Meta announced Meta AI for Quest in an experimental U.S. and Canada rollout on July 23, 2024. The assistant was designed to replace Quest’s Voice Commands, support hands-free headset controls and questions, and use Passthrough vision to answer questions about nearby objects and surroundings. That announcement does not establish that Meta AI is available to every Quest 3 owner today.
What Meta AI was announced to do on Quest 3
Meta described the assistant as a successor to the headset’s existing Voice Commands. Its announced uses included controlling the headset hands-free, asking questions, getting real-time information, and checking the weather. Meta’s examples included asking about an object or outfit visible through Passthrough, checking weather for a trip, and requesting nearby restaurant recommendations. These were examples of intended capabilities, not independent tests of accuracy or performance. Meta’s July 23, 2024 announcement outlines the rollout.
How Passthrough vision fits in
Quest 3’s full-color Passthrough shows the physical environment inside the headset, providing the mixed-reality context for Meta’s announced vision feature. Meta said users could ask questions about things seen in their surroundings. For instance, a user might point their attention toward an object and ask what it is. The announcement does not establish how reliably the feature recognizes objects, what exact visual inputs it processes, or whether every Passthrough experience supports it. Meta’s announcement describes the feature at a high level.
Availability: what the announcement confirms—and what it doesn’t
Meta said the experimental rollout would begin in the United States and Canada. Because the feature was described as experimental and rolling out, availability could be staged rather than immediate for all users. That 2024 statement is not a current country-by-country eligibility list and does not confirm that every Quest 3 owner can use Meta AI now.

No definitive 2026 regional setup answer is established by the announcement.
Turning on Meta AI or “Hey Meta”
The available announcement establishes the intended rollout and replacement of Voice Commands, but does not give a current, universal menu path, activation phrase, or setup procedure. As a result, an exact set of steps for enabling Meta AI or “Hey Meta” cannot be confirmed here. If the feature is available on your headset, use the current Voice Commands or assistant settings and on-screen prompts shown by Meta for your region and software version; do not assume an older menu path applies.

Quest 3 context
Quest 3 is a mixed-reality headset with full-color Passthrough, the hardware context relevant to asking about the physical environment. Meta’s Quest ecosystem announcement also lists Prime Video, Twitch, YouTube, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Netflix among entertainment options on the platform; those services are separate from Meta AI. In September 2024, Meta said the U.S. price of the 512GB Quest 3 had been reduced to $499.99. That is a dated price, not a current quote: storage configurations, pricing, and retailer availability can change. Meta’s September 2024 Quest ecosystem announcement gives that context.
