described here do not establish a general retention period or comprehensive rule for human review of Meta AI conversations. Do not infer that changing recommendation or ad preferences deletes past chats or ends service, safety, or security processing.
Meta has two distinct personalization pathways
AI interactions can inform recommendations and ads
Meta’s October 2025 announcement described using AI interactions to personalize content and ads across Meta platforms. It said this could apply across accounts in the same Accounts Center, while giving WhatsApp not joined to an Accounts Center as an example of activity not used across accounts. Meta also said it would not use conversations about religious views, sexual orientation, political views, health, racial or ethnic origin, philosophical beliefs, or trade union membership to show ads. These are Meta’s stated practices, not evidence of a universal privacy or training control.

In a June 9, 2026 announcement, Meta said it would use information businesses already share with Meta to personalize more than ads, including Feed content and AI responses. It said the setting called “Activity from other businesses” would control use of this activity for personalization and that the previous “Your activity off Meta technologies” setting would be discontinued. Meta announced a US and multi-country rollout for July 2026, with more countries to follow. The announcement concerns business-shared activity; it should not be conflated with the contents of a Meta AI conversation. Check the controls available in your own account, since the announcement does not establish availability for every user or country.

Special cases: WhatsApp, signed-out use, and connected services
WhatsApp’s reported incognito mode is not a Meta-wide setting
Associated Press reported on May 13, 2026 that Meta was rolling out an incognito mode for Meta AI in WhatsApp. AP attributed to Meta the claims that messages are handled in a secure environment Meta cannot access, are not saved by default, and disappear when the user exits. The report described text-only use and age confirmation. This is a reported WhatsApp feature, not a setting established for Meta AI on Facebook, Instagram, or the standalone app; availability and rollout for an individual user are not established here.
Gemini signed-out use and connected apps
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice applies to signed-in Gemini Apps use. Google says signed-out use is covered by its general Privacy Policy instead. Gemini may also process information from Connected Apps and other Google services; a Gemini setting does not necessarily control those services or third parties, which may have their own policies.

The scope is broader than the text typed into a prompt. Google’s signed-in Gemini notice covers prompts and speech, shared files and media, Gemini Live recordings and transcripts, feedback, instructions and generated content, Connected Apps and other Google-service information, plus device, app, browser, location, and subscription information. Google says some data is reviewed by human reviewers, including service-provider reviewers.

For Meta and OpenAI, the disclosures summarized above focus on interaction use, model improvement, and the named controls; they do not provide a like-for-like inventory that supports a precise comparison of every data category or retention practice.
Choose controls based on the outcome you want
- To stop new personal ChatGPT conversations from training models: switch off “Improve the model for everyone.” Keep history and memory controls in mind as separate settings.
- To keep a ChatGPT conversation out of visible history: use Temporary Chat, understanding that it may be retained up to 30 days for safety and can use existing personalization if enabled.
- To manage Gemini activity history and improvement use: review Keep Activity and auto-delete settings. This does not prevent processing needed to respond or protect users, nor does deletion necessarily remove reviewer-held data.
- To adjust Meta recommendations and ads: use Ads Preferences and feed controls. For business-shared activity used for personalization, look for “Activity from other businesses” if it is available in your account.
- For sensitive information: avoid entering details you would not want processed for service delivery, safety, or possible review; the exact processing limits differ by service and setting.
