The announcement described a device under development—not an approved, launched, or clinically proven product.
What was OrthoChip supposed to do?
OrthoChip was described as a miniature, battery-less, wireless pressure sensor intended for implantation. It would measure pressure within spinal discs and send readings wirelessly to an external read-out unit. The intended purpose was to provide an objective measurement that could help clinicians assess mechanical low back pain.
The announcement said the sensor was meant to detect pressure differences between normal spinal segments and segments considered mechanically unstable. It presented those readings as a possible aid to assessment and treatment decisions; it did not report evidence that the device improved diagnosis, changed care, or produced better patient outcomes.
Who were the partners, and what did the agreement cover?
In their May 19, 2009 announcement, MEMSCAP and OrthoMEMS described a multi-year strategic development and manufacturing agreement. MEMSCAP was identified as the MEMS supplier and manufacturer; OrthoMEMS as the medical-device company developing proprietary MEMS and wireless technology for spine and orthopedic applications. The announcement said financial terms were not disclosed.

The companies also said development was focused on integrating sensors with motion-preservation, spinal-fusion, and other orthopedic devices. Those were stated development directions, not confirmation that integrations or commercial products followed. OrthoMEMS chairman and CEO Douglas Lee described the partnership as adding value “from the design-in phase to the market launch” of the product. That was a forward-looking statement, not evidence that a launch occurred.
Why measure pressure inside a spinal disc?
The proposal was to supplement clinical assessment with a direct pressure reading. In concept, comparing readings from normal and mechanically unstable spinal segments could help characterize mechanical conditions associated with low back pain. The 2009 announcement contrasted this intended measurement with relying on patient data and imaging alone, but supplied no comparative clinical results showing that OrthoChip was more accurate or useful than existing diagnostic approaches.

Related feasibility work appeared in a 2009 PubMed-indexed abstract: researchers modified commercially available piezoresistive pressure-sensor elements and tested them for measuring intervertebral-disc pressure. That work provides context for investigating disc-pressure sensing; the abstract does not identify those elements as OrthoChip or establish that the device was used clinically or commercialized. What did the 2009 announcement say about back pain?
To explain the problem the proposed sensor addressed, the companies’ May 19, 2009 announcement cited two historical figures: 26 million people per year in the United States sought physician relief for back pain severe enough to warrant care, and $90 billion was spent on back pain in 1998, described as 1% of U.S. gross domestic product. These are figures reported by the companies in 2009; their original statistical sources are not established here. They should not be read as current prevalence or spending estimates.

Did OrthoChip reach the market?
The available sources establish the 2009 development and manufacturing agreement and describe OrthoChip as under development. They do not establish whether it later reached the market, obtained regulatory clearance or approval, generated sales, changed ownership, or whether the partnership continued. The related pressure-sensor research abstract does not answer those questions. The primary announcement is available as a May 19, 2009 MEMSCAP and OrthoMEMS release.
